    I think the style is great on you but as you say, maybe the fabric is a bit too casual for your look. Likewise I agree the pocket doesn’t work for you. The dropped shoulder looks great but I suspect it is too wide on the shoulder

    For the skirt, you shared you starched the fabric for easier construction. Was the fabric still, starched when it hung letting the fabric drop? Would the starch interfere with the fabric drop?

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome Před dnem

      it was still starched. i can't say for sure but i doubt that it had any impact on the hem dropping. the fabric was more sturdy and easier to work with but it wasn't as stiff as a board or anything. it still had a lot of movement.

  • @patriciaferrito9245

    I'd be careful removing the pocket. In that fabric , it might be difficult. I'd suggest sewing a button on to the top of the pocket, thru to the shirt. That will hold the saggy pocket in place. But yes, if you do it again- move the pocket or leave it off.

  • @HilaryGreen

    I totally love your video idea and will watch it for sure! Also, i too (like everyone else in the comments lol) agree that the pocket in the first shirt doesn't do any good. Maybe make it shorter or smaller and put it higher up, but i would just completely remove it and leave the shirt as it is. Also, i think it looks really great on you, at least from that footage. Maybe wear it with some baggier high waist jeans, that are still fitting around the hips, to create a nice shilouette with that shirt. Still, if you don't like how it looks on you and don't feel comfy in it, then don't feel pressured to wear it.

    • @knottygnome

    Such lovely makes. I LOVE the fabric you made your bias cut slip skirt out of. It's gorgeous. Your sild matching set is also divine! I actually quite like the contrast of the twill tape drawstring.

  • @lynngates1662
    @lynngates1662 Před 2 dny

    I love all your makes! And I do like the white shirt 😁 and its big pocket - I think the decision about that big pocket is that it's unique and unexpected; I would probably use that, but I haven't been that height since maybe grade school haha so I would look differently on me. I was curious about the shoulder seam, is it maybe a yoke seam? Which would sit forward? The back hem is a little lower, and I didn't catch the line drawing. A lot of my button-up patterns, especially the older ones have a yoke which 'wraps' over the shoulder with the front seam a little forward. Re the buttonhole sides.. you're right, that is easy to change and it avoids fumbling. Style Arc continues to put all the buttonholes on all pants on the right side, even jeans, and it drives me nuts. Not easy to change. Tried it 😖 Anyway, I'm also a fan of I AM patterns, and now I want that shirt.😍 I love the co-ord set as well! Curious again, and been wanting to ask if you're in Ithaca? I wanted to show my brother some of your backgrounds to see if he recognized anything rather than just ask. 🤭 Great video!

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome Před 2 dny

      well, to give you way too detailed an answer...the yoke is not intended to wrap to the front. a lot of my oversized shirts tend to shift forward, which from what i can tell is actually the opposite of what happens when you need a forward shoulder adjustment. i looked up a "backwards shoulder" and apparently it's so rare as to be almost non-existent so i'm not sure that is my actual issue. i suspect that i might need a petite adjustment, b/c i think i am slightly short in length from my shoulders to my chest. but i haven't been able to solve it yet and it's not always a problem so i haven't been super motivated to work it out. i do not discuss where i live publicly for safety reasons. i'd be happy to share privately. you can DM me on instagram or send an email.

    • @lynngates1662
      @lynngates1662 Před 11 hodinami

      @@knottygnome Thanks 😊 My shirts often fall back on my shoulders. I often have to deepen or add back neck shaping to shirt or sweater necklines as my neck sits farther up on my shoulders (looking at you Olya haha) I have made a couple other patterns that that yoke seam is up top. That's why I've not asked before, and I'll get around to that some day 😘 You're great!

  • @ChristineSewsALot
    @ChristineSewsALot Před 2 dny

    I absolutely love your silk set! I was wondering about starching the silk. Did you use a liquid starch? I hesitated getting a silk during the call out as I had never sewn with it before.

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome Před 2 dny

      i use best press, which is a spray starch alternative. the only reason i settled on that particular product is b/c i have loads of it from when i was quilting. regular starch would probably work fine too. you just have to wash it out when you are done with the garment. my first time sewing with silk charmeuse was a total nightmare. using starch is a huge game changer.

    I have noticed that most patterns with pockets have the same exact size pocket for the smallest size and the largest size. I have recently taken to reducing the size of the pocket as I always make the smallest size and that is working well for me. I know you are a small person as well and maybe the pocket is just too big.

