I really like the idea of Payne doing this not to be a dick to Phoenix or actually make him feel like he's a failure, but to put everything into perspective and to convince Phoenix to have more realistic expectations. No one can win all the time, but losing once doesn't mean you suddenly lose all talent or skill. Payne's seen Phoenix work in the courtroom and knows full well that he really is very good at his job, but he still enjoys to make fun of arrogance, and so he's more than willing to dish out an important lesson in the most delightfully dickish way possible.
