They have billions but that is not enough. If they can they want trillions. So, they bribe their way (or use ‘cables’) to get richer. 0:16

    The premise of Meridith's second question is totally outdated. The military and USDP don't penetrate into society the way they used to - not at all. Before the coup, the word "Dalan", which now means regime informant, was used in rural areas for military families. The same few families send their sons into the military, generation after generation. There is a huge gulf between them and the rest of the population; other Myanmar people hate them, and they hate other Myanmar people. In Sagaing especially, they are typically concentrated in certain "Dalan villages" where there are many military and veteran families, while in whole other townships there are few people with any connection to the military. The situation is perhaps even more extreme in urban areas. This past year only 14 people joined the military from all of Mandalay.

  • @michaelsladnick5482
    @michaelsladnick5482 Před 2 lety

    The main thing missing from this talk is a discussion of the attitudes of regular people and grassroots activists. Nobody outside of Myanmar is talking about this. I taught myself Burmese since the coup, and am in close contact every day with many people in Sagaing and other rural areas at the center of the revolution. Basically the progressive side of the 'Culture War' in the West has triumphed in Myanmar, especially among Gen Z, but without any "war". Without really knowing much about American history or contemporary politics, Myanmar people look to the struggle for social justice in America and think this is what they must emulate. Thus, there is a popular perception that it was the decades of persecution of the ethnic minorities, and the failure of the majority to stand up to this, that is to blame for the country's current predicament. I have had villagers from very poor areas, who have lost everything, destitute, even sleeping on the open forest floor, tell me with complete conviction that even if they starve, even if everything they work for is burned down by the regime, it will all be worth it, because now the people's eyes are open to racism. In the "heartland" of Upper Burma, where there are few ethnic or religious minorities, the enthusiasm for the rights of the oppressed is especially focused on women and LGBT. In the daily anti-coup marches that continue in many villages, women and girls are always at the front and men at the back, and women are the main ones making speeches. Tens of thousands of young women from the villages continue to take up arms and join the PDF, even as their boyfriends stay at home. A disproportionate number of the grassroots leaders standing at the head of the democracy movement in rural areas are LGBT. Having previously been marginalized, they have now become people who the public looks up to. LGBT teens openly and enthusiastically participate in the revolution, and there have been regular pro-LGBT demonstrations in farming and mining communities. The (few) articulate supporters of the Tatmadaw often compare what is happening to the Chinese Cultural Revolution, alleging that young people are totally out of control and have abandoned their traditions (at least the slavish ones which the Tatmadaw cares about). For the overwhelming majority of the population who support the revolution, even if they are personally conservative, they do not take major issue with these changes as do conservatives in other countries. Amidst these this social and culture transformation, attitudes towards Aung San Suu Kyi are complex. Many of the leading grassroots activists personally don't like her, because they consider her a racist. For many common people, a passionate belief in anti-racism can coexist with continued support for Aung San Suu Kyi. This is especially true of young women in the villages. But whereas in the past (even last year) such people would get very offended by any criticism of Aung San Suu Kyi, now they are more willing to hear criticisms. I have to disagree with Professor Loh's recommendation to read Thant Myint-U for an analysis of Myanmar politics. Thant Myint-U is now one of the most hated people in the country, because he opposes the revolution. People bring up his writing now only to mock the naive elite attitudes of the pre-coup period, and the self-appointed "experts" who are completely at odds with the Myanmar public, and who are doing nothing to help now while millions of ordinary people are devoting their lives to remaking the affairs of their nation.

    The Sarawak Report has also reported on Sarawak's own equivalent of 1MDB corruption and illicit monies accumulated by Taib Mahmud of Sarawak as its Chief Minister (1981-2014) and Governor (ongoing since 2014). Wealth from timber logging (destroying the natural ecosystem and forest customary land of natives) goes to him, his political associates, and his family members based in overseas Western countries where illicit monies were laundered (turned "clean") and funnelled into real estate development. This is massive political corruption and financially criminal in Sarawak and laundering in overseas countries but hardly known in Malaysia to Malaysians.

      @mahdiismail8853 Před 2 lety

      Wayang Kulit Semenanjung Tanah Melayu BUKAN BERASAL DARI JAWA apalagi Majapahit tua. Kelantan-Pattani, Kedah Tua sendiri adalah merupakan Kerajaan era purbakala yang telah lama wujud sebelum era adanya Majapahit. Empayar Pattani-Kelantan yang berasas negara dagang maritim, jauh lebih besar dari Majapahit dan meliputi 3 negara era modern iaitu Pattani (Thailand), (Kelantan-Terengganu)Malaysia dan sebahagian dari (Selatan) Kemboja. Kedah tua pula kewujudannya dicatat oleh banyak sumber purbakala India, China dan Arab. Malah kewujudan empayar Kedah Tua disahkan sendiri oleh catatan seorang Yahudi peniaga kesumba (pewarna) yang telah berdagang di Kedah pada tahun 90 Masehi yang berasal dari Alexandaria, Mesir. Harap tiada lagi dakwaan palsu dari Indonesia yang mendakwa secara salah bahawa wayang kulit Kelantan berasal dari Jawa apalagi Majapahit. Cukup cukuplah dengan terbongkar sejarah salah tentang dakwaan keluasan kawasan kekuasaan jajahan takluk Majapahit yang kini ditertawakan pakar sejarah modern termasuk yang datang dari Indonesia modern sendiri. Moga pencerahan ini membantu anda.
