A Thing About Turning A Horse

As good as consistency can be, it’s generally a better deal to operate off of what your horse is feeling from you rather than being a “push button”. It’s like learning to play an instrument by ear vs by note. By ear, you get by and just kinda fill in the blanks. Where as by note, you have the entire spectrum. We’ve all heard, “if you follow steps 1, 2, and 3 in this order exactly, it will make all your horse problems go away”. But does this work? Good Lord! How long could it possibly take to just cut the damn barbed wire??? I think the moral of the story is take five mins to prevent a wreck when you can see it coming plain as day. It also says to TRUST your gut instinct. You never felt completely safe when trotting your horse over the barbed wire. You instinctively understood that doing this could seriously injure either you or your horse, or both of you. And, you have a responsibility to your horse to avoid potentially dangerous situations. I hate to say this, but you failed in your leadership responsibilities to your horse. You should have trusted that gut instinct and taken 5 mins to cut the damn wire. If the other guys felt fine with trotting their horses over the barbed wire, Good for Them. It doesn't mean that YOU felt fine with it. This one once of prevention would have saved time, money, pain, and possibly much worse. Come On, Man! Use your head. Think!!! Take the time it it takes to head off a wreck before it happens when you can see it coming.

Wonderful, Carson! How do I apply this to a trail horse sold to me who seems to be afraid of every little thing. She spooks ALMOST in place, but back so round I can hardly fit her with a secure saddle. Ah, me!! Have been walking her in hand every day for a week as I am almost recovered from a severely fractured wrist, and must return to my job on a hamster wheel soon. Help?!

I’m not sure I would tie a horse using a rope halter. I also think you should work with the horse and not tie him for hours alone. Where’s the teaching in that? Maybe after you work with them THEN you can tie the , but not straight off. Sorry don’t agree

Thank you for this. I just read a post that said the greatest gift we can give a horse is peace and when a horse does as we ask we give him peace. When he doesn’t we take it away. I was repulsed by that. We should always be a source of peace for them, especially when they’re struggling. Yes we can be firm, set boundaries, even escalate pressure if necessary - and still be a source of peace
