Has anyone 4k-upscaled both of these Harrison Dune tv miniseries yet? The Lynch version has already been upscaled to 4k (Spicediver, etc) & the Villeneuve was already filmed/mastered at the same/near resolution. I'm sure the next Dune visual adaptation a couple decades from now will be at a much higher resolution, perhaps more than 10k or so by then. 05/02/24

I guess I’m going against the grain judging by these comments but I think the Villeneuve version is much closer to how I imagined him in the book. Grotesquely fat, wheezing and unable to stand. Every second the baron is on screen in the new movies you get a feeling of unease at how almost inhuman his wealth and gluttony have made him. Here he just feels like a regular fat guy we see on a daily basis here in the states

I still don't see how the Emperor can be seen having his will frustrated (even if he is actually behind it all). He orders someone to take over a planet (it is such an important matter that the underling can't turn the probable trap down). Yet, a third party strikes, takes it over, kills the Emperor's representative and everyone goes ahead as if nothing had happened. You can't do it to the mayor of Milwaukee, how can you do it to the Emperor of the Known Universe?

I did really like the miniseries and thought all the actors did an excellent job. My favorite was the most recent adaptation as I think it felt the truest to Frank’s vision. I hated the 84 version at first but with lots more knowledge of the universe and many more Quinn’s ideas videos, I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more.

This miniseries was straight dorky garbage. The Children of Dune sequel was a little better, but still very cheesey. Stale cheese.

I enjoy all of the Dune movies, each has its own style and flavor. I always liked this one a bit better than the 84 version because they actually attempted to draw out the story as much as possible, which something I have appreciated. Though the 84 one had a certain style with their architectural choices and music that made it stand out. Was this version campy? Sure, but that was part of its charm. It was like a bunch of actors got to together and said 'sure, why not?' With that said, the new movies (2024ish) were pretty good adaptations, even though the decision to change the gender of a character or two still remains an odd choice, that and Aria not being born before the finale of the 2nd movie for me sort of disrupted the flow of the story at the end. Not to mention it sort of created a plot hole for any potential sequels regarding Aria and her mental issues she would have to contend with. All in all the new ones captured the overal theme that Brian wrote about, that we should always be aware of popular leaders.

I think the issue though is when you try to directly adapt it and “keep it exaclty like the book” it doesn’t come out on screen very well. I think the way to make dune work on screen one must do a degree of adapting for the right medium.

Even though this series had the budget of a tank of gas and a ham sandwich Ian McNeice is the only actor so far to NAIL what the Baron is supposed to be like. Cruel, cunning, smart, but physically weak and dependent. Despite being fat and floating around he still manages to be intimidating. And gay. Great acting in a very cheap series.

McMillan's Baron: A disgusting and depraved sociopathic perverted cult leader comorbidly suffering from a bipolar disorder. McNiece's Baron: An astute sleazebag politician who's more charming, disarming, and urbane, a classic narcissist. Skarsgård's Baron: A high functioning psychopathic warlord, seeing everybody else as objects to be used then discarded, and a lurking crooner.

Despite the new Dune remake, this miniseries is still my favorite. Especially since the remake went “woke” and insisted on completely reimagining Dr. Kynes as black and female. So much for Kynes being Chani’s FATHER! 🙄

Ian Mcniece really played a superb Baron. He came at it like he was performing Shakespeare. And it worked.

I’ve read all the Frank Herbert books, and all of his sons, and Brian j Anderson’s, this is the best adaptation of the harkonnens
