First Few Tricks on My 1988 GT Pro Freestyle Tour!

An old riding buddy got ahold of me recently and reunited me with 2 of my bikes from when we were kids. This was my main bike through my high school years until I stopped riding in 1991 when I went away to college. I left this, and a 1988 Diamond Back Strike Zone Woody Itson, with a friend in 1992 when my dad moved out of state, and I wanted to keep the 2 bikes local instead of out of state or ...

And last, but not least, here's track 12, Where the River Goes, from @stptv 's first album, Core. Really satisfying on so many levels to have finally learned this entire album. I can't count how many times I've said, "I should learn that song." when I heard a bunch of these tracks. ✔️ Big credit to @deck16andahalf for posting enhanced bass tracks! Another 10/10 without landing a double decade. Gotta work on them more than just once a year. 😂 Today felt like a bit of a waste tho. Adulting got in the way and I couldn't get out until dusk, and because l shoulda cleaned my brakes before I came out. Brakes kept slipping so I was struggling to hit singles. I landed 2 singles for extra credit tho.✌️

Sick lineup!
Thanks! It just kinda happened. 😁
Saaas 🔥🔥
Thanks! 👍
First! Sick lineup. It's wild you were able to reconnect with your old GT and DB. DO you have the Tioga Compact disc sprocket that came with the Strike zone?
@@kidwilson3357 Thanks! Yeah, still stoked to get 2 of my bikes from back in the day. It's finally starting to set in that it actually happened. 😁 I don't, but I picked up a couple of Tioga Compact Discs on eBay and I'm sending them to Mark Drowne to polish them. I'm prob gonna swap the Redline sprocket for a Compact Disc. 👍
Interesting and informative, thanks for the content!
Sure! 👍
Wowww
Thanks! 🤝
You are a legend on the wheels! 💯💯
Thanks! I'll take it, but there are way better riders than me. 😁
Have any tips on how to get started with tricks like these? I have a downtown Haro and would like to try and do something like the footjam tailwhip
Cool. That's a pretty decent bike. I thought about one when I was thinking of getting back into bikes in 2020. Here's a how to on tailwhips. I like kicking off the pedal instead of the back peg tho. There are plenty of how to vids on old and modern tricks. czcams.com/video/odbny6Dd92E/video.htmlsi=NVWL6pBTzK0NgUGw
So awesome Chris!!
Thanks! So killer to have this bike back. 👍
Awesome! 👍 This is literally your own bike from 1988?
It is! As crazy as it sounds. This was my main bike through my high school years until I stopped riding in 1991 when I went away to college. I left a couple of bikes with a friend in 1992 when my dad moved out of state, so I wanted to keep the 2 bikes local instead of out of state or in storage. I figured I'd pick them up maybe months or a year later at the most, but I wound up never picking them up, and a lifetime later, my friend found me online and we met to catch up and get the bikes back to me earlier this month. 😁
@@ChrisWong13 Wow, that guy is golden! Glad he did the right thing, and glad you have your rides back! 👍
@@AmazingChinaToday Absolutely! 💪
Awesome vid, what brake pads are you using? I appreciate thanks
Thanks! I use Odyssey Ghost clear brake pads. No angle adjustment, just bolt them on and go, and they're pretty grippy. 👍
@@ChrisWong13 thanks Chris! 🤘🏽
that was fireeeeeeeeeeee
Thanks, man! 🤝
Great days. Still have my Haro Sport, GT performer and mongoose California. I’m 52 now👍🏻
Awesome! I actually just got back my 1988 GT Pro Freestyle Tour and 1988 Diamond Back Strike Zone Woody Itson that I left with a friend back in 1992 when I went away to college. Gonna get them back into riding shape and post some vids.👍
Is there a tab for naked Sunday
I didn't actually find bass tabs, but it's not that involved as far as what notes are played. What I hear is mostly riding C with some slides, and a quick chromatic climb from E to B flat to B to C, and a couple sections of B flat to C, like under the guitar solo. It's a short song, but it's more about remembering the patterns for the slides and the overall arrangement. It's a tough one for me since I never really played thrash, and it's using some of the same galloping technique on the right hand. Don't think I'm that locked in with the rhythm, but it's not a completely terrible take. 😁
@@ChrisWong13 thanks
incredible bike
Thanks! Still rides well for freestyle even 30+ years later. 👍
Nice. I still have my Pro Tour. Blue/white mags, fold down pegs...all original except for the white GT tires.. Got it new for my b-day in 1988.. Still ride it around the city all then time. It's the perfect casual freestyle bike.
Awesome! I wish I had my OG bikes from back when…
Yeaaa nice oldschool drive i love it❤😊big hand from germany
Thanks! 🤝
Sounds good Chris. Some riding sprinkled into the edit would be cool too.
Thanks! Interesting, haven't thought of mixing the two. And I wasn't sure if I should post these vids on this channel or start a new one. 🤔
Man of multiple talents I see
Yeah, I've prob had too many hobbies in my life. Bikes in the 80s, then bass in the 90s. 😄
I just bought one at pawn for $200. I'm 58. I'm going to get so hurt this spring.
Congrats on the new bike! I just turned 50 myself. 😁
I just bought one at pawn for $200. I'm 58yo and gonna destroy myself on it. Can't wait.

