Onion was a tough older horse and would not fold like the 3yo. No excuses. The next time they met Lucien put Riva Ridge in to keep Onion from getting soft lead, but looking at the stats Onion never ran well at Belmont but broke 6.5 f track record at Saratoga. Onion and Prove Out especially the latter tore the Lucien pair apart.

Secretariat fan's excuses. Take Prove out, out of this race and secretariat's time and distance over the older horses would have made this run better than his Belmont stakes 3yo baby race. He got thumped by older horse's and that is normal. Stop making excuses. Funny how everyone waited for the trainer to die before the excuses started.

The horrible graphic garbage ruins the race. Instead of the horses we have to watch the fat guy in the truck w his stupid CGI buttons. Justify reminded me of Seattle Slew (who was in his lineage). Get to the front and stay there. Speed and endurance. Just needed to race more

All due to a genetic anomaly. His heart was, literally, about 1.5 times normal size. In essence, his heart pumped so much oxygenated blood to his muscles, his muscles never got tired.

You can see on the backstretch Sham's head is pumping almost twice as fast as Secretariat as he tries to keep up with Big Red's pace. Trying to keep that pace sent Sham all the way to last place!! Secretariat was just on another level. He truly was a super horse. No horse could have beat him that day.

Sloppy track cost big red

2 and 3/5 seconds - that’s a LOT to break a record by! And it STILL STANDS in 2024 (set 1973) he was the greatest horse I’ve ever seen.

I was there. It was an incredible day. We were right at the finish line. 150th Belmont stakes and Justify for the triple crown. Historical!
