    Im sorry to hear you haven’t been well ❤️‍🩹 Man, I have no idea why I didn’t jump on Persephone’s Garden because I love Waterhouse and Pre-Raphaelites myself. Again, I know I already mentioned this, but I love your rune deck. Your cross-stitch is adorable!!! Love owls. 🦉 I’ve never attempted cross-stitch, I was always too afraid 😂 I’m so happy to hear you’ve enjoyed the new Doctor Who! I was so stoked to learn Russel T Davies was returning (and I heard Murray Gold returned as composer as well?) and then I didn’t watch it, I was too nervous! 😂 I love Jodi Whitaker but I didn’t watch any of the episodes during her run. I’ve watched and own a ton of the classic stories, we collect them, and then all of the reissued series up until season 10. I’ve only watched up through season 9, because I fell in love with Capaldi and wasn’t ready to watch him regenerate 😂 I also felt for me, the way the 9th season wrapped up was actually an ‘ending’ for me. It was just so beautiful. But I’m sure I’ll watch the rest eventually. And yes, Russel T Davies was the showrunner for the 9th Doctor as well. (Sorry for my Doctor Who tangent!)

      @@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I love a Doctor Who tangent. You listen to musicals right? Just asking because Jonathan Groff is in one of the episodes and his relationship with the Doctor is too adorable. I wish I liked 13 more than I did because I do like Jodie Whittaker, but somehow it just didn’t do it for me. I think it was the writing and the stories she got. But I’m already enjoying Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. It’s a totally different energy from Capaldi’s era but so much fun. A bit closer to Matt Smith, I think. And yes, Murray Gold is back-he’s made for scoring Doctor Who.

    • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission
      @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Před 3 dny

      We’ll have to have a good Doctor Who chat sometime! I’m such a geek for it! Yes, I do listen to musicals, and I did see a preview for that episode! My boyfriend pre-pandemic had quite a career with musical theatre so I was lucky to see countless broadway shows here in Boston. I agree, I don’t think it was Jodi’s fault at all, it was the writing. My take was that Chibnall’s aim was to revert back to the sci-fi/historical based stories from the 60s through the 80s, and while I love and collect those stories, the show had ‘evolved’. My mom really liked the seasons with 13, which is cute. I can see a lot of people enjoying it if they weren’t aware of the show beforehand. I’ve heard good things about Ncuti Gatwa as an actor although i don’t think I’ve seen him in anything. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll like him.

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před 3 dny

      @@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission that’s interesting. I hadn’t read up on Chibnall’s intentions for the show and I haven’t watched many of the classic episodes. Maybe I’ve just gotten too used to the reboot to appreciate them. I’d love to be closer to broadway. I’ve been there once and saw a couple of things but otherwise it’s cast recordings for me! I know occasionally touring shows come through Canada but I haven’t seen many.

    Great video as always. The Bones Fall in a Spiral … woah, looked into it and added it to my wish list. I read about a contemporary necromancer recently in ‘Witches of America’ and let’s say his practices were not ethical (if this dude was even telling the truth) so I’m curious to read this approach! I really need to get ‘Reading Lolita in Tehran’ I see it all the time in used book stores. Oh my GOSH Soul Cats! 🐈‍⬛ I’ve never seen this before ( I don’t think 🤔) Gathering Moss was one of the best things I’ve read this year, or ever, really, and you’re realllly making me want to read Ulysses again but WHY would I do that to myself right now with everything I’m trying to get through 😂😭😭😭

    • @NicoleACottageWitch

It’s actually paused at the moment while I catch up on some of the other things on my ridiculous TBR, but I’ll definitely get back to it. There are just too many things to read! Though as soon as I get Robin Wall Kimmerer’s next book, I’ll temporarily drop everything else! I don’t recall having any serious ethical concerns about The Bones Fall in a Spiral (just difference in preference but that’s fine).

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před 24 dny

      Moby Dick is probably my all time favourite. I’ve done several new operas like Everest and Filumena that are pretty cool. I like the music to Carmen but that and Butterfly kept trying to kill me whenever I stage managed them! Everything that could go wrong did! Mozart is pretty reliably fun though I don’t feel the need to do the Magic Flute again. It’s much less stressful just operating the surtitles. Oh and Dutchman was a lot of fun too.

    • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission
      @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Před 21 dnem

      All signs are pointing me to Moby Dick lately! 😂 honestly, I have to familiarize myself with the opera, that’s so interesting!! (I’ve been excited to read the book for a few years now and keep waiting for the perfect time, I think todays the day). Yeah … there’s some stupid librettos out there 😂 Love Butterfly, and Magic Flute and Dutchman are favorites too, saw productions of those here in Boston. It’s difficult choosing favorites, I also love the operas of Rossini, Donizetti, Monteverdi … my favorite from the ‘contemporary’ category would be the Philip Glass triptych: Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha and Akhenaten, (Akhenaten being my first choice because I listen to it constantly!)

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před 21 dnem

      @@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I should listen to some Philip Glass opera. I’ve only listened to his piano music and love it. I remember glancing at the surtitles during Lucia Di Lammermoor (also very good and based on the Walter Scott novel), and thinking “oh this is why it’s in Italian!” Some of the lyrics were so ridiculous in English! Oh and that reminds me, I also love the opera Manon by Massenet but I haven’t listened to it in a long time. And yes, the book Moby Dick is so beautiful! It is a bit meandering sometimes (I think he spends quite some time describing knots and types of whales and things like that), but it’s so beautiful I’ve read it twice.

I went through a period where I was seeing a deck review on CZcams, then immediately buying the deck if it was a reasonable price. But now I am doing more research, and deciding if a particular deck is needed in my collection for a particular type of work. If not, then it just goes on my wish list for another time. I’m curious about something… Do you typically plant vegetables and herbs in the same pot? Does that work well? Is there a rhyme or reason to how you pair varieties into one pot? At 6:58, I noticed a bunch of deep reddish/pinkish plants in your pots, but I don’t remember you mentioning what they were. Those are gorgeous! I love the idea of a native plant rescue. I have never been involved in that before. I will have to look into it in my area.

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před měsícem

      I do usually plant herbs and vegetables together. Usually some herbs like basil go with tomatoes because their roots don’t need as much space as the tomatoes and then chives go with strawberries to keep the bugs away but beyond that I haven’t gotten much into companion planting. Mostly it’s just a matter of necessity on a balcony! The reddish flowers were peony leaves from some grocery store flowers that now have a second life as mulch. Though I do have some purple oxalis out there, but it’s struggling. The plant rescue was a lot of fun and very interesting but also a bit sad because that land is about to get bulldozed.

      Thanks! It’s an incredible but bonkers show. I tried to explain it to my family once and they definitely think I’m nuts (I mean, they did before but they really do now!). It’s so much fun and has often pushed the boundaries of representation on TV, which I appreciate.

  • @rubyretrogradetarotthe5377

    The pink is unapologetically there you're right, and I like the range of pinks used. Alas this collage deck isn't my vibe and I don't know what it is that causes collage decks to not sway me (except for one). The guidebook seems well made with good info. In any case thank you for the flip through!

    Philosophy Bites Back sounds like fun, adding it to my list, you always have the best recommendations. The Jhumpa Lahiri books sound fascinating! The art of translation is one of my obsessions, and one of the reasons I’m so drawn to Nabokov (did you hear about the famous feud with Edmund Wilson over a translation of Eugene Onegin? Lol) I told my sister once, that I’d love to read Dylan Thomas translated in another language and then translated back into English again to see what we’d get!

      @@NicoleACottageWitch I love Annie Farrar’s Daydreaming in Situ. I bought the Marea this morning 😱 I wasn’t going to, but I was worried I would miss out and regret it. A beautiful deck and I love the emotions in the minors and courts. I love Thoth minors ♥️ thank you for showing it!

    It’s funny you mention Goth Lit November because I have been planning for it myself 😂 I had a bit of carryover from last year, so I definitely plan on doing it again! On the Epic of Gilgamesh: Have you ever heard of ‘The Forest’ by David Byrne (of the Talking Heads)? It’s music he wrote inspired by Gilgamesh and it’s set during the Industrial Revolution. How cool is that? I was planning on talking about it in an upcoming video actually. It’s soooo beautiful, and I know you like orchestral stuff too 😊 one of my favorite albums!

