A family heirloom aircraft. Such a decision now certainly brings perspective to doing a good, right job each step of the way. Keep at it, looking forward to seeing it come together.
Thank you very much, yes it means a lot to us. This is not a simple quick project, but it definitely is a learning experience.
Go Steve ! K5LKV ! Very cool !
Thanks!
I wish you all the best in your build! It’s pretty inspiring to see a couple, who are not even pilots yet, take the leap to build an aircraft and just go for it.
Thanks! It's a process but something we can do together, not only as a couple, but as a family as we intend to bring our daughter along for the ride!
So what did you mess up that you now have to go back and remove the skin for it?
The HS center angles, there are two of them, the outside 4 holes. on each, have to be countersunk. Evan warns to make sure you countersink the correct sides, which i noted, but I didn't, and no one tells, WHY. I thought I had done them correctly, but I didn't. I countersunk the incorrect sides. Now I know why. Anyways, new ones are ordered, just waiting for them to come in, then I can finish the HS.
Ohh Man... The baby is walking around and helping build the plane that she will one day fly!!! I Love This!!!
That's the hope!
Congratulations!
TY!
Looking Very good Steve (Huru)
Thanks! Hopefully your kids get challenged to take on projects? Bring them by sometime to see and build!
You said before after a comment I made that the videos are a couple weeks behind actual progress. So maybe this is resolved by now. But for that elevator trim servo, get it installed before finalizing the skins. That includes the nut plates, wiring harness, initial linkage installation, etc. The access cover allows you to relatively easily reach the linkage and harness. Yes, it's a bit of a dexterity test to install and remove the actual servo through that hole, but it's possible in the event of a failure. Especially since the overall mounting screws go in from the outside. Not to discourage, but rather to encourage, you're going to look back at this part of the build as relatively easy and simple once you get into the wings (especially the fuel tanks...) and the fuselage. Where I'm at now. There's a good reason starting with the empennage is a good idea and builds confidence and knowledge before the harder stuff starts.
Yes, the build is usually at least 2 weeks ahead of the videos going online. But please do comment, it makes the build better. I did build in the trim servo, but have not connected the linkage, nor the electrical yet. Now that you say it, probably should have installed the linkage first. I wondered about that, but neither the instructions, nor Evans Video's make that clear. The electrical won't be that hard. Everything else is already done, as per your above. Fuselage is next, yes, it can be complicated, that's why I ask a lot of questions, review multi video's along with the instructions. Wings will be my very last part of the build. I have learned much building the empennage! Please continue to give pointers. Email me, link is on my CZcams page. Thanks!
@@N720S I don't know if there's a particular reason why you're going to the fuselage next. Based on my experience, it's the most complicated part of the build and also the build manual for whatever reason doesn't have as much detail and actually has some errors. The wings, on the other hand, are relatively straightforward and the build manual is more detailed and accurate. If you're looking to build experience and confidence, I'd recommend the wings next. Or at least, build up all the ribs and prepare it for assembly. Also the ailerons and flaps are good experience and similar to the rudder and elevators.
@@paulborror2544 Good morning Mr Borror, Having spoken to several other builders, and just not wanting to store wings for 2-3 years, in which they could be damaged, I decided to go to the fuselage next. The fuselage is 70-80% of the build, takes the longest, so I have time to work on things. I'm disappointed to hear the manual is not as complete as it could otherwise be. And we need to talk voice about the errors. My number is 713.818.5800. Jason, from JasonEllisBuilds (RV-10 build) got damage to his wings while they were being stored, as he worked on his fuselage. After the build, the wings should only take another 3-4 weeks or so to complete towards the end of the build. Then pull everything together... Also, for me cost is a factor, I can't afford the entire kit at once, if I could, i might do the wings first, I have to buy each kit separately as finances come. Sine the fuselage takes the majority of the build, I've decided that is best in my particular case. I'm not doubting that you may be correct that doing the wings as practice to build confidence is good.
