The days of muddy football pitches like glue, thick woollen socks and old-fashioned 'casey' footballs containing the 'bladder' inside and laced up the side. Don't forget, too, that 'soccer' is still a relatively minor sport in countries like the USA - compared to its own brand of 'padded' football played with an oval ball, basketball, ice hockey, baseball and the like. A 'National Treasure' and hugely popular in the global game; although if you know your football - his career was almost certainly influenced by that other 'great' of world football - Alfredo di Stefano - who was playing as a deep-lying midfielder- centre forward Number 9 for Argentina and, in particular, Real Madrid in the 1950s - long before the role was well-known as of today; although the latter was also probably influenced by Nandor Hidekguti of the great Hungarian team of the early 1950s. Interestingly enough, they were the first team to beat England on home soil in 1953 at the old Wembley Stadium (6 - 3). Hidekguti scored a hat-trick of three goals that day - probably because the England defence didn't know how to mark him. Nowadays, in 2024, such players are known as 'false' 9's - which really just shows that there is often really new and innovative in sport - and probably life in general. It just really re-invents itself in different ways.

It's not just about club trophies my guy you have to bring in other stats to get a fair comparison. Maradona was surrounded by average players but also going against average players; Messi was world class going against other world class players like Cristiano; and he was usually the difference between winning and losing. But according to unbiased stats Messi is a little bit better than Maradona was, respect to both though

Messi won Laliga with below average players around him and has played against better players, note that as football today is more advanced and players are more fit compared to Maradona's time due to better training facilities, strategies and more people to take care of players well beings. Also carried an average Argentina side to copa america 2019, WC2022 and now copa america 2024. Messi also has better stats than Maradona and the longevity. Messi > Maradona.

It is a tough one I have to say as they are both incredible players but my opinion still stands that Maradona was the better player, like I said he pretty much done it on his own at Napoli, Messi had World class players around him at Barcelona. So Maradona still edges it for me IMO
