I retired in Dec of 2018, as a SGM with 31 yrs of active duty. I’m still hearing “getting back to the basics”. Maintenance is still broke, and enforce standards. I don’t know why this is being echoed, is there a disconnect in the formations? One issue that we saw when GWOT ended, was the lack of garrison soldering knowledge. The biggest reason for these gaps was because of the OPTEMPO the army during those years. Units were were being deployed every other year. So I forgot the name of training cycle that army use for deploying down range. But it was a cycle that was impossible to meet and check off all the boxes. Stating that the unit was trained, validated, and ready to deploy. What came down from higher up was to focus and train on the task that the unit was going to conduct while in the fight. During this time all training throughout the army was focused on warfighting, and the garrison task were significantly diminish. These young war fighters were given the name DOORKICKERS! They did their job extremely well, but all of the soldiers were never exposed to real genuine what I call garrison soldering. Meaning they never learned how to put together training, SGT Time Training was eradicated, the soldiers never learned how to navigate through soldier issues, meaning if soldiers had issues what resource can they go to for help, in my opinion it was lost during this period. Really no fault of any one, but it was just the high OPTEMPO. The observation was they never learned the true art of soldering. Now these soldiers are senior leaders in the army, so my question is this a symptom of GWOT? I remember my last assignment was at FT Hood as a BDE OPS SGM and I was training senior NCOs (SFC, MSG, and 1SG on how to do their jobs, not mentoring, but training them there is a difference. I just wonder if this is the symptoms of GWOT?