I just bought one of these used for a couple hundred. Old man looking forward to having pedals under my feet again.

Hi Chris how to I make mine “gears” into a cruiser any tips for long rides?
This bike comes with 28/9 gearing. I had 25/9 on another bike and I think I liked that a little better since it was a little easier to crank. The big bikes from GT come with 33/16 or 36/16 gearing. I haven't ridden a big bike, so I'm not sure how the gearing feels. 36/16 on a 20 inch bike would be pretty soft, but with 26 or 29 inch wheels, I'm guessing it probably feels similar to 25 or 28/9. If you have one of these bikes, I'd say to try 25/9 gearing to make it a little easier to crank. Here's a GT Power Disk 36T sprocket. These are available in white or black: www.porkchopbmx.com/gt-110mm-bcd-bmx-bicycle-power-disc-silve-46157631.html If you want to switch to 36T, you'll likely want to switch the wheels or rear hub to a 13T or 16T.
Awesome.
Thanks. This park is closed forever at this point. 🥲
Hi, I have the same BMX nice one! quick question: I wanted to install a Gyro but it wont fit over the headset. which one do you have? and would it be possible to send me a picture or quick vid with a close up of the Gyro and headset placement? very much appreciated! thanks! greets
I had the Odyssey GTX-S gyro on this bike. It came with a smaller headset cap that had the proper clearance for the gyro. Apparently, the Odyssey GTX-S is the only one or two gyros that require a smaller headset cap. Other brands don't need it.
I would say it’s about as close as fu*k is to swearing 😜
Ha! 😆
i just put mine together after having it sitting in my basement over a year in the box.. initial impressions were - it's cheap. paint is super thin and fragile. tires/tubes are big and heavy. the spokes are flexy. the cable stays for the rear brake that thread into each side of the headset were both loose and required removal of the cables to access the screws behind them in order to red loctite them back into the frame. the brake levers are generic/no name. cheap plastic GT pedals. the sticker on the seat post was way off center. the only things really worth a damn on this bike are the hubs and the cranks.. overall, it is made in china and you need to expect the quality control isn't going to be where it was back in the 80s when these were made in japan or something made in USA. this isn't worth $950 guys.
I hear ya. I also have the white 2021 model, and the welds are kinda messy in some areas. But I use it as my main flatland bike, and I have taken it to skateparks and it's a good all around bike. The geometry is similar to a lot of modern park bikes. I got the white 2021 for $675 in mid 2020. This black 2022 had a crooked rear end, so I ended up returning it. I got another black 2022 that I recently bought from a friend and it's straight. I think Haro has their reissue bikes made overseas too, but the quality is noticeably way better, the welds on Haro Lineage bikes are immaculate. It's prob down to which factory is making the bikes or quality control and how much you push them to do a better job. Just due to the economics, we probably won't ever get American made GT or Haro bikes again. I also paid $950 for the black 2022, and even at $950, they're still cheaper than the Haro Lineage bikes at $1,649. I swapped out the stock brakes with Dia Compe brakes and levers, I didn't really like Odyssey brakes back in the day, so I didn't really want to use them even now. The GT pedals are the same ones that come on their modern street/park bikes, so they get abused with grinds, etc. They're cheap at $20 to $30 a pair, so they're prob meant to be abused and replaced frequently. You prob wanna give any bike a good once over to check for anything loose anyways. Who knows what the factory mechanic is doing? They might be good mechanics, but just behind schedule and are cutting corners to get the bikes put together and in the box. I think wheels are built using machines nowadays, so you also wanna check them for straightness and spoke tension.
@ChrisWong13 I'd mentioned in another post that my black was on backorder from ALBES, but eventually came.. it had various scuffs/scrapes/scratches from shipping that i had to sharpie out.. i applied the rear brake out of the box and the cable stays that thread into the headset literally fell off! the black is on GTs website now for $650, but it's backordered (probably indefinitely).. I've also noticed variations in some videos on the pot's mod front brake stem hole - some large opening, some just sized for the cable and also the front dropouts have the hardware hole for the locating washer and some dont.. I'm definitely disappointed in the quality and realize we're just paying for nostalgia Chris..
@@kitvexed8229 Sorry to hear. I think Able's opens the boxes before they ship them out to customers to make sure the packing and foam is situated. Sux that your bike came with nicks and scratches. About the variations, not sure if those are just customizations? The bikes I've seen that I know are stock all come with the large opening that you use a square socket connector to tighten the compression bolt. Both of my bikes came with the safety washers on the front wheel, but I don't use them with pegs, I just put the pegs directly against the dropouts.
@ChrisWong13 i know ALBES opens them, as there was an ALBES sticker inside the box. IF albes has anything to do with checking or assembly, they did a piss poor job with mine as everything was loose (or falling off) and had to be gone through. I do the same and mount the pegs directly to dropouts, as they should be. there was a guide to follow as far as setting up the cable tension for the detangler using nickels and dimes as shims that either ALBES or China did not follow so i had to go completely through adjusting the brakes as well.. i can't imagine a child or lesser inclined person having to do this - it should've been set up straight out the box! btw, you're getting better Chris!
@@kitvexed8229 When you're right, you're right. Thanks!
Nope...that's called a bar endo.
Someone suggested calling this a Daytona Hopper since it doesn't go all the way down to Miami. 😅
@@ChrisWong13 Already been named a bar endo in the 80s.
Although that was amazing, two things stop the title: chinese knockoff gt, and the peg. Gary Turner has a new company called Gary Turner lol. Get one of those! I have a Gary Turner myself
Yeah, I hear ya. I’m aware that Gary is making bikes again, with his son. Love it! Unfortunately, I can’t imagine we’ll get American made GT Pro Performers or Pro Freestyle Tours again. I have an OG 1987 GT Pro Freestyle Tour, but I wouldn't make it my daily rider nowadays due to its age. Someone suggested calling this a Daytona Hopper since it doesn't go all the way down to Miami. 😅
I had the same bike back in 87. My PitBull brakes didn't sqeak like that though!!!!!