@@N720S I'm only a few weeks in on my fuselage and this is my first airplane build. So I'm far from an expert on the subject. I'm just pointing out that based on your videos and the sometimes questions about the manual with your empennage, you're going to find the fuselage "interesting." Perhaps there's a general expectation from the writers that once you get that far maybe you don't need so much guidance. Just pay a lot of attention as you go. As I mentioned, I've found a couple part number errors. Plus directions are sometimes a bit vague and rivet directions aren't always shown. I've been able to figure it out so far and have sent messages to tech support a few times and they've always responded quickly. Based on my research a couple years ago, the most common sequence was empennage -> wings -> fuse. So that's what I'm doing. I too have only purchased kits as I needed them, so I'm with you there. For budget but also for logistics. I wouldn't have room at home for the entire kit at once. I have my wings stored on a rack on my basement and they won't get damaged. But I understand and appreciate the concern. In my opinion, your estimate of 3-4 weeks for the wings is a bit optimistic. They're not particularly hard (I can say that now that I'm completed them...) but the fuel tanks take some serious effort. My build is documented here FWIW: eaabuilderslog.org?s=PaulTSi.
@@paulborror2544 Yes, agreed. Even worse, I'm a non-pilot doing a first time build. I do ask lots of questions, as I build, and I view Evan's Sling Video's over and over. Yes, your correct about the sequence, i'm aware, have just decided to do the wings last as discussed previously. I have saved your build info, and will be reviewing! You have my number, so we can keep in touch over our builds. Yes fuel takes are aggravating to get them sealed completely initially. I'm sure your aware of the Discord Channel for Sling set up by Brian, and also the SlingPilots.com, both have more info to help us. I know there is a FaceBook something, but I don't have facebook. To bad we both aren't in the same city to help each other... I'm alone here, no one else building near me that I'm aware of. Merry Christmas!
Hello Steve, My dad and I are receiving our TSI empennage in about 2 weeks . We are located down in Portland, TX. Home airport is KTFP. Would love to meet up sometime and compare notes?
Yes, absolutely, please do! Lets chat and compare notes. Do you have all the tools yet? 713.818.5800. Its so exciting to start!
Steve great to see you guys working on your build. Cool. Catch you on 94. 73 KK3R
Yes, we continue. Thanks! Yes, absolutely, catch you on air.
Fantastic…wishing you the very best.
Thanks, its a long process, but very rewarding and fun!
W1WHO/ N720S Steve it’s looking great. Wow a lot of detailed work. 🗜️👍 George KK3R
Torque values for the entire kit are listed in the Kit Assembly Instructions (KAI). A lot of other information for the entire build in the KAI. There rather than having the information multiple times throughout the build manuals. I printed the torque chart and hung it above my workbench. The note you say is missing is on the next page. The four bolts holding that assembly to the elevator must be installed before torquing the top bolt.
Yes, I have since found that out. Video's are generally 1-2 weeks behind the actual build. I to have that page now open in the KIA! And yes I found that info also. I've installed the C-Arm, but not torqued it down yet. Can do that later as described. I haven't done the fiberglass yet either, will do that once I have the VS light. Thanks!!!
Man, you must live in a tough neighborhood to walk around your garage with unclipped gun holster 😂
Actually, pretty safe in my neighborhood, but Houston (just North) has had multiple garage's hit by drive up thieves just walking into people garages and robbing them... Plus, most of the time, out of the house, I do carry. Got to protect family!
I've always known that you're a serious kind of a guy, but... Man, you are actually putting this bird together!!! How Very Exciting!!!
Thanks! Join the ride as we build. And since you live relatively nearby, come see it in person, bring your kids!
@@N720S Maybe we can help build it too!!!
Thanks Steve, keep it coming.
More to come!
Brake cleaner (or carb cleaner), not brake fluid! 😊
It was brake cleaner, not brake fluid I have both, but was cleaning the rivet teeth with cleaner, as you suggested. I ran out of the carb cleaner...
