Nice to see Scottish engineering at work. This technology was developed at Edinburgh University by Professor Salter to test his nodding ducks wave generation project. It has since been taken on by Edinburgh designs who have now made wave machines test tanks round the world. Sadly, Stephen Salter has died recently after a long and successful career.

Ups! Nice ad for that tank. But the times where shipping companies test their ships directly in the ocean are long over. Nowadays more than 90% of ocean going vessels are tested in a so-called model test basin. In general they are some 200 to 300 m long and about 20 m wide. Here you can test them in any kind of sea state and sometimes also winds to be sure they are safe at sea - not only in a harbour. You also test there propulsion and propeller data and more. And sure the engineers can recalculate from fresh water to any kind of sea water or even river water. MARIN btw is THE model test basin in the Netherlands.

Several countries do have such institutes including test pools etc. Brittain, Germany, Netherlands and many more. That is not something new. What differs is the advancement, not the seize of the models. It mainly depends on the disired requirements of the shipyards that want to receive the data of the tests. But it is quite remarkable in these times of computer simulations that these semingly oldfashioned methods are still in use; they still provide accurate data that is impossible to aquire using computers only.