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome Před 2 dny

      yes, i agree ❤️

    • @SunShine-000
      @SunShine-000 Před dnem

      I think I would wear that white gauze IAM Patterns top open as a jacket or a cami. And agree that if the pocket were lower it wouldn’t look odd at all and more like a layering piece. I found it curious that the buttons were on the other side on it and wonder if all their button ups are like that. Back when Kamala Harris was inaugurated, I noticed that her designer coat had the buttons on the opposite side (as a sewer, I notice these things, don’t you?) and have always wondered if intentional! So now IAM Patterns has peaked my interest! 😂 Suzanne ❤

  • @kathecampomanes1154

    I think the proportion of the white double gauze is off for your petite frame. I would take off about an inch to an inch and a half from both the arm scye and sleeve and either reduce the size of the pocket or eliminate it. The added weight is likely the reason it wants to slip to the front. Just my 2 cents. Let us know if you end up changing it. ❤

    Wow! that silk is so gorgeous😍 You managed it beautifully! Everything you made looks great on you. I see what you mean about the first blouse. The drifting would drive me crazy too. In addition to removing the pocket (or scaling it down) I would be tempted to add a peplum tier to match the scale of the sleeves... not too gathered or it might look babyish. You could continue the placket or not (but probably better to continue the placket) So it would be oversized and no longer cropped. More like a tunic that would look great over jeans and jerseys and tights etc.... (assuming you have more double-gauze). I always enjoy your videos! Thank you😊

  • @upcycledcopycat8389

    Everything looks really good on you. 10 outta 10

  • @upcycledcopycat8389

    The white shirt... A suggestion!!! Maybe remove the sleeves and take in the dropped shoulder a bit, it might just need about an inch to sit a little bit more flattering? I recentlyade an jacket topper thing and added an inch (it is supposed to be cropped) but I'm 5'8".and the inch just doesn't look enough so I'm planning on adding a hem facing about an inch instead of regular hem. Maybe the shirt could benefit from a hem facing?

    • @knottygnome
      @knottygnome Před 2 dny

      you might be right but altering double gauze is a huge PITA so i will save your suggestions for next time (if there is one).

    • @upcycledcopycat8389
      @upcycledcopycat8389 Před 2 dny

      @@knottygnome... I've altered gauze by throwing it in the wash then rolling it into a long cylindrical tube thing "sorta" to dry so it's all mushed up. Then when it's all creased up it's easier to alter before it starts to grow. The biggest pain might be the white bobbin thread on the white textured fabric. Removing it. If I remember I usually put beige or yellow thread in the bobbin in case I have to use a seam ripper to remove the stitches. That usually saves me many headaches.

    Thank you Sara, such a great video. I don’t consciously follow trends but always like to know what’s going on , and probably am influenced from time to time. I am a casual dresser which reflects my lifestyle and continue to enjoy wearing denim, but wouldn’t wear double denim !!! I plan to make my first denim dress this Autumn , but just can’t decide on a pattern, I also love that Boho blouse which would look great with jeans or a maxi denim skirt.

      i think that double denim can work on some people but for me it's hard to get the image of britney/justin out of my head. thanks for watching!

    Like others, I don't tend to dress from trends, but I do appreciate being inspired by them to explore new ideas! This was a great round-up!

    I'm the same as you - love to look at the trends and just use them for inspiration - I don't follow them blindly. As much as I love bright colors - I'm kind of excited about Burgundy for some reason 🤣 The Vintage Elegance trend is beautiful but I have absolutely no place to wear any of those styles. I love the high neck look so I need to think about different ways I can incorporate that. 🌸. Animal prints are a neutral in my world 🤣. I will always wear them!! 🌸 I would totally wear a metallic suit to the office when I have to travel for work - that would be very cool. 🌸 I am a big fan of boho - that style has my name all over it. As usual, you came up with a really fun idea for a video 😊💕

      thanks, Michelle! i completely agree that animal prints are neutrals. and i could totally see you rocking a metallic business suit!

    I love your videos. You always have such a thoughtful take on fashion. I had to laugh when you mentioned the poet blouse because I knew exactly what you meant. I had one myself in high school, but I was also thinking of an episode of Seinfeld where it was either Jerry or Kramer who wore a poet type blouse I think. I don’t remember the premise just the visual image. That’s how trendy it was I guess. lol. Anyway I agree that it would be fun to reinterpret that for today. You’ve also got me thinking of sewing a paisley blouse. Thanks for the inspiration!

      you're welcome! i'm glad someone else remembers those poet blouses--they were everywhere!

    I usually don’t follow trends, but I love to hear and see them. However, I may follow this Fall because they are all my favorites!!! Well, minus the bohemian style. Thanks for sharing!

      i agree--there were an unusual number of wearable trends this year! well, i did purposely leave out some of the unwearable ones, like the no-pants trend.

    I think the only trend I am leaning toward is oxblood… I really want to make the knit tank vest from Madewell.

      i knit a burgundy sweater vest a few years back--i'm definitely going to be wearing it more this year. hope you can recreate your perfect vest!

    I really enjoy seeing all your pattern picks! I will be pulling out a few leopard print things for fall. There are a couple of nice burgundy fabrics in my stash - now I’m dreaming of how to work them into my wardrobe. Thank you for all the care you put into your videos.

    Thanks for the great pattern ideas. I don't really follow trends but I definitely like boho, if it's not over the top, and denim is a staple in my closet. I kept my faux fur hooded thigh length coat from 20 years ago so no need to sew one. I just have to dust it 😂

      absolutely! i have a leopard faux fur coat too. i don't wear it much b/c it's overly hot most of the time...but maybe if we have a cold winter.
