I think even more obvious than harmonies is that zappa wrote these angular melodies and then would have it doubled on many instruments.

Another major detail about this piece is just how *fast* it's played as recorded. I mean absolute light speed and tight tight tight. Takes a huge amount of work to get a band that tight at that speed.

Ruth, I saw you 1974-ish at Ithaca College. Frank was sick, coming down with a bad cold or the flu. During one song Frank let it be known that you attended IC. Then he gave you LOTS of playtime. Midway through one of your solos everything stopped (very Zappalike) and he said I'll bet Ruth is thinking "I wonder what would have happened if I'd graduated from here." You were great FZ was great despite being sick. His next album, One Size Fits All, featured Inca Roads and Pojama People. I can't help but wonder if those songs were created while he was on the couch recovering from the flu. Why do I remember a show from almost 50 years ago?!

30 years without playing and she played like that. I wouldn't be surprised if she had prepared a little for this or warmed up beforehand but whether she did or not, that is incredible. I've played guitar for over 30 years. I was really, really good. I'm still pretty good but I stopped playing obsessively like I had most of my life about 3 years ago to focus on composing and I'm so terribly rusty when I play now that it practically makes me depressed. She's like not entirely human. Percussion is part of her DNA.

Ohhh my dear lady... How I dreamed of covering Inca Roads with our upstart tribute to progressive rock band some time back. Your contribution on this instrument alone made this an impossible goal..! My hats off to you. Brilliant addition to his band and that fantastic SONG.! I always liked Franks music and his comical approach to lyrics and to his performances on stage..! But I did not realize the true depth of his genius until later when I began trying to work his songs out with some other very talented musicians.! We could get through he Gentle Giant and the YES and the early Genesis.. But Franks work was a real effort..!

I think I might have thought you were saying this is "THE secret of the Zappa sound", when what you were really saying is "this is A secret of the Zappa sound". In other words, this is one element of his sound. And, perhaps, a very important element. And I think that's what Ruth Underwood was saying also. Thanks for posting this. And Ruth, thanks for your wonderful contribution to Zappa's music. And your own music.
