Amtrak’s westbound California Zephyr train 5 runs along the Great Salt Lake roughly 25 miles west of Salt Lake City at sunrise, having departed SLC 7 hours & 19 minutes late on April 8, 2024. The train was delayed in eastern Colorado due to high winds along the Colorado Front Range.

Why does it have another engine on it did the PTC and the extra power fail
It's not just that it's the fact that when any steam locomotive hits the mainline they always need a diesel locomotive. Same thing with CP 2816, it has full PTC but still has a diesel behind it. It's a mandatory requirement for any Class 1 railroad when a steam engine runs on the mainline. The diesel serves as the backup engine and helps reduce water and brake shoe usage and supplies dynamic braking.

I've been on that train but never knew what the surroundings looked like "from the outside" when looking out the window from the inside! Maybe it's a good thing I didn't know! It's a beautiful scene, but the reality of the position of the tracks at that point is a little jarring!
