    As far as “what purpose does it serve” I would say you’re right - there’s no apparent game mechanic or incentive for its existence. But the extra trainers and EXP are really helpful for the jump in difficulty following Erika. You get the Super Rod here and it’s another opportunity to catch the rare Snorlax. It’s as optional as the bike path is too, btw; and as noted, both have drawbacks. From a dev standpoint, it kind of is filler, but when the routes directly surrounding Saffron City are so short and generally uninteresting, you have to fill the extra space in the map somehow haha. And I think they did a good job to make it interesting from a world-building perspective. The fishing community on the piers; the birdkeepers and junior trainers using the fence maze (which is interesting, even if annoying) as a guaranteed way to improve their skill with passing trainers. It’s neat! All this to say I also don’t really like Southeast Kanto lmao but I almost always fight the trainers there for the EXP.

    I think a large part of it is you are looking at it in the eyes of someone who has played it all, looking in hindsight. When I played FRLG as a kid, I couldn't find the tea to give the cops to get into Saffron, so I took cycling road down to fuschia. I beat Koga, but couldn't find surf, so I went the only option that was left, and that was South East Kanto. I didn't know it was going to be hollow, but I enjoyed facing more trainers, and gave me a Dark Souls Fire Link Shrine elevator moment (as someone who got the map and forgot about it). I was then able to circle back around to Celadon, find the tea, go to Saffron, instead of begrudgingly backtracking up cycling road. SE Kanto is simply an option to go if you get stumped without forcing the player to turn around. They could have been better designed routes with better pay off in them, but as a kid going in blind, it's more game to play, and a potential way forward if you are lost. Although I was pissed about the tea thing since the cops were like, "I'm so thirsty," when I had the fucking fresh water in my bag, and was just yelling, "TAKE IT! IT'S WATER! YOU WON'T BE THIRSTY!" As an adult it, makes me even more mad Gen I had it right, then they chose to change the puzzle for Gen III.

    • @tortoisecity
      @tortoisecity Před 12 dny

      having multiple options for going forward is definitely legit, and while it could have been a more interesting route overall, it does still fulfill that legitimate purpose. I did look at it with the eyes of a blind player (having not traveled down this route in years, this was not difficult) and found it lacking in interesting content or ideas still. The tea thing in FRLG is pretty baffling though no doubt. Thanks for your comment!

    • @ThatGamerDude9000
      @ThatGamerDude9000 Před 12 dny

      @@tortoisecity could be wrong, it's been years since I played, but I believe you can only block yourself off in the fence maze if coming from the North. I haven't rewatched the video, but I remember part of your agita with the routes was blocking yourself off in the maze, having to leave to reset the trainer positions, then come back. I think it truly was intended for you to do the routes coming from Fuschia. Blocking yourself off coming from Lavender/Vermillion might have been a design oversight from designers only considering the route from 1 direction. Either that, or coming from Fuschia was the oversight, and they actually intended you to solve a maze you can block yourself off in. The routes may be lacking in general, but the slog could be heavily exacerbated by the direction you decide to tackle it from. Looking back, as a kid I see how I was funneled toward fuschia through the cycling road route. You see the one Snorlax east of Vermillion early in the game, but by the time you get the pokeflute, that Snorlax is a distant memory (you have since walked back to Cerulean, went through Rock Tunnel (potentially for awhile if you got lost without flash), travelled from Lavender to Celadon, potentially beat Erika, gone through the rocket hideout in Celadon, then went back to Lavender to beat Team Rocket at Pokemon Tower), and the one west of Celadon is a lot more recent, so I felt like "ok, celadon was my last gym badge, but west celadon was blocked off. That must be the way to go, since now I got this thing that can wake up snorlax. Let me go back there." The game is an open world after Rock Tunnel, so it's hard to say what order players will do stuff. The only set in stone limiters for story progression at that point are rocket hideout before pokemon tower (technically not if you have a pokedoll), pokemon tower before silph co. (I think, although that might just be Gen III onwards), pokemon tower before Koga, silph co. before Viridian Giovanni, Koga before Blaine (need Surf), and all badges before Victory Road. Anything else CAN be done in any order. Heck, even Lt. Surge can be put off for awhile, if you don't mind missing fly. I don't know if Nintendo intended for the game to be as open as it was. Nintendo may have intended a certain path, but didn't breadcrumb enough, or, because it was the early 90s, didn't realize they didn't block off certain ways to go through the game world (I mean, look at all the gen 1 bugs, like badge boost, missingno, and pokedoll pokemon tower). The game was rushed for sure, and maybe they made the routes early, had plans for it, but come crunch time, forgot to properly block it off, or just threw together what they could, too proud to scrap the idea.

