OSU Natural Resources Extension
Registrace 20. 03. 2020
We will share educational videos about managing Oklahoma lands for livestock, wildlife, forest products and water resources. Together we can continue to improve natural resources in the great state of Oklahoma.
Natural Resources are plants, animals and materials (like water, air and wood) that occur in nature. Humans do not create natural resources but we do need to manage them responsibly to avoid depleting them. Faculty within the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Oklahoma State University conduct research, teach students and inform the public through extension. Their focus is the sustainable use of four main resources: fish, forests, rangelands, and wildlife.

OSU Researchers are Studying Oaks, Fire and Eastern Redcedar
How do different eastern redcedar management techniques affect flame height, rate of spread and oak damage in Cross Timbers forest?
Eastern redcedar encroachment changes fuel conditions and may affect fire behavior.
Historically, fire limited eastern redcedar spread in these forests.
Wildfires occurred every 4-6 years, killing cedars while still small.
Oklahoma oaks, like post and blackjack, are adapted to fire in the understory.
Today, frequent prescribed fire encourages oak regeneration and limits eastern redcedar establishment.

Virtual Fence on the Cow Cam!
zhlédnutí 613Před rokem
Cow Cam & Virtual Fence Collars Our GoPro captured cattle responses to virtual fence. Check out the Cow Cam view! You can see the GPS-based virtual fence boundary. The heifer enters the sound zone, then she enters the electrical pressure zone. The herd turns around, away from the boundary. A map shows the sound zone and the electrical pressure zone. GPS locations show her movement into and back...
OSU Students Burning Cattle Pasture For Forage!
zhlédnutí 45Před rokem
Check out this video from a burn back in March. Learnin' & Burnin' Our OSU students are patch burning at the Stillwater Range Research Station! Here we burn 1/6th of the pasture in March and 1/6th in August every year. This provides high-quality forage for the longest period and reduces cattle supplement needs. Cattle remain in the pasture during the burn. They quickly explore the burned area k...

Helicopter Pronghorn Captures In Oklahoma!
zhlédnutí 266Před rokem
Pronghorn Research in Oklahoma. Thanks to private landowners allowing access, our researchers capture pronghorn in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Captures are made using a net gun. Pronghorn are removed from the net, blindfolded, and hobbled for their safety. We collect blood samples to assess health and disease and fit GPS collars to track movements habitat use, & survival After only a few minutes, p...
Low-Stress Goat Handling with A Bud Box!
zhlédnutí 863Před 2 lety
From a holding pen, goats are moved towards a modified Bud Box. A Bud Box system contains a “dead-end” box located past the alley. Once animals enter the box, they naturally want to turn back to where they came from. They move into the alley with minimal pressure. To optimize flow, only the number of animals that will fit into the alley are brought into the Bud Box. The Bud Box provides a low-s...
Feeding Supplement in Multi-Species Pasture. CATTLE + GOATS!
zhlédnutí 80Před 2 lety
How do we feed winter supplements when grazing goats & cattle together? For safety reasons, goats are fed in a separate pen from cattle. Feed bunks are filled before animals are let into the pens, where they sort themselves. The goats learned this quickly, being fed in the smaller pen from the day they arrived. Supplement is the same for both groups. Content and Editing Cooper Sherrill, Allison...
Goat Pro 3.0
zhlédnutí 60Před 2 lety
Our goats were stripping bark off of sumac last winter Goats eat more woody plants in the winter because grasses die back to the ground. Although the nutrient content of sumac bark is unknown, it may be similar to other bark which is high in calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The stripped sumac will likely resprout providing future goat feed and wildlife cover. Checkout @Ok...
Chaining Eastern Redcedar Skeletons In the Kansas Prairie
zhlédnutí 133Před 2 lety
No trees, no seeds. The Anderson Creek wildfire in 2016 killed most of these cedar trees. Now, rancher Russell Blew is using chaining to knock down the skeletons. Chaining uproots any remaining live cedars and allows prescribed fire to quickly consume the downed skeletons. Cedars within draws are a seed source for invasion into upland areas. Chaining is done with two bulldozers each pulling one...

Burning at the OSU Botanic Gardens
zhlédnutí 28Před 2 lety
In August, this site was prescribe burned by OSU Natural Resources Extension Specialists & volunteers. Specific weather conditions were chosen - humidity range 25-70% - wind direction S or SE - wind speeds 4-20 mph This made the fire safe and effective We restored this site to native prairie plants and burn it periodically to maintain them. Burning promotes our native grasses & flowering broadl...

Curious what our goats are up to now? In the first Goat Pro, you saw plants that our doe was eating in May. This time, in August, she is grazing the regrowth from a patch that was burned 2 weeks earlier. She eats resprouting grass, blackberry, and sericea lespedeza. Also resprouting sumac, more sericea, and more sericea, and more sericea. In the unburned areas, she eats dogwood, and even more s...

Burn, and I can’t stress this enough, baby, burn. 🔥🔥🔥
You score the animal opposite to the information on the card. That may be a mistake because that is not a 4, with 5 being the lowest and 1 being the highest.
