This channel mainly introduces some metal surface treatment technologies. Including brush plating to repair the pits of hydraulic cylinders/printing machine rollers, metal surface anti-corrosion technology, polishing technology, metal surface modification, and the use of metal surface sealants.
Repair process of deep pits on chrome rods - welding first and then brush plating
In this case, the pits on the chrome-plated rods are very deep, so we did not directly brush plating. In order to save time, we first filled the deep pit with argon arc welding and stainless steel electrodes, and then used an angle grinder to grind away the uneven welding areas. This video does not include welding.
After activation #2, you can actually still see the welding mark, which is the part in the middle oval area that has not turned black.

1. Electrocleaning （#1 solution） Application: Used to remove oil from metal work piece surface; Working Environment: 6-14V voltage, take work piece as cathode during operation; 2. Activator #2（#2 solution） Application: Used to remove Oxide film from metal work piece surface; Working Environment: 6-12V voltage, take work piece as anode during operation;( change the switcher into “-“) 3. Activator #3(#3 solution) Application: For carbon steel, cast iron or high carbon containing alloy steel, there will have gray-black dirt left after Activator #2 process. Activator #3 is used to remove the residual dirt. Working Environment: 8-15V voltage, take work piece as anode during operation;( change the switcher into “-“) 4. Chrome Activator(#4 solution) Application: Used to remove Oxide film from Chrome work piece, improve the binding strength between coating and Chrome work piece. Working Environment: 3-8V, take work piece as anode during operation; Water cleaning is not needed after Chrome Activator process, just brush plating Chromium Under-layer Nickel directly. 5. Under-layer Nickel(#5 solution) Application: Used as bottom layer, to improve bonding strength between coating and base material; Working Environment: 6-15V voltage, take work piece as cathode during operation; Before plating (without electricity), wipe work piece by anodes and plating pen. 6. Fast Copper (#6 solution) Application: Used for high speed deposition and heavy build (more than 1mm) copper coating, especially suitable for printing roller pressure pits, scratches, hydraulic pillar strain etc serious damaged work piece repairing. You'll get a better color match using cobalt rather than high speed nickel. Another thing...when you have deep pits or gouged in a piece it's often better, faster and much easier to fill the pit or gouge using preferably tig welding or mig welding if tig isn't available. Then grind back with a die grinder and follow up with brush plating. Started plating in Pearl Harbor Submarine base shop 31A in1982 then owned my own job shop for 30 years using LDC, Selectron and Sifco dalic process. Good luck and best wishes!