Steve great videos. I heard you mention your N720S CZcams channel today on 94. That’s a great tail number. Your craftsmanship and details is amazing. Good luck on the build. Fun to watch a guy make his dreams come true. I dropped a coin in your fund page today. I live in The Galleria area. Mainly listen to 94 but sometimes key up. I hear you often. 73 George Golden KK3R

A few hints based on my TSi build experience so far: (1) You definitely need to get a powered method to pull 2.4mm (3/32") rivets. The sealed 3.2mm (1/8”) rivets for the wing tanks all have a smaller 2.4mm mandrel. Kind of unusual. There are a lot of them and you especially don't want to be slowed down pulling them manually while working with the limited pot life of the sealant. I have the Milwaukee M12 gun plus an air driven gun similar to yours. The Milwaukee gun pulls the 2.4mm rivets just fine. (2) If you pull the trigger on the riveter and hold it, the jaws retract and it's easy to change the tip without loosening anything else. Works for both of the guns I use. (3) I'd really recommend changing your work habits to not place tools, cans of rivets, etc. on the bare skins while working. Make space on your workbench or put some type of protection on the skins. They are very easy to dent. I just happen to know that. (4) Finally, not sure what's happening with your riveter tips, but you're getting quite a bit of damage on your rivets around the mandrel hole. Not a big deal now but when you get to the filling and painting stage, won't be the best appearance. Check to make sure you're using the right size tip and that they don't have a bevel around the hole. You should see a relatively clean and undamaged hole.
Okay, understand. I've been looking for a Milwaukee Rivet gun, but so far, even used ones are same priced as new ones. I'll keep looking. I'll keep it in mind, not to put anything on the skins! I have 3 of the 4 tips needed, all new, and a new set of teeth for the XT2. I'll keep an eye on the Rivet heads as I put them in. Great suggestions, thanks!
Do you know what happens when you keep trying soon you will be flying
Some Day!
Congrats in starting your build. Couple of questions… How long did you have to wait from kit ordering to receiving it? Also, did you order your kit through Torrance or somebody else?
Thanks! Empennage took about 7 months, Fuselage about 4-5 months Yes, via Torrance, TAF has the sole distributorship for the US market. They have ramped up production in SA, so now kits are mostly arriving sooner.
Note sure if the date/time stamp on your video is correct. If so, probably you've done a bunch more dimpling since then. Couple hints based on my TSi build experience. Within reason, the bending to complete the dimples isn't an issue. You'll be doing this a lot more on a bunch of other pieces. You may want to reconsider where your dimpler is located on the stand though. If the nose of the dimpler were sticking out more you wouldn't have to bend so much because of the stand legs. I would also recommend trying to get the aluminum down flat on the lower die half before closing the dimpler. You'll get a cleaner dimple without distortion outside the dimple. Finally, you can wrap a piece of tape around the die to keep it from falling out. I did all the dimpling on mine by myself. But I also had tables on each side the same height as the dimple dies. That helps a lot.
The date stamp is probably not correct, we're still learning all this video stuff... Yes, I looked at the dimpler since your post here. We have it set to the correct heght for the primary work bench, but your correct, and I'll be moving it forward today 6.5 inches. Thanks! I'll also add some tape as suggested Great suggestions, thanks again!
Is it possible to swap the simple pin with the dimple shaft so that the pin is on the bottom, making it easier to line up the hole on the parts you want to make the dimple in? Also, how much do you expect this entire project will cost once you’ve completed it…including paint…and ready to fly?
@@markkirchman2864 Yes, absolutely you (we) can switch the pin (Male) to the bottom position, and I have on my hand dimpler. However, if you do, you have to remember to turn your skins upside down, and for me that's counter-intuitive, so I didn't. But, yes, it is certainly possible. Probably about $225k Give or take depending on options, and such. The more the paint scheme, the higher the cost. Barebones, probably just under $200k.
great job guys keep them coming KI5NPMike
