I’m convinced that no sandbox/physics has ever nor will ever come close to the pure perfection, unmitigated elegance, and gorgeous refinement that is Halo 3. They just took Halo 2 and perfected it. Any critiques are minimal and already accounted for by good developing. Ie a lot of equipment is annoying and unbalanced like radar jammer, and a few others but they leave those for the campaign and out of Multiplayer mostly, the good ones that are actually balanced and dynamic are the ones we get for radar play (drain, regen, bubble) Any other critique is so nitpicky it’s almost pointless, like the Spiker/Magnum are largely useless, but the weapon selection is so wonderful that it really doesn’t matter, there are so many moments in Matchmaking where a plasma pistol, plasma rifle, assault rifle, brute plasma, brute shot, Mauler, carbine are all useful and relevant. To introduce 5-6 new weapons for Halo 3 that were nearly all fun and balanced and had their moments was a seriously incredible feat. The typical power weapons are perfectly balanced against the BR IMO, the needler is niche but it has its moments. To me vehicles aren’t the type of Halo I love most, but they are also balanced and fun, open the door for so much wonderful custom game stuff, and ofc BTB. If you coordinate, you can legit BR a banshee down with a few teammates. But hard to do solo. Add the possibility of a laser on map and That’s balance. You can grab a Banshee and go on a running riot with precise movement or get killed instantly. Both happen with some even distribution curve in the middle. Everything about the sandbox is refined and dialed. Reload times, animations, gravity, jump height, crouch mechanics, melee mechanics, grenade throwing and physics of different types, at different angles and surface types is so sophisticated it’s wild. Grenade throws literally carry inertia from your character movement. Everything about the player movement / jumping and how that interacts with the map design is simply a chefs kiss. And watching the best players do it in real time is literally performance art. I don’t think any shooter, let alone Halo, will produce another Multiplayer as flawless and beguiling. The best thing they could do is dev support H3 on MCC OR make the most unbelievably faithful reconstruction of the Halo 3 sandbox in every Halo going forward whether that be an H3 remake or anything else. I mean faithful to an ABSURD degree. Str8 copycat. And boy do the graphics hold up just fine. Show me someone that doesn’t think Halo 3 is an S-tier executed game and I’ll show you a lobotomy patient.
