    In the 60s, bass was not really considered a lead instrument. It was just there to give the bottom a bit of movement. Paul was one of the first to start using more melodic bass lines and it only got better from there. He was a (the) major factor in that movement.

  • @Neil-qf6df
    @Neil-qf6df Před 6 hodinami

    Personally for me i find the bass easier to play, i am 59 and my brain doesn't think as fast as it used to and the generally slower pace of the bassline compared to the guitar is easier for me to follow, also the bassline tends to be more repetitive and that works for me also

    you don’t have to say it I will . You are a much better musician than John Lennon could have ever hoped to be! no sabotage He just sucked at playing bass just as bad as he sucked on guitar. His choice in women was even worse.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist Před 5 hodinami

      I agree about the lack of sabotage - I say this in the video. I disagree with the first part of your comment though. Firstly because being a ‘better’ musician is purely subjective, and secondly because being an musician includes more than just proficiency in one or more instruments. Sure, I might have more technical fluency on bass (again, largely subjective) but Lennon was one of the best and most influential songwriters of his generation. I don’t consider myself to be even close to being in the same league as him.

      @@BecomeABassist I respect what you think but as you can tell I don’t think much of John Lennon. In my opinion you are a much more knowledgeable and proficient musician than Lennon. That puts you leagues ahead in my book. John was way over rated.

    I like it when the root note follows the kick drums perfectly, while in the other beats the bass creating it's own melody, so it's basically follows the drum pattern, but maybe it skips 1 note or adds extra notes, but the root notes are on beat with the kick drums. Sorry, I'm not a bass player, so I can't really explain it, but I do experimenting with songwriting and this is what I noticed.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist Před dnem

      Exactly! Just move the shapes around your bass to the new 'key' and you'll be good to go. For example, if the key you're looking to play in is 2 frets above, simply move all the shapes up 2 frets.

    The problem I get into with these type lessons is for example formula 3 is a minor scale and your formula 5 is a major scale. It takes me some time to sort that mess out, to me it would be beneficial to "call" the scale ( major, minor, pentatonic ) prior to the pattern ( 1,5, 7) and so on. My food for someone's thought.... I appreciate ya.

    • @BecomeABassist

      Everything in this video is based on the Mixolydian scale since that’s the one that generally works best for these types of chords.

    This technique is the whole of the Sanford and Son theme song and Barney Miller as well. The beauty of this idea is that you can translate the coming idea/chord to anyone with good ears and they can hear where the song is going next. Pay attention guitar players, this is how the smart old guys expect you to pick these things up. Don’t follow your band. Drive with them. These musical moves are your roadmap. If you shut up and listen, a great band is telling you musically where to go. Then how you arrive is up to you. Not blind luck. Excellent explanation of a sophisticated method to keep everyone on track! Greetings from New Mexico!

    What about the ringing from plucking open strings?

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist Před 6 dny

      For the strings that sound higher than the string you plucked, you generally mute those with the fretting hand, and for the strings that sound lower than the one you pluck, you generally mute those with the fingers of the plucking hand. For example, if you pluck an open D string, the finger you plucked with will usually land on the A-string and mute that one, and you can use your thumb to mute the E-string. Your fretting hand can graze the G-string so it doesn't ring out.

    Alchemy. Lennon's post Beatles efforts demonstrate who lacked talent. :-) I insist that John Lennon was tone deaf and was only able to sing harmony the same way a dog matches a passing siren with its howl in an effort to equalize the discomfort of the inner ear.

  • @DanCourtemanche
    @DanCourtemanche Před 6 dny

    As a beginner in the literal meaning of the term, not a beginner from another instrument, not a beginner who has learned the basics, but a true beginner, I find it a huge barrier that every bass teacher for beginners chooses songs that are too hard, or that only have an easy riff, but the rest of the song is impossible for a true beginner. Can we please start with a song which is slow and easy from beginning to end? Beginners need enough time to get their hands and fingers in position, figure out muting, play along in time and pick the stings properly. That is a ton to keep track of. A song please, that's slow, easy, just quarter notes, beginning to end. Not just riffs, not just intros, but a recognizable song easy enough that you could put a bass in the hands of someone who has never played an instrument, and can play along. I hope you take this to heart Luke.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist Před 6 dny

    • @DanCourtemanche
      @DanCourtemanche Před 5 dny

      @@BecomeABassist Thank you for taking my question seriously. Slower and more standard please. There is one note in that song true, but for an absolute beginner, someone random on the street you gave a bass guitar to, me who struggles for years with songs that are too hard,it is not slow, there are these "x" notes, and it is slap. Already three things for more advanced beginners. When things are fast it can be a challenge to play along to, you fall out, you are running after the next note, and it doesn't sound good. And I am not ready for slap, nor is slap something for an absolute beginner. The muting is harder with slap.Slow and easy finger-plucking please. Absolute beginners need to play along, figure out muting and strike the strings properly and consistently. Only those three .things. This song is for a later beginner, not an absolute beginner. Thanks

    Id say D still works in the song. Just like Db

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist Před 17 dny

      D works as a note in the song, since it's part of the key, but the moment he's playing that D, the chord is an Eb7, which uses a Db, which is what Paul intended to be there. If you listen to Paul play this song live, his bass players play a Db over that chord, not a D.
