The family use to visit raby mere on many occasions , you had a choice of hiring a rowing boat , or motor boat, my brother and i always played on the Victorian slot machines , one was a electric shock machine all good fun , and buy some sweets etc at the shop . All gone. The mere is in private hands and stocked with fish only ÂŁ450 per year to join the once quiet road now resembles a racing circuit. The stepping stones no longer exist . The quaint shop has been bulldozed It indeed a terrible place now Horrible

âThe less you eat, drink and read books; the less you go to the theatre, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorize, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save-the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor dust will devour-your capital. The less you are, the more you have; the less you express your own life, the greater is your alienated life-the greater is the store of your estranged being.â
there were just no jobs to be had, they did what they could for their family and their own sanity. and now we have full employment, the government are pulling this card on us again, acting like itâs our fault theyâre bankrupt, our fault that theyâve strapped public services so much theyâre basically unusable. where are our taxes going? i canât see it ! i donât even see any âbenefit scroungersâ to point the blame at anymore, most people on income support are full time workers anyway. who else do they want us to blame ? the poor, the disabled, immigrants ??? all i see are toffs who think weâre subhuman. theyâre the ones doing dodgy deals under the table during covid for their friends, embezzling, money laundering, expenses, money just lost--pissed up the wall. inflation is out of control, being able to have jobs u have to be in a city and rent is impossible, wages havenât increased to match inflation, public services are falling apart. i fear itâll be the same way soon with the drugs and a disillusioned youth- and they wonder why gangs are so big. easy, big money if u keep ur head down & work ur way up.
Oh my. The 58 bus to Clatterbridge Hospital where I worked, leaving Spital Crossroads, near where I lived. Three Stags pub in the background where I used to drink Guinness and Tetley mild. And itâs on cine stock! A big well done to the super 8 or standard 8 fan. A moving memory, never expected to see anything more than the odd still. It must be the same for all of us, wherever we lived. Good stuff. The Corporation 50 and 58 services used to be very good, until suddenly it was the MPTE, it was now the 10 service, and âeverything had changed.â When I was a kid I once jumped off the back of a moving 58, and fell over because I didnât know how to do it. On the return journey it was the same conductor who told me how to safely jump off a moving vehicle. He must have been ex forces. Imagine that today, though.
Really appreciate this, thanks!

Amazing history. Thank you
great vid from an ole BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL KID many thanx
I'm 64, and remember the poverty. At school no-one mentioned the poverty. Here, however, the guy in the video thinks he can drink and do as he wants. Shocking!
What a really superb document! Not from the Wirral myself but Surrey born my interest being my national service basic training in July 1951 at RAF West Kirby, that shock period in all our lives to rid ourselves of some of the sillier sides of âteen age lives. This document is rich in social observation and a worthy credit to all involved and not least of all but especially so of the narrator whose vocal comment is perfection itself! The social scenes of young people and very young people too on horseback are quite wonderful as a reflection on social and educational levels of the times and I am not ashamed to confess they make me feel quite envious of their good fortune to have had such good parents and schools. A commendable high point in social graces is the thoughtful and charming hand waves some of them give to the cameraman and onlookers. How they really do give themselves great honour winning over our hearts by their unaffected salutations! As to the film itself it is a pity the finer points of clarity are lacking but the great thing is that the film was made! Oh that some such enterprising and socially thoughtful souls had done likewise in my schoolboy area down south, but nothing like this one alas⊠Thank you so very much for letting us see them so much really to our heartsâ content!
I'm from Wirral myself and I just love seeing all these old scenes. It's still a lovely place and lovely that you remember it fondly despite doing your National Service! Such a different time. Your comment was welcome and like you, yes I envied the children with the ponies and the private education. Not meant to be my lot, born into a working class family which once you were in, you never really were allowed to forget. Still I did OK!
Though they probably did not realise it at the time, politicians did all they could to trash communities by moving people into tower blocks and shutting down local associations to 'improve' living conditions and save public money. In the end, changes by politicians caused disaffection, increased crime and broke up long established natural support groups. Some areas such as Birkenhead have never recovered.
Some of those lovely Wirral places like Hoylake are becoming occupied by illegal economic migrants at local people's expense!
Knew a girl I loved from Wirral. She was a pretty blonde how I loved her. Never took a look at where she came from before. Milk in a propane tanker. Dock tracks in waters. Bet she loved that train.
Quite a contrast to see crowds throwing an egg at King Charles, as I saw today. These crowds seem to adore Their King.
I went back recently. It looks much better now.
The noctorum has changed so much for the worst, I lived there till I was 19.

@5:48 It's quite clear that civilisation has regressed. Spot the fat person on the beach? The elephant footage just before shows how innocent we were, no claim society! I would have been around 7yrs old at that time and I really do wish we could turn the clock back. The world is not a nice place anymore (by design)

Thank you for making the video. I was one of the crew on board theWinston Churchill which has now sadly been sold on. We won the Cutty Sark Trophy for promoting international friendship. It served as a stepping stone for a lifetime of international opportunity for someone who benefitted hugely from a leg up in terms of confidence and motivation. The training ships are a great way of learning more resilience and making lifelong friends.
Lived on the Wirral from 1956 to 1983 - born in Wallasey and lived in Bromborough, Bebington and Claughton. Great times.
Happy days from my childhood. So much less traffic! Lived on the Wirral for 30 years.
