Adams County Mississippi, referenced by Allen Guelzo for its wealth, in the 1860 census, had a slave population over the70%. Could slavery, aka King Cotton, expand? By the 1850s, as well as cotton was doing, the crops that made up the Ag Sector of our economy, cotton was definitely Number One but wheat and corn combined were now equal to cotton production; and when it came to livestock as part of the Ag Sector it was as large as the crops sector. By the late 19th Century King Cotton would no longer be the Number One crop, and by WWI the South was becoming more mechanized in agriculture and in less need for human labor. Also, Texas was the last state to come in to the Union as a slave-holder state, and that was in 1845. Five more states would come into the Union between Texas and the start of the Civil War and none of them came in as slave-holder states even though some had slaves (like California). So where would your next slave-holder state be?...Colorado, New Mexico?, Arizona? Just because a state had slaves doesn't mean the slave-holder interests predominated. Also, looking backward from the late 19th Century not knowing what was to happen if you are in 1860 -- the Industrial Revolution taking shape in America during the whole 19th Century was transforming from labor intensive production (like cotton and the factories dependent on cotton) in the beginning of the 19th Century to capital intensive industries and mining operations like coal and steel production after the 1870s and especially after 1880.

Can we get the sound added for the entrance procession of graduates? Or is that just me?

Enjoyed program. Can always count on Dr. Carmichael!
One pic of fallen soldier has gun above his head. If he fell where we see him wouldn’t the gun be along side or on top of his body? Was this staged?

A lost art. Well done, sir.
Is it just me, or does McClelland remind anyone else of Herbert Sobel, Frank Burns, & Benedict Arnold? Maybe 80% Sobel, 10% Burns(“Frank Burns eats worms”🤡), and 10% Arnold….😱🫣🤣😆😂🤡
Peter Carmichael was the weak link. His performance was disappointing.
Uzbekistan
A good man.
not to be "that person," but are you by any chance aware of existence of actual documentation, including names and dates, regarding the claim(s) of apparitions of the Civil War hospital in Penn Hall's basement? I'm definitely not a wingnut nor do I plan to visit the college and/or trespass with ghostbusters' style electrical equipment. it's simply that i stumbled upon the story a few years ago and i cannot shake my interest in finding if there are any facts in existence about which I puzzle over. because you are a historian, I figured it was worth asking.
Scott said there was something about the word Antietam. When I was young and heard the word Antietam, I thought it was a battle that happened in Germany somewhere.
I just got in!
I am here because of Civil War Journal; Mr. Brian Pohanka’s contributions to the series were so compelling; a true lover of history, he brought us back in time. Such a loss, but so very good to know that he still continues to educate.
Wow. What a lecture.
Rest in Peace Troy, You've done great things!

I was impressed by the insight expressed by these recent graduates regarding the importance of activism in their lives. I suspect that Gettysburg College played some small part in hat development, .
My favourite president followed by JFK, Reagan
A beautiful school.
dramatic...theatrical...spell-binding!
My favorite 20th century writer: a Pisces: Ishmael Reed...born 02/22/1938 in Chattanooga TN.. A nominee for the Pulitzer Prize ... Writer of the Classic American Novel: Mumbo Jumbo.. Right on! Right on!
Dr. Guelzo is one of my favorites. How is it possible to know so much about the Civil War, battles, people, everything. He amazes me! As an amateur historian-retired nurse I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from this brilliant man, from lectures and books.
I find it fascinating that there is no(that I know of)real blockbuster movie a la Saving Private Ryan etc that has been made about this monumental war in American History except a few crappy tv movies that were made..I think it warrants a huge budget Steven Spielberg style movie ... I'm thinking it would be huge..
Be the force and the push from collective efforts that can accelerate its bend😮
It's those small actions that prove how important something or someplace to them! ❤ Great Work

Winter at Gettysburg was magic. I miss those days!
Why is CZcams recommending this gay tyrant worship?
Hello,
Carmichael is talking too much. Exiting out. Let the guest talk!
I love this guy's voice and delivery! This was great, thanks!
Ted Bundy quit smoking. They forgot to talk about that.
Well he got smoked by ol sparky anyways 🤯
Guelzo is always worth listening to. Just wish he were fairer to "radical" Republicans.
Who Did Lincoln Defend? Not a Certain Roman Catholic Priest Perhaps? And Not His Source Of Fame? (By By Comment?)
What the Victor’s History wants you to know about Abraham Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln was born on the frontier in a log cabin with a dirt floor. He learned to read by candlelight. The tall, lanky Abraham worked as a humble log splitter. He spent his days reading the bible and studying to become a lawyer by reading law books and would eventually go on to represent his district in Illinois as a congressman and finally, President. He went on to issue the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves. He is famous for his aphorisms such as, “God must have loved the common man because he made so many of them”. What the Victor’s History doesn’t want you to know about Abraham Lincoln: As a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln was the highest paid corporate attorney in America and a lobbyist for the railroad industry. (He was chief council for the New York Central Railroad; then the largest corporation in the world). His 3-point advocacy for (1) “Internal Improvements” (massive government funded works projects that would be undertaken by large Northern Industrial corporations), (2) a “high tariff” (to protect these corporations from foreign competition) and, (3) his advocacy for a “National Bank” (a bank run by politicians that could inflate the currency to fund these projects), are what propelled Lincoln from a local politician into the presidency by this cabal of northern industrial and banking interests. Not surprisingly, his cabinet included Wm. Chase (Chase Bank), and the president of U.S. Steel. The Southern States which were the main consumers of imported steel agricultural products bore the burden of these tariffs (up to 40%). Called by the South the “Tariff of Abominations”, it effectively resulted in a massive transfer of wealth from the agricultural South to the Industrial North and was a leading cause of the secession of the Southern States from the Union. As a new country constitutionally formed by “the people of the sovereign states”, the Confederacy sought to maintain ports of free trade. This would have caused a loud sucking sound as trade from foreign nations would leave high tariff northern ports for the free ports of the South to discharge their cargoes. Lincoln had said that the ONLY reason he would go to war was to “collect the imposts (tariffs)” so central to his agenda. Lincoln denied the right of secession upon which our independence in 1776 was founded referring to the peaceful constitutional right to secession as “insurrection”. The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t free a single slave since it ONLY applied to the States Lincoln didn’t control but allowed slavery to continue in the States still in the Union that he did control. (Read the actual text). Lincoln called it a “war measure” to dissuade Great Britain, which had recently abolished slavery in it’s colonies, from recognizing the slaveholding Confederacy. PS: An entire book has been written debunking the quotes attributed to Lincoln that he never said.
This was a fantastic series - well done
I want to join and be one of Lab members
