Shareholder here. The market was exited due to cost, new Japanese labor and production laws and the cost of modernization of the lens production facilities. Long story short, Nikon had to consolidate and move a lot of their lens production facilities to the Philippines in order to survive. They had to cut non profitable product lines due to limited resources during this reorganization. Nikon moved what survived of riffle scope technology into medical and golfing technology. The facilities that used to produce riffle scopes was repurposed to build the new mirrorless cameras you find in the market today. Canon was the rival to Nikon, until Sony entered the market with disruptive technologies and actual contenders to both Nikon and Cannon. As of today, Nikon and Canon are fighting for survival, Nikon more so. No need for conspiracy theories. It’s all about bottom line and rapid changes in technology. Simply put, Nikon doesn’t want to be the next Kodak.

@@Kavika-xh1qj Nikon's Prostaff series rifle scopes have been made in the Philippines for decades. Rifle scope technology has been pretty much static for decades. There was zero competition from Canon or Sony in the rifle scope market. And the last year of scope production, it was the most profitable segment of Nikon's entire product line. Continuing to crank out decent quality scopes in the Philippines would have been, basically, a license to print money. If Nikon is worried about going under, that was a terrible business decision. If I was a shareholder, I'd be pretty perturbed.

I don’t want to be guilty of ignorantly and perniciously misleading my viewers. So perhaps you, as a shareholder (gasp!), can explain a few more things to them: 1. If this was just a “consolidation” or “reorganization”, why did Nikon nuke its corporate website to completely purge terms like “shooting sports” and “rifle scope”? 2. Why is there absolutely no mention of shooting optics anywhere on the extensive company history page on Nikon’s corporate website? 3. Why did Nikon stop honoring the limited lifetime warranty they sold to thousands of customers who bought their rifle scopes? Why isn’t there even a, “Sorry, folks!” on their warranty page? I’ve been contacted by numerous people asking me about this in the years since I posted this video. 4. How difficult would it be for Nikon to produce a few camouflage laser range finders for hunters, on the same Philippine assembly line they make the non-threatening, pastel-colored, ones for golfers? I know I’m barely able to comprehend the complex machinations of the business world but It seems a very strange move for a company, “fighting for survival”, to intentionally and callously alienate a huge and very loyal swathe of their customer base. Fun fact, they've used enfields for over 4 and a half decades after the war. The sniper rifles, which were made from the most accurate number 4s [MK I T and MK I *T] were used extensively for sniping roles. And when the time came to phase in 7.62 nato to replace .303 british they replaced the barrels and chamber and reworked the magazines for the caliber conversions. These rifles were the L42A1. Similar designations were given to converted enfield sniper rifles of other designations. These rifles were in service until the early 90s. So yeah these rifles have had an EXTENSIVE service history.

My dad has a S&W 12 gauge shotgun. I just realized it was a S&W an was surprised they made them. Same with that bolt action lol
