Cupcake Chronicles
United States
Registrace 16. 11. 2020
We're exploring the country in a 2020 Arctic Fox 990 truck camper on a 2005 4X4 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 diesel dually: that’s our setup. We don't know much about truck campers, but we're learning as we crisscross the United States in search of adventure.
Together we're learning about our RV black & grey water tanks, a finicky refrigerator, solar panel system, things that go bump in the night, and how to cook in a tiny space. We’re traveling, camping, hiking and hoping to toss in some backpacking too. Mountains, lakes, canyons and sunsets, we’re taking it all in from the comfort of our truck camper that we've named Cupcake.
We go where the wind will take us and hope you join the adventure. Click subscribe to get our new videos!

My ex-wife used to make a simple baked halibut dish that cooked in a sealed foil boat. It was fantastic! Onions, peppers, seasoning, and mayonnaise, of all things. I never made it but i remember there wasn't any measuring. I always battered it or cut 3/4" thick pieces, rolled it in corn meal, and fried it.
@@ucanc4myles Thanks, friend! We’ll try it both ways. I especially like the no measuring part. 😆

@@CupcakeChroniclesTC oh man that was flounder size I'm sure you can find larger next time
@@AK2HI that was his smaller keeper. We could each keep one under 31” and one over.
How big?
@@Dailyfishers_4 that was his “under” so we think it was just under 31”. We could each keep one over the size and one under and we’re pretty sure the size is 31”. There were two pieces of black tape on one of the boat’s side rails. They held the fish up to it to measure. If you still needed your “under” and it fit between the tape, it got a whack on the head. 🤣 Unfortunately I didn’t capture Steve’s “over” fish on video. I was either chumming the seas or passed out from the meds for a while. 🤢😎
Wouldn't it be awesome if IKEA built campers.
@@avrilstacy3133 so freaking awesome!! 😎
It looks like a ghost town. I worked there for most of 33 years starting in 1980 till 2013. I have a picture of the Deadhorse sign before all those stickers were there. During that time I also spent six years at Pump Station 5. I worked in electronics and then telecommunications.
@@Chris_at_Home 33years?! That’s impressive. I bet you saw a lot of changes in that time. We were pretty impressed by the parts of it that we could see. Did the pump station have the same kind of rotating schedule? I don’t know how you can stand those cold winters. Wow!!
@@CupcakeChroniclesTC The winters weren’t bad as there is some pretty good Arctic clothing. Prudhoe Bay was very busy in the first half of the 1980s with people working everywhere 24 hours a day. 100 hour work weeks were common back then. We worked no matter what the temperature, but now outdoor work stops at -35. We worked a 2 week on 2 week off schedule most places even at the pump station. This was a great schedule, it was like half my years of working were vacations.
@@Chris_at_Home it’s appealing to us both, the schedule and experience. But probably way too cold. We’re trying to avoid winters nowadays. 🤣
@@CupcakeChroniclesTC Same here, we will always spend summers here though.

We’ve talked about going there too! But one hard road is enough for this summer 😂
How comfortable is that rollover couch? I’m considering one for my next camper
@@jasonlong8625 it seemed pretty comfortable from our tour. But not sure for the long run. Although honestly it can’t be worse than the dinette seats. We got better foam but it’s still not great.
Those beeping mosquitoes! Interesting drive.
We enjoyed the drive when the sun was out, not so much in the rain and mud. The mosquitoes were crazy intense. Crazy.

@@taylerbettendorf haha. That’s awesome! 😎
I’ve got a AF990 and found the same part. I assumed it was for the slide out but didn’t know where to put it. So, I’ll go back to work. Very surprising this happens with a supposedly well built camper. Wish I had the second elbow you two seems to have.
We just checked those again a few weeks back. It’s been about a year and a half. The rollers were still secure, but the bolts in the rear of the camper were starting to back out. We tightened them back down. Luckily, this time it was a one person job. 😀
It's beautiful to look at! How does it taste?
@@ucanc4myles thanks. It tastes like sweet jelly. Honestly it’s not like the spruce tip syrup that tastes awesome and is fun to make. There’s nothing about the jelly that makes it stand out from any other jelly. Except the color and saying I foraged the fireweed. 🤷🏻♀️

Holly smokes, I did this in Winter (Dec). I drove from CA to Deadhorse, AK and back. It was really enjoyable. I stayed at Coldfoot for three days and only one day a Prudhoe Bay Hotel ;) I was the only tourist.
Winter?!? You are hearty! We wouldn't dream of it in the winter. Were the roads crazy bumpy? I just assume that the snow and ice will level out the potholes. There weren't too many tourists in July, so I can't imagine any in the winter! We enjoyed the drive, but we really liked talking with the "locals" who were working the slope.
@@CupcakeChroniclesTC Roads were less bumpy as compared to summer drives however I was never able to get past 40 MPH as my Tacoma felt like was going to lose traction. I detailed my travel both at Tacoma world and Expedition sites. Keep in mind, if you apply brakes (in winter), you almost will certainly be on the side before you realize it. I kept the speed in check and also, I had to keep speed low as the last 150 miles to Deadhorse was complete whiteout condition at -60!
We rarely went above 40 in the summer! Once in awhile we’d creep up to 50, hit a massive pothole, and then go back down to 30. It’s hard to imagine taking this route in the winter. 🥶 The ranger in Coldfoot told us that winter temps can hit -65F. No thanks.🙂↔️
Sounds like Coldfoot could use some updated used camp shacks, I assume newer ones should have better insulation and a bit more modern and less "used" inside. Its probably hard to justify the expense as the camp shacks may have to get hauled from a long ways away depending on what there is to choose from. Can you imagine typical street bikes going through that mud you encountered, on my way back down from the arctic circle ( and yes the mosquitoes were horrendous ) I had stopped at the Yukon river fuel station and talked to a couple that had gone up to Prudhoe but had not done the orientation so no touching water for them. They had a one ton dually with a small true 8 foot older camper on purpose so it was way lighter and much easier to travel with on rough roads. They came across a couple who were on each their own respective street bikes and in the mud and were wiping out trying to climb a certain hill and the wife was all bruised up and they had "HAD IT" LOL, can you imagine having to pick up a street bike repeatedly after wiping it out and fenders plugged with mud so that the front tire wouldn't turn. Now that was a couple on an adventure to hell and beyond !. Totally wrong equipment to be on that road when its muddy. Then at that same service station ( such as it is ) along came two Harleys headed north with the goal of getting to the arctic circle sign ( this was mid morning ) and they asked me what the road was like and I said its perfect right now with beaten down smoothed tracks for motorcycles but have to watch when pulling off of them for passing traffic. I said yesterday evening it was no good as it was muddy for street bikes. They thanked me and off they went as they were only going to go up that far and then turn around and get out of there. And quite a few days later by pure fluke in timing as I was headed down the Cassiar highway there were a couple of bikes ahead of me and they pulled into the Deese Lake fuel station and they recognized me and we talked about their trip and they said yes the Dalton road was good like I said and they had no issues at all. They were hotel-ling it all the way, from Minnesota up and back, using the Mile Post book to find a hotel for each night. That is 19 years ago now so I don't know if it would be that easy to find a room with how busy it seems to be up there with tourism from the impression I get.
