Star Wars (1977)
Considered by many to be Williams' definitive work, "Star Wars" changed the game. It elevated him to elite status and, although he would go on to do other definitive scores such as "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark", "ET" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Star Wars" remains Williams' definitive work. Like John Barry's work on James Bond, eight sequels and multiple tv shows later, Williams' iconic themes from the original film remain immediately identifiable.
And, like Charles Scheer before him, George Lucas understood he needed to elevate his then fledgling idea of a space opera, to another level. Untested actors, untested special effects and a story line no one seemed to understand put him behind the eight ball. While Lucas' had enjoyed success with "American Graffiti", his previous foray into sci fi, "THX-1138" had fallen flat at the box office and led to the demise of Francis Coppola's American Zoetrope Studios.
So there were real concerns about the effectiveness of the film prior to it's release. It didn't help that early screenings of the film only had temp score and place holder effects so it was difficult to gage what was working.
Most cast and crew members agree, it wasn't until they say the film with the full audio post, vex and score by Williams that they began to see Lucas' vision. John Williams work on "Star Wars" could be likened to The Force in that it is the energy that binds the Star Wars universe together.

Jaws (1975)

Before George Lucas changed the game with "Star Wars", Steven Spielberg changed the game with "Jaws" creating the idea of the "summer blockbuster". "Jaws" redefined summer theatrical releases and that was in no small part toJohn Williams' score. The mechanical and technical issues Spielberg's crew encountered with "Bruce" their "shark" are legendary and forced Spielberg to rely on editing and s...

Goldsmith again showed his range with the incredibly atmospheric and moody score to "Alien". Ridley Scott chose a shooting and editorial style that heavily played up the suspense to create tension and Goldsmith created the perfect accompaniment. One of his very best.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
zhlédnutí 40Před 2 lety
The Poseidon Adventure is another score that showcases the brilliance of Williams. Again, if you watch these opening credits with the sound down you see, essentially, what it is- a model ship in a wave pool with some atmospherics and good use of slo motion. Add Williams' score, and you have "The Poseidon Adventure". Still a favorite and, if you listen really carefully at the end you can hear el...

By the second season, "Land of the Giants" was running on empty but Williams' updated score was still firing on all cylinders! Brass, brass and more brass!
Land of the Giants (1968)
zhlédnutí 237Před 2 lety
Land of The Giants represented the end of the road for a genre that started back with Dr. Cyclops. Although the 70's would give us Dr. Shrinker, "Land of the Giants" was the last attempt at giants in prime time. Williams' score does not disappoint, like so much of the work he did for Irwin Allen.
The Time Tunnel (1966)
zhlédnutí 139Před 2 lety
John Williams extended his association with Irwin Allen with tv's "Time Tunnel", a relationship that would extend into the 70's. This is still one of Williams' funkiest and an early pre-courser to his work on "land of the Giants". What can I say, the man has skills. Unfortunately, in many cases, this was the best part of the show.
Lost In Space (1965)
zhlédnutí 245Před 2 lety
John Williams was scoring features years before he worked in television but his television work prior to Star Wars is some of his most compelling in my opinion. Perhaps because these are the programs of my youth but Williams' tv scores are up there with Schifrin and Goldsmith. Here's the first season theme for the original "Lost In Space". You can hear his devotion to strong brass.
Capricorn One (1978)

The was a period in the 70's when some films opened cold with just credits in black and a driving score. "The French Connection", "The Seven Ups" and this smaller film from auteur Peter Hyams that features a banging opening credits scene that's field by Goldsmiths score. If you want to get a sense of how important score is to this sequence, watch it the first time with the sound off then re-wat...
The Omen (1976)

Jerry Goldsmith collaborated with Richard Donner of 1976's classic "The Omen", a collaboration that lasted through two sequels. Dark and with eerie religious overtones, the score was the perfect complement to Donner's dark entry into the demonic movies of the early 70's.
Seconds (1966)
zhlédnutí 182Před 2 lety
A discordant score for a discordant film, Goldsmith re-united with Frankenheimer on this dark story of identity and "rebirth". More baroque in style, "Seconds" is an entirely different flavor for Goldsmith and shows his early versatility.
In Like Flint (1967)

The incredible success of James Bond launched a cottage industry of spy themed entertainment. Bond knock offs were everywhere as the Cold War escalated but the genre reached it's saturation point when comedies began to emerge like tv's Maxwell Smart and Dean Martin's Matt Helm. James Coburn added his ultra cool ladies man and all around duper genius to the field with "Our Man Flint" and the 196...
Seven Days In May (1964)
zhlédnutí 859Před 2 lety
Teaming up with one of his early television collaborators, John Frankenheimer and Rod Serling, Goldsmith produced a great score for this political thriller about an attempted military coup military of the US government. It's sparse and taunt to create the edge needed to set off the story.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1965)
zhlédnutí 185Před 2 lety
Like so many other great feature composers of the 70's, Jerry Goldsmith got his start scoring tv shows. While they were considered a step down from features at that time, Goldsmith and fellow composers like John Williams, cut their teeth in this relatively new arena. Goldsmith's work on "The Man From UNCLE" is as dynamic and classic as Lalo Schifrin's on "Mission Impossible".
Bernard Herrmann - Taxi Driver (1976)
zhlédnutí 42Před 2 lety
Martin Scorcese was such a fan of Bernard Herrmann he asked him to score his 1976 classic "Taxi Driver". While you might think that would be an odd match, Herrmann produced one of his most compelling score's, in my opinion. Like his work with Hitchcock and Schneer, Herrmann's contribution to "Taxi /Driver" is almost like that of any other character in the film. Outstanding.
