The revered Vishnu Sahasranama was revealed by Bhishma to the Pandavas, specifically in response to Yudhisthira's request. This stotra, composed of the most illustrious names of Lord Vishnu, was originally sung by great men and sages.
Yāni nāmāni gauṇāni vikhyātāni mahātmanaḥ| ṛṣibhiḥ parigītāni tāni vakṣyāmi bhūtayē||
(I am giving for the benefit of all, those names of His which are far-famed, which are indicative of His attributes, and which find a place in the exalted hymns of the ṛiṣhis.)
As we know, the Sahasranama is a collection of 1000 names. These names, which are actually attributes of Lord Vishnu, were glorified by many unknown sages. Bhishmacharya attests to this in his proclamation: “Yaani Naamaani Gounaani Vikhyaathaani Mahaathmanaha, Rishibhih parigeethaani….”
Sri Bhishmacharya is credited with authoring the Vishnu Sahasranama in its most commonly chanted format today. He selected 1000 names from the countless names of Lord Vishnu and sequenced them uniquely. This conversation was documented by Sage Vyasa in the Mahabharata.