    • @tortoisecity
      @tortoisecity Před 11 dny

      all legit things they could have done before rushing to get it out, and it's not the games came out terribly or anything (on the contrary), so I can forgive this route being uninteresting in the grand scheme of things (but not enough to not make a video about how I think it's bland)

    I just prefer pixel-art esp Yellow/Gen2 sprites and simple mechanics: no natures, no abilities, no IVs, no EVs... I think TMs/HMs just saturate the movepools and make the games boring. What if every Flying Pokemon could "Fly" and every Water Pokemon could "Surf" from the menu without ever knowing the move... What if movepools were more niche, like only Blastoise could learn Water Gun as Squirtle and Hydro Cannon as Blastoise and no other Pokemon could learn those moves... Everytime I see Gen1 Seaking I think, dang it learns Waterfall naturally before it was ever an HM how cool is that... then I'm reminded that Surf outclasses every water move and saturates every Water Pokemon...

Pikasprey even did a Softlock video pointing out how it's possible to completely screw yourself if your save file no longer has a source of money (especially in Red and Yellow, where you're unable to catch Meowth, the only Pokemon that learns Pay Day naturally).

    Gen 3's cycling road felt like the most fun to do over again because of that dude at the bottom that told you your number of collisions and total time to reach him. I went back up the road and tried to improve my time on several times until I was happy with the result. It doesn't mean anything, but sometimes, you just wanna do the challenge because you know you can do better than your earlier performances, so you aim for that. I mostly remember spending a lot of time on Gen 4's route to hatch eggs, going up and down that bridge SO MANY TIMES! In my head I started to rename it the egg hatching bridge. Overall I agree with this list. Gen 3 definitely had the best one. A few turns and a reason to go back and do it again, should you be competitively inclined. Even if that competition is only with yourself and doesn't offer a tangible reward.

    In fairness, IIRC Pokemon gen 1 was originally meant to be quite a lot bigger than it ended up being due to lack of memory space among other things. Case in point the trainer in Cinnabar who claims your Raichu evolves because originally Pikachu was a 3 evolution monster #justiceforGorochu. A good few of the pokemon who were designed for gen 1 didn't end up making it into pokemon until gen 2 due to game limitations. It's possible originally SEKanto was meant to contain more towns and/or optional gyms along the lines of Celadon's fighting dojo maybe? Certainly it probably contained more pokemon that would have been unique to that route. If you take the anime into consideration where Gary shows off his ten badges when every pokemon fan knows there's only 8 possible gyms could there have been plans originally for more gyms? It certainly always seems more.. barren than the other areas in terms of things to do. I also wonder if there wasn't originally more to do with the power plant that never made it into fruition. The powerplant always felt a bit shoved in there last minute to me, with no indication unless you're determined to explore every single nook and cranny heading back to an area that by the time you have surf you have no need to head back to, just to find a power plant with no logical explanation for it ever having been needed within the storyline. Even the final cave holding Mewtwo is given more signs that it exists and holds something big, but that powerplant? Nothing. Have to wonder how many other things got left on the cutting room floor and never picked up again even on the remakes because they weren't needed in the end.

      @@tortoisecity Hopefully someone finds a way one day, I would play the heck outta that version. It would be really cool if Gamefreak were to recreate pokemon red and Blue (and Gold and Silver for that matter, considering how many changes had to be made for that game too), with the old ideas in place. I think the older fans at least would prefer to buy those over the mess that pokemon is currently becoming.

      @@tortoisecity I should like to mention that I dislike this sort of retroactive criticism of Gen 2 myself, cause it's applying modern day Pokemon standards to a time when they didn't exist. In-game, the lore specifically for the new Pokemon is "Newly Discovered Pokemon." They aren't explicitly Johto Pokemon, nor does anyone call them that, so this is why new mon are showing up in old areas of Kanto as well. Gym Leaders weren't expected nor designed to be megaphones for new pokemon in this era, nor was there an expectation of that from the player base either. For all intents and purposes, Gen 2 was designed truly as a sequel, almost like a Red and Blue part 2, and it does what it sets out to do very well. The remakes naturally, wouldn't really change too much of this either, by nature. They allow you the newly introduced evolutions, like Magmortar if you have the requirements, but the in-game lore is still the same.

    • @tortoisecity
      @tortoisecity Před 12 dny

      it might be the case that the lore was designed that way, but nothing about that particular lore is inevitable, and quite feasibly they could have chosen to make it mildly different in a way that allows the player to use more of the new pokemon as they naturally progress through the game. Lore is a fine reason for something to be, but like the odd distributions of the new pokemon, they made it up, and thus had the opportunity to do better in that respect as well.

  • @allison.al.allison.al.

    I think that the Cycling Road phasing out from Gen V onwards may also be related to how the Unova games have many bridges, and these are long and largely uninterrupted stretches - they're definitely not replacements & don't have all the same functions as a Cycling Road, but are similar enough that it would feel redundant w/ all the bridges around.

    I think this is an area that would have benefitted greatly from a "rest stop" about halfway through. As it is, the road between Lavender Town and Fuschia City is BRUTAL in that your only healing options are to stock up on supplies and spend a good chunk of money, or keep running back to Lavender Town to heal. It could have used a building where you could rest for a bit, like the old woman's house in Hoen. Interestingly enough, I've been playing through Yellow for the first time while on a quest to play every game to completion, and I was literally just wanting to my coworker about this the other day. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but the road from Lavender to Fuschia is paved with boardwalks, dirt roads, and incompetent trainers who need more variety in their teams.
