Q&A: The Vitality of Patient Navigation with the American Cancer Society
Equitable care for cancer patients requires multi-stakeholder groups to form partnerships that can support patient navigation efforts. The American Cancer Society accomplishes this through partnerships with business and community organizations interested in furthering the reach, and depth, of holistic cancer care.
In this interview, two experts weigh in on how community and business partnerships can improve patient navigation efforts: boosting equity and accessibility in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care.

Prevention can and should be on everyone’s agenda. Having cancer and if for even a fleeting moment feeling that you could have caught it sooner is a feeling I can assure you no one should ever have to live with.

I'm a cancer survivor. In October of 2019 I was diagnosed with stage three squamous cell carcinoma. In November 2019 I had a total laryngectomy. I've been cancer free since my surgery. Praise God! No chemo,no Radiation, no cancer drugs! Thank God for His Grace and Mercy!!!

I am one of those cancer deaths prevented. When I went in for my colonoscopy last year, two precancerous polyps were found and removed. My grandmother was 53, and she had to have surgery and a colonoscopy bag she had to wear. I am so grateful for the work the American Cancer Society does it overwhelms me.

The coding in Maryland and the reality of Medicare and risks and investment pools and access… it’s not the same as Florida, nor PA…. Yet… rivers flow, disease spread, smoke emanates. Economics and supply chains which is kind of difffeent than “means of production”… rights of indivuals and groups…. National amd international. Breathe ya’ll…

Before I was born… I had an aunt, my dad’s sister… she had hotchkinson disease and was being treated. Even back in the early 70’s… treatable but far different views of meds available. And, views of treatments and access to your own medical data and gender and all sorts of things. Well, my grandmother and others (I wasn’t there), didn’t really keep Day that informed…. I’m not sure of the details. She also was married and got pregnant… the doctors didn’t communicate either… When one doc or she found out about the other work… the cancer meds stopped abruptly… the a baby was born… he had been effected…. My amazing cousin (whom I did his eulogy when he passed in his 20’s)… and my aunt passed away before I was alive. I’m not a medical historian…. There are so many wonderful people involved in stuff like this and defining them is a precarious kind of thing. But, meds are better now… how did that happen? There’s still much work to do…. How do we view a person’s body and mind and issues of control? Lanes and beyond. It’s a lot to take in. I also, try to be very careful about what I share and don’t. Access to information and missions and agendas radiate rapidly. Breathe ye’ll…

What is cancer and how does it relate to other disciplines? Translations over time and space… why would I want to foster a permeable and caring… yet “thick” skin… with those whom I am charged with and am also grateful for serving and leading and providing for? This reality has also cost me in some ways and also… my gainful employment needs and beyond. But, leadership and helping amidst complex and tough situations are very real and very connnecyed issues.

I’ve been pooping blood for about a year now. not just like a little either if you’ve ever had a nose bleed that wouldn’t just stop it’s like that this morning I almost pooped myself after waking up and standing, rushed to the toilet blood / diarrhea hard to explain the uncomfort but definitely wasn’t comfortable coming out more of an abdominal pain I had a colonoscopy like 7 months ago haven’t been back to the doctor since but as far as that went he couldn’t see anything but a couple polyps I’m having trouble finding out what’s wrong with me and am now out of insurance :( I’m 21 any ideas or someone with relatable symptoms other symptoms I have would be mucus with my poo the pooping blood has been going on for a full month straight this time every time I poo doesn’t hurt wouldn’t even know it was happening If it wasn’t excessive enough to make me dizzy bowel habits all over the place sometimes I won’t poo for a day
