This video lays out my early winter strategies for bass fishing. I'm old school and don't use all the new tech. I love to fish on instinct and I prefer to fish shallow if possible. I believe you can use these techniques on most any body of water. The first half of the video will be on the water explaining how I target bass and the back end will break down lures, rods, reels and more details. I ...

super video ! I also enjoyed the music ! I was wondering if a pair of lightweight trekking poles would have helped, especially on the down hill to absorb some impact. You really covered some ground and elevation gain/loss.

Hey thanks for checking it out and taking the time to comment! I have never used hiking poles mainly because I am carrying a tripod and camera. Otherwise yes I think poles would have been helpful. I have hike in september that will be about 60 miles off trail so I am looking at some poles for that trip. Will also be potential of snow and glacier crossing so probably going to go that route. Any recommendation?

@@SoloSchmitty Years ago when I was still young enough to tackle high mountain backpack treks I got myself a pair of LEKI trekking poles. LEKI is a German company it was started after World War II, by the Lenharts who were refugees from Czech Bohemia, they left their country in 1946 without possessions. They made a new home in Germany. At the time I bought them, early to mid 1980's they were considered the 'top of the line' in terms of quality. I put these poles through many years of some tough trips and they got beat up pretty good but they always did the job. You can still get that brand at REI but they will run you $ 150-$200, if you can afford that I would say they would be well worth it ! I also have a pair of very inexpensive trek poles I got at Walmart a few years back, like $ 15 they are Ozark brand I believe and quite frankly am surprised they have held up as well, but in truth they have not been put through the same rigor and stress as the LEKI poles. I was taking a look at your route I was wondering why you didn't start from Battle Park trailhead instead of Hunter trailhead but I am guessing you chose Hunter cause it was only a couple miles from the pavement whereas Battle Park looks like 10 miles from pavement- although Battle Park would have been closer to Solitude Lake, etc. I have done most of my high altitude trips here in the Eastern Sierra but sort of retired from it recently as I am almost 70 now with some recent lower back and shoulder injuries. But maybe I will get up to Cloud Peak Wilderness, someday, who knows ?

Cool, glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Thats great you are going to make a solo run, after my first trip there was no looking back. Really opens the door for opportunities that are much more difficult with a group. My trip was in June with fairly high water. It wasnt difficult and the portages get you around the dangerous stuff. Just make sure you know what side of the river to stay on for the portages and hug it as you get close to the rapids. I believe all the portages are on river right in that section. I was actually wanting to do a night on Poohbah/wink area but didnt have enough time. I hear the fishing there is amazing so I am going to save it for a time when I can really spend some time there. I just used a nat geo map and All trails app on my phone. You can map the whole route out at home and then download it your phone. Its a must in my opinion. its easy to get turned around and having something that can show you exactly where you are and the direction you are pointing is a huge advantage. Hope you enjoy the series and feel free to reachout with any questions. Thanks for watching!

Not sure. I had gps and was in the right spot( trees had been cut at some point). The trail just disappeared after 100 yards.

Really enjoyed your video. Done that route a few times and have been to many of those lakes. Great memories! Quick question- What were you wearing for footwear on this trip? What kind of boots are those? They look nice! I don’t recognize them and Im on the hunt for a new pair of portaging boots to wade into the water with kevlar canoe.

Appreciate ya watching! Those are Muck Foragers. They worked great, I had always wet footed in the past but having dry feet the whole trip was a game changer! My only complaint is they could be a little grippier on wet stuff but worked fine and I tested them hard that trip.

You're welcome! And thanks for the quick response. I wondered if they might have been the Muck Foragers. There's a similar boot I came across out of Japan, but can't recall the name and don't trust the quality. I have been interested in the Foragers. If you wore them the whole trip in Quetico, they definitely were put through their paces and tested hard! I don't like wet footing it either. I had LaCrosse Alphaburly Pros for many years that were great. I've got Muck Wetlands now. Both of those are/were great in May or October, but can become too warm starting in June. Also, the condensation inside when it's warmer. Have been trying to find a lighter weight boot to try. Definitely like the looks of the Foragers, though I've heard similar concerns about them being a little slick on wet rocks. I'm not worried about the lack of ankle support. I have strong ankles. I may pick up a pair to try out! Thank you so much!@@SoloSchmitty

Just found your channel, awesome job! Just subscribed. Curious, do you use a shuttle service to transport you to the start of adventure?

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub. Yes, I used Jadwin Canoe. They were great! They shuttled my car so I was able to start my trip on my schedule. Just dropped a key off and paid in the morning on my way to the river.

Had to watch your video again after last night and follow your route on my Gaia mapping app while watching. Crazy route from Spear Lake up and over the "Primrose Peak Death March" to the lake upstream from Cloud Peak Reservoir. Lots of back tracking and setting up your camera for the videos. My question is how many big boy camera batteries did you have to bring along. I've done some time lapse videos and it's a battery eater. Climbed Bighorn Peak a few years ago and boulder hopping is not for the faint of heart. Thanks again for the enjoyment of the trip.

Really glad you enjoyed it and followed along with a map. Gives you some good perspective of the route. I usually bring 2 20k anker batteries to charge everything. You are right, Timelapse’s are a battery eater but I really enjoy making them. Thanks again for watching reaching out! I really appreciate it!
