I'm intrigued by this as a potential career choice, but in Canada it seems near impossible to gain any actual knowledge or experience with the most popular estimating softwares, unless you already have a job in the field somehow. Ofcourse to get a job in the field almost all places are looking for 1-2yrs experience with say mitchell and audatex; so it's an endless loop that can't really be broken into. This was all learned from me speaking with employers hiring for this position, as well as calling corporations like Audatex, Mitchell, and others to see if there was any way a member of the public could take any sort of course to gain the knowledge and/or experience that employers are looking for. It's definitely a frustrating field to break into.

Tow Truck Drivers: Please make Sure that your tow trucks and flatbeds meet the Law with at least 2 Red Reflectors placed on the rear of your trucks! With the advent of all this LED Lighting, many tow trucks have very expensive lighting systems, but they fail to meet laws regarding proper placement of a minimum of two red reflex reflectors on rear of the vehicle... the lower the placement, the better. The issue is two fold: 1. What if the tow truck's electrical system fails - the reflectors help drivers see the vehicle before it is too late... 2. If there is an accident and the insurance companies get involved (read: lawyers) they will look for every angle to find a loophole to get out of paying... Don't let the lack of under $10 worth of stick on reflectors give them an out. Want to verify that the reflectors are reflex reflectors? Take a picture at night with a cell phone camera - the reflective surfaces, aka the rear license plate and any reflectors will be bright blotches on the pictures due to the flash. LED Flashlights from a distance also produce light that bounces back from reflectors. Experiment with the factory equipment on a passenger car and you will see what I mean with the LED or Cell Camera Flash
