Abstract sketchbooks tour and artist printmaker festival haul
#abstractart #sketchbooktour #collage
I visited the printmakers festival in Stirling university. I bought some cards and got some lovely paper.
I’ve been working away in the sketchbooks too, adding layers, patterns, collage and mixed media generally.
I spent a lot of time exploring shape and line.
I show the printmakers programme with all the artists listed with their contact details.
I hope you enjoy.

Abstract art sketchbooks tour using mixed media
zhlĂ©dnutĂ 2KPƙed 14 dny
#abstractart #mixedmedia #sketchbook I’ve been doing a lot of work in sketchbooks over the last few weeks. I’ve applied to do a BFA (starting with HNC) at art school. I will need sketchbooks if I get an interview. I’ve used a lot of mixed media, collage, oil pastels, acrylic paint, kids paint, pencil, charcoal and more. This is a chat about what I’ve done, and the benefits of using a sketchbook...

    Hi! Top tip for your ring bound portfolios. I studied textiles and pages would be painted and samples added in Remove the spiral from the book, it’s easy with some needle nose pliers. Buy an A2/3 portfolio case to keep your loose pages in. When you’ve completed your project theme. You can either feed pages back onto the wire spiral or you can use fabric, twine, wool etc to “sew” the pages back together. left over pages can make another portfolio too! Removing all the pages means you can work all the way to the edge and the ring binder holes don’t rip from constant turning, they can also be strengthened with extra paper, layer of pva or modge podge. I used tissue paper I’d stamped on to add extra decoration to the page. Each A3 page would be split into nine sections to show samples. Use a rectangle frame to select the best part of your sample pieces. Add notes to talk about your inspiration source and how you’re developing your ideas while combining the sources e.g Charles RM and Africa. Work towards a final piece. In your case a piece of art. For each portfolio I worked on, I was given a single word such as reflection. You could interpret this anyway you liked. It’s tricky to start, I’d draw a mind map with a word in the centre. We would draw ideas from inspiration such as the sixties, (period) Charles rennie MacKintosh (artist) and African tribes (culture). These were my personal sources for one project. You could also use nature, flowers but look at them with different perspective, macro details, just the marks on petals etc. If you can combine all sources of inspiration together in a book you’ve got endless designs to try in all kinds of media. Collage, print, felt making, batik, screen printing, fabric distortion on voiles and draw on faux velvet with heated nib. The BEST thing is you can work on several pages at a time, you don’t need to wait for them to dry. I hope this helps. I’d also recommend photographing , scanning, or colour photocopy the pages. I had a six month portfolio go missing from my tutors office. I wanted to leave from sheer anger, it was a very big test! I’m glad I stayed. I’ve made a career from it! Good luck with your college interview, you’ll smash it. Just take one large book or 2 smaller ones with your best work and notes. P.s, you can tie labels to the ring binder or sewn binder with extra samples and notes about the pages of developing your idea.

    I absolutely adore this! It reminds me of the first time I had art class and we used coloured crayons to colour a sheet of paper then covered it with black paint. When it was dry we used lolly sticks to scratch off the paint to create a picture. The effect with the gel plate looks like a Lino print
. How weird, as I typed about Lino, you said it! It would be nice to duplicate the design on Lino. It looks beautiful. Your art style is very similar to mine. 😊

Less raggedy though. I’ve recently done some paper pulp making on top of linocuts. Unfortunately it dried more like an egg carton
more blending and water needed. I love colourful big rough art, I’m currently obsessing over Amy sillman. 😁😁😁😁

      Hi carol, apologies for the late reply. I set time aside to reply properly
I’m not a fan of quick generic replies. I have applied, I got into one college and have an interview for a second one tomorrow
so your hat is safe!!!! This was really lovely to read, a confidence booster!! It feels weird to be taking in sketchbooks instead of finished paintings to be judged on
. But at the same time it makes sense, like showing your working in maths!!!!

    The Great Hairy Willow Herb! I rewatched that video yesterday because I've recently gotten a set of alcohol inks. Thanks for this flip through, it's cool seeing the scope of your works and the one at 20:09 (the right-side page) caught my eye. I reckon it's a bit tough waiting for the art school decision and I'm hoping they see the same spark of curious creativity that we see. My fingers and toes are crossed!

      Has there ever been a better name apple (apart from apple of course!)😂 I’ve gotten into one of the colleges I applied to!!!! The other one is my preferred one as it gets you into second year of Glasgow art school. It will be a big change in lifestyle for me, gonna have to brush my hair đŸ˜±đŸ˜‚ I’ll keep doing CZcams though, share stuff that I’m learning. Maybe in a style like this video as it’s a lot less work.

    I am constantly amazed by the breadth of your design work. I enjoyed and learned from every page of these sketchbooks. Two pages in your yellow book, “the tidy one”, that speak to me personally are the black abstract on brown paper (gel print, one pull) and the drawing of a “tractor or something” done at The National Museum of Rural Life. Thank you for this inspiring and very valuable tour through your art.

    This is terrific. I see all kinds of potential for drawing. Thank you for showing this. I’m certainly going to try it on a smaller plate to begin with. I know some people add extenders and retarders to their acrylic paint. Sometimes my paint dries so fast that once I get the paper on it, it doesn’t pick up well. It’s very hot Here and I have had to turn off the ceiling fan to slow down my paint drying.

    • @quirkyqueens
      @quirkyqueens Pƙed 16 dny

      Hi Vivian, I’m way behind due to my parents house situation. Have you tried water mixable oils in the gel plate? I’ve tried a couple of times. Obviously quite limited as you have to use an oil friendly paper if you want to keep it. But for experimenting, may be useful. I’ve only recently started painting with them, but I love they stay wet for like a day or more. I have mediums but sometimes I get a bit lazy using them
I don’t know why đŸ«ŁđŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïžđŸ˜‚

    • @quirkyqueens
      @quirkyqueens Pƙed 16 dny

      Or block printing ink. I might try that later
. I struggle with the stiffness of it but I might put some medium in to see what it does (even if it’s not compatible, just for experimenting).
