Stan used to play for Aspendale whjile I was living at Edithvale. by the time I encountered him, he was playing 1sts I think. He was/is a wonderful gracious bloke. One night we had the great Barassi come to gee us up...he was awesome too. Interestingly, I never associated "Italian" with Barassi's name or person, but he was just...'Barassi' and we all loved him. Footy is one of those 'ideas greater than our individual lives' that can bind us all together irrespective of race. A Yale experiment showed that a group of ordinary white kids could be divided up into two groups, at a camp named "Robbers Cave" (USA) They quickly developed a sense of group identity (analoguous to 'our team') and were very competitive and annoying to the other group. The whole thing was an experiment to see if you could first 'divide' people into competing and contentious groups, and then, bring them back together again. This was conducted with a view to producing racial harmony in America... to find a social 'formula'. Read the link to see what things they tried, but NOTHING worked to draw them back into combined harmony... exCEPT the one thing which was bigger than both of them. i.e... they were told that a group of 'outsiders' were coming to cut off the water supply to the camp. THIS represented a common enemy and they finally worked together to defend their turf. The irony of this experiment was that it was conducted by a (nominally at least) Muslim, Muzafer Sherif. If one is pedantic, the ideas that drive Sherif, are horrific, and if one looks closely at the founder of Sherif's faith, their prophet, it is easy to see why we might have grave concerns about anyone who claimed he was a good example to follow. It's like saying 'Hitler was a great public speaker, he moved the masses, he motivated a nation" and leaving it at that. But we all know now how it panned out with him leading the German Nation. No one these days would declare they followed the "awesome example of Adolph", at least no one wishing to ever be accepted into our society again. So, in conclusion, and by way of pure reason, I am adamant that it's not enough to know how a person behaves, but also what drives that behavior. The ideas which animate him or her are crucial to understand. There are many impressive people who hold bizarre and horrible ideas deep down, which they hide until they feel they can reveal such things in public without attracting relentless scorn or eternal stigma. PSYCHOLOGICAL MODEL. It is also imperative that we develop and hold a sound psychological model for human behavior, which can explain 'why' people do things. If we simply use the model proposed by Francis Crick (DNA discoverer) then our 'mind' is nothing more than neurons, some of which hold memories, which are then compared to our current situation and we can determine "Beneficial" or..otherwise for a planned course of action. PROXIMATE and ULTIMATE. According to Prof Bloom at Yale, (Psych 110) 'organisms' are driven by the need to reproduce their genes. He makes the point that most people don't think "I'm hungry, I must eat to enable me to spread my genes"..no.. "I'm hungry, give me food"...(Proximate) but ultimately, when you peel back the layers, you get the 'ultimate' goal of gene reproduction. FAITH/RELIGION/BELIEF. At this point, I think it's wise to consider the inadequacies of the 'gene' model. If we do accept this, then we have completely lost all idea of 'right/wrong' and 'good/evil'. and are left with the rather sad idea of "Legal/Illegal... Beneficial/non Beneficial". When a man rapes a hapless female passer by late at night, this is not 'evil' it's just 'stimulus/response' by the man. (By this theory) However, if, after raping her, he then murders her, this is at odds with the 'gene' theory, and a different explanation is needed. Most of us would call this 'evil'.....and I think it's a fair analysis. "Evil" is a theological concept, and, for example is expressed in the New Testament like this: 22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 1 Tim 2 COMMENT This verse clearly identifies desires of youth as "evil" (sexual lust outside of marriage etc) Or 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3) Well...food for thought. www.simplypsychology.org/robbers-cave.html