      Ok, I’m back quickly to say I just started it and, for reasons I can’t explain, it reminds me immediately of Holst’s the Planets, so I’ll probably like it. I really need to learn to talk about music in even a slightly coherent way!

      @@NicoleACottageWitch oh good, I’m glad you think you’re going to like it! I love David Byrne and everything he did with The Talking Heads … genius. And don’t worry; you’re fine! I feel inept myself sometimes because my partner is a professional musician and we talk about music a lot, but I’m familiar with some terms pertaining to classical music that he isn’t, and he doesn’t understand how it is I’ve read some of the books I’ve read (by Charles Rosen etc) because he wouldn’t be able to get through them lol

  • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission

    I had similar thoughts on Master and Margarita: I did really enjoy it, but I’ve read a bunch of Russian lit and I didn’t consider it the best of the best as the Russian who recommended it to me did (we are not friends anymore, but it’s not Bulgakov’s fault) 😂 love Chekhov but I haven’t read The Black Monk! Sounds like I need to get my hands on a copy. I think I remember reading that Oroonoko was based on a true story but I’m not sure. It’s weird I haven’t read Madame Bovary, but there’s so many books to read 😫 I read a bunch of Gertrude Stein a few years ago and I find her fascinating. I’m going to look up Blind Owl! 🦉

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před 2 měsíci

      So many books to read! And I want to read them all! It’s an ongoing problem. I definitely need to read more Chekhov. I read some of his plays ages ago for my undergrad but I’ve been sleeping on his shorting fiction. I’d say Stein is up next but I’m also reading about 7 books right now and really need to finish at least one of them first!

    • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission
      @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Před 2 měsíci

      @@NicoleACottageWitch it’s a definite problem for me too. I was reading 7 or 8 books recently myself … finished a couple recently so I’m making progress but yeah lol I read Chekhov plays for a theatre history course years ago and that’s how I discovered him, LOVED those courses. I forgot to mention: I think it’s cool you read the books which inspired operas. I haven’t read many actually; Eugene Onegin by Pushkin is the only one I can recall at the moment, but I read the librettos which accompany the operas I own. I love opera! 🥰

  • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission

    Omg I want to read everything all at once. Remembrance of Things Past/In Search of Lost Time has been on my TBR for years… I bought a copy of Swann’s Way like … 10 years ago? Lol Thank you for the podcast recommendation; I don’t listen to those often but this sounds like a lot of fun. Much of Ulysses has stuck with me, and I read it maybe 6 years ago? Henry James is such an interesting person to me. I can’t say he’s my favorite either, but I’ve only read Wings of the Dove and some other short stories including Turn of the Screw, which I loved because it actually scared me, and I wasn’t expecting that. I think what makes it so scary is the fact it’s so elusive. I really want to read Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, I bought a copy after reading Death in Venice. Ok I’m still watching …. 😊

  • @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission

    Really enjoying these videos. I always learn something new. I want to learn more about Iraq and Iran too. I added Stolen Harvest to my list … well, we’ll start there lol and yes: the Greeks are heavily sited in classic lit and that’s been one of the motivations for me too, when it comes to reading the works of the old, old blokes 😊

    • @NicoleACottageWitch
      @NicoleACottageWitch Před 2 měsíci

      I’ve been reading a lot of the old blokes lately! Mostly because I’m studying Ulysses which references tonnes of them and it’s fun to get to know some of the connections-which writers inspired other writers, things like that.

      @SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Před 2 měsíci

      Oh yeah, there’s a lot of referencing in Ulysses for sure! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it.

    Holy cow, you read so many books! I’m jealous! I have to watch this again and jot some titles down. I’m tempted to read the David Fromkin book again, because I read it ages ago. I’m excited for The Little Red Chairs. I think I need to read Dreams of Being Eaten Alive because woah … the Zambian space program? I’m so intrigued, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that. Also, chocolate mint sounds heavenly! I love mint in general, but struggle to make it thrive for longer periods of time.

      I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks lately. And I may have gotten more Edna O’Brien this month! I’ll start the Country Girls soon.