Where can you buy those?
I bought this from Albe's. www.albes.com/collections/gt-bmx-bikes/products/gt-bikes-pro-performer-bike-2022
These are pretty hard to find at this point. You can try other shops: Dan's Comp, Planet BMX, J&R Bicycles. They may not be released again this year as the new models may be coming out.
GT also has a buy one, get one free deal on their web site. gtbicycles.com/collections/freestyle-bmx-bikes
Thanks man. I appreciate it a lot. @@ChrisWong13I used ot race for haro and i had GT Freestyles from the 80's-90's as well as worked for a Bike shop 13-18. For me that counts as a Miami Hopper, your balancing is awesome
Thanks! Another vote for yes. Most people seem to agree. 👍
Awesome riding and bike! Can I ask what pegs you are running? I am trying to find some bolt on ones that fit the fork dropouts on an 88 PFT.
Thanks! In this video, I have these pegs: www.albes.com/products/steel-thread-on-freestyle-bmx-pegs?_pos=3&_sid=8313c4bcd&_ss=r , but I've since found some GT steel pegs from the late 80s or early 90s on eBay.

I would rather have the new style bike instead of an original I just wouldn’t have the heart to go ride and mess up an original bike
I hear ya. I feel the same. 👍
That's how I did them even with fold ups. I didn't want to trash my grips. I say yup that's a hopper.
Cool. Another vote for yes. 👍 I used coins as bar ends back in the day, so grips weren’t a big problem. 😁
That was the exact color scheme that I wanted so bad as a kid. Photo spread of Martin Aparijo in Sydney Australia I think in BMX Plus on that one
Yeah, just a classic color for this bike. I had a white one, and then a black one as a kid. Still wanted a pink one even though black was pretty badass. Glad to get my hands on one again. 👍
This always gets me 😂 👍
Yeah, it's always ridiculous riding around in this Stormtrooper costume. 🤣
That decade was so flawless and clean
Thanks, but I couldn't find the pedal cleanly after landing it. Was feeling around for a second... 😜
💪
Thanks! 👍
Great riding Chris….
Thanks! I should take this bike out more often. 😁
Close enough! Had the fold up stands so that made a difference back in the day.
Yeah, I thought about taking the right peg off, or even running an old school folding stander, but that would ruin the fork. I might just run a shorter peg on the right side. 👍
Awesome either way Chris! You have singles locked in good, keep practicing maybe by this time next year you can post the double and scratch that one off the list! Stay Rad!
Thanks! I think if I put the time in, I can land one at least. Not sure if I can get them to be a regular trick tho.
What do you mean "Failed"? I disctinctly saw two decades. DOUBLE DECADE ACHIEVED!
Thanks for the big up, but there are no shortcuts to radness. 😁 If I put the time in, I should be able to land a real double decade. If I get it on video, I may never have to do one again. 🤣
Yes .....nice.😉 Big hand from germany
Thanks again! 🤝
Clean!
Thanks! Not a double, but I will work on them. Better late than never. 😁
Great to see you at your 1st show….so rad…
Yeah, it was a great experience. Way overdue, kinda regretting not going to contests in the 80s and 90s. 🤔
Chris way rad brother….can you do a video of how you set your cameras up and the equipment you’re using for your flatland edits? Cheers brother
Thanks. I can prob do a video on what I use. It's just a GoPro and I use Adobe Premiere Rush for video editing, but I could probably use any video editor, like the Microsoft Clipchamp that's included with Windows nowadays. I don't do anything fancy like an intro or logos or music, etc., I pretty much just cut clips and use transitions between them. 😁
That’s cool. I tried this never landed it as far as I remember. Keep up the good riding
Thanks! I still can't do them the same way as a kid, but it's close. You keep shredding too, on both bikes and skateboards even. 😁💪
Dude I love this edit style! Do more like this :D
Thanks! I'll try to do more POV and bike mounted clips. 👍
