Should everything be up for debate?
At Doha Debates, we believe that debate can help solve some of the world's most challenging problems. But are there limits to what free speech and debate can accomplish?
Social media has allowed more people to connect and share their perspectives than ever before. That has led to an immense amount of learning and progress-but it's also led to an uptick in hate speech and misinformation, online and IRL. Today, anyone can have a platform-but should they? Is everything up for debate, or should some things be out of bounds?
Jacob Mchangama, founder and executive director of The Future of Free Speech think tank, argues that free speech and open debate are the only ways to build and secure open and tolerant societies. He thinks we should all be able to speak our minds, and says that engaging with people and perspectives we disagree with can help sharpen our own opinions or help us learn something new. Author and journalist David Stubbs says that unlimited free speech tends to favor extreme voices and that certain ideas, like climate denial, don’t deserve a platform and are “just plain wrong.” Watch Doha Debates Podcast as these experts discuss the limits of debate and the future of free speech.

Going Green: Can the global south develop without fossil fuel?
zhlédnutí 2,6KPřed 21 dnem
Climate anxieties-and global temperatures-are on the rise. According to the United Nations, if the planet warms by 1.5 degrees Celsius, we’ll be facing irreversible climate damage. To stop that increase, we need to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Reaching such an ambitious goal means changing a lot of our behaviors, including cutting back on our use of fossil fuels. But should everyone, and e...

Is obesity a choice?

Globally, 650 million people meet the threshold for obesity. With those numbers on the rise, we ask: Is obesity a matter of individual choice, or is it rooted in larger systemic problems? Greg Doucette, a bodybuilder and health coach, says that obesity is a choice, and argues that everyone can lose weight if they follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen. You know why, its not about the refugees, its the political ends they achieve. Think of who this benefits, the ruling class, a divided nation cannot unite appropriately against political overreach and abuse. This is intentional. Undermining national and political cohesion and identity.

most dangerous technology yet. if it falls in the wrong hand it you could theoretically create a pathogen to target specific groups of people (e.g. black people) which would lead to decrease in gene pool and eventually due to reduced gene pool, some disease will wipe us out due to the lack of genetic variation. CRISPR must be destroyed to avoid this risk, and exactly like she said, only rich people will be able to afford genetic enhancements thus rich get richer and poor get poorer increasing the wealth gap and chain effect in development of countries and lots of other problems. the pros of this being the fact that CRISPR can remove any heredity diseases or any form of disease. HOWEVER, not only will this lead to overpopulation due to a larger aging population (as less people are dying), but will also lead to eventual extinction over the span of a crazy number of years. random genetic mutations and diseases are meant to be. Us as a species and population cannot sustain as 'perfect' individuals. humans are meant to experience heredity diseases, pandemics, cancer. As bad is this sounds, this MUST happen in order for the existence of humans in the future. there must be a balance and messing with the balance can lead to devastating knock on effects.

There is only one group of refugees that is always having a problem... When they are accepted they still want to have their own law and force the host country become the same country they have left before...is it a foolish thing to do? When a refugee violate the law of the land or want to have the same system as the one they left that must be a automatic nullification of citizenship because they abuse the benevolence of the host country. This must be criminalize so no refugee will impose their old system to the host country.

There are 57 Muslim nations in the world out of which 8 are well off viz. United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Malaysia. These can easily accept the Muslim refugees but then these refugees prefer to go to Europe, US or Canada and not to these more well of Muslim nations. Go figure!

Host was extremely biased, did not interact with he guest speakers fairly. I appreciated the refugee girls's story and while on the face of it they were trying to humanise the refugee experience - it seemed like a ploy to tug at the heart strings. the refugee crisis can't just be dealt with on emotion and nor is it about a single person's experience. It needs to be dealt with rationally and pragmatically. A country like Afghanistan for example has 30 million people, they can't all just migrate to west, it is just not realistic and Douglas is right that we absolutely need some sort of criteria to determine who we can move into the other countries. In his book he said that we underestimate the number of people who want to come here and overestimate our ability to integrate them. In addition, refugees have rights, but don't the current citizens also have needs and expectations and rights that need to be met? You can't just label everyone who wants controlled immigration is some sort of racist, cold bigot.

How? The man is just stupid. The US was built on the bones of 25 million Native Americans and the backs of 10 million slaves. Give any of those countries 10 million people to work for free, they will have the best economy in 5 years. GB has exhausted the resources of the entire world. India alone had 1/4 of the world's GDP before colonization. Douglas Murray would lose a debate if he debated with himself. Read his book "The War in the West" it's really funny. The ability of his readers to discuss the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Serbia, Syria, formerly Vietnam, the bombing of Cambodia, etc., support for those wars, and yet not be able to understand why these people leave those countries is amazing.

I think it's quite simple really; because Muslims are hostile toward the western world in almost every conceivable way due to the western world being founded upon Christianity, that is Satan in their eyes, then they simply should not be allowed to migrate to western countries, period! Now if eastern countries want to take them that's up to them, but history has shown that even India couldn’t tolerate them and "sent them packing" to Pakistan! China doesn't tolerate Muslims either...gee I wonder why? If it's really about fleeing war and famine then fix your home countries so they don't end up in that state! If you must flee, then flee to Muslim countries first! There’s plenty of room in Saudi Arabia, N. Africa, Egypt, etc! No it’s obvious why they migrate to western countries it’s because we have civilization and they want the benefit of western culture at the same time they want to destroy it! They think they’re so clever bringing their arguments and demands so I say they can take their self righteousness and carve out more of their own settlements in the desert! It all kind of makes you wonder how they ended up in the desert in the first place a few millennia ago!
