Orson Welles on Watching Too Many Films
He could be a character in game of thrones.
Antonionni was synonymous with nothing. The famous image of the body in Blow Up disintegrates as he enlarges it.
The most nothing director? Melville although there's misogyny suicide betrayal there's ultimately a sense of futility. The critics loathed his nihilism his formal formalization of his nulity Delon plays the same character Jeff either as hit man or Cop in Le Samaurai and Un Flic but it's all impersonal they are types archetypes molded by the exterior coding of the institutions of crime. No private life. The individual disappears in a Zen nothingness. His films always have that feeling of cool distance indifference. Like the blue tint of the photography in Un Flic 1973
And Orson, it is worse now than when you said it.
Quentin Tarantino : Nope
It's weird how he's both right and wrong at the same time. Like, some of the best filmmakers are cinephiles. At the same time, a person who is not as well-versed in film may have something far more interesting to say in the medium.
Even Hitchcock said he didnt care about the content but handling the material.
I've watched a ton of films and still manage to come up with semi-unique ideas for my own stuff. It all depends on what sort of thing you're trying to make, sometimes you want something akin to a Tarantino film with lots of homages and sometimes you want something very personal that only you could make. Don't limit yourself.
Thanks for clipping this! Had to show this to a couple of friends and it was always a pain to find the right timestamp
Depends very much on the school I think.
If I were in the USA though, I would definitely adopt a DIY approach. It's too expensive to study there.
LG should share his opinions with Spike Lee about film school and see what kind of response they elicit.
I don’t think Welles would like Tarantino much
In the words of Herzog: "Who wants to spend four years on something a primate could learn in a week?"
Did not know about that one 😂 very good !!! Thanks 🙏 I love the guy
Tarantino enters the room, and turns to Welles, "Orson, hold my beer."
Les rires sont insupportables mais je pense qu'il a raison.
Great atmosphere in that room.
An Indictment of Tarantino?
Fascinating but Welles did watch Stagecoach every night while making citizen kane
Don't talk shit about my god tarkovsky
“…and you want to be my latex salesman”.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Manny torres like films.. 🤔
Ok. So Stranger Things and Cobra Kai weren't great? Two of the best modern series and paid homage to what was before. I'm calling at least half BS on this statement....
Sorry but citizen kan was unwatchable
You probably take medication for being overactive in your mind
The interruptions are so annoying. Let the man speak, for crying out loud!
These so called _greatest_ contemporary movie makers are all *pooping their pants* cause in reality these film makers know And because of technology - the *average person* can *Tell And make* a *better story* just through *using a smartphone* .
Quentin Tarantino has left the chat.
Orson always makes the world seem to make sense to me.
I do wish that Star Wars writers and directors would watch more Kurosawa films, however.
Love his brutal honesty.
Crazy how he would die only 3 years after this interview
Quentin Tarantino would not agree.
Does he mean bc u copy or steal? Inspired by film and comedy is a spirit! If u have a inspired spirit u can't watch to much of anything. If ur a copy cat u don't get inspired u steal ideas. I DONT CARE WHAT OTHERS ARE IM TOO BUSY WATCHING EVERYTHING AROUND ME TO COPY SHIT!!! 😶🌫️
Fair point, but when you have Quentin Tarantino, who's the exact opposite philosophy is hard to pinpoint a "truth".
The author of "Citizen Kane" definitely knows the subject of films about nothing :-)
PAUSE. You made one movie. Sushhh.
Jack Lemmon was enchanted, too 😊
LOL if he thought it was bad at that time. He would be really annoyed in 2024 if he was still around.
I understand the temptation to make films about films. Reality has gotten so freaking stupid.
Another reason to hate Tarantino...
