    Two stories: I work for a company (refrigeration mostly, but also HVAC) that constantly deals with this recurring issue of condensing units tripping on high head pressures every summer. This has been getting worse with each subsequent heat wave, to the point where the company started subcontracting a third-party condenser cleaning guy because it was getting to be too much for the limited number of technicians we have. So, I was on a service call a couple years ago where the condenser was clearly plugged, and it happened to be that the condenser cleaning guy was also going to stop by while I was onsite. I decided to test this out and hooked up my gauges to see what the before and after pressures would look like. The guy set up his pressure washer and started spraying water at the condenser in skillful fashion, and I made sure to notice he wasn’t bending any of the fins. As expected, when I started up the condensing unit, the pressures had dropped and we were happy with the results. What I did not expect, however, was that 10 minutes after he had packed up and left, the pressures rose back to where they were previously after the condenser had some time for the water to dry out. I was still new to the company at this point, so I just let it pass, and set up a sprinkler to water the condensers, as we normally do, to keep those head pressures down throughout the summer. Second story: Just last week, I had a fellow technician show me his method of cleaning condensers, knowing he’s had quite a bit of success with his calls. What did he do? He removed the fan, and used compressed nitrogen and a small fitting to spray a focused stream of nitrogen at the condenser from the inside-out. This pushed out A LOT of dense fluff that had been packed in between the fins from years of washing out the condenser with water. Granted, this was a messier and dustier procedure, but the head pressure came down and stayed down (no drying time in this scenario, obviously, because no water was involved). By the way, this technician is young. He has been in trade for only about 6 years, but I was willing to learn from him. Just because someone touts that he’s been doing the same thing for decades doesn’t mean it is the best and only way. I think the point of the video is to give an option to homeowners who like to take matters into their own hands. I get it. I see the sentiment in the comments that no one likes to break the bank to have a technician come and do what you could have done yourself. But I wanted to share my experiences in hopes that those who call themselves experts in this field can learn also a few things, so that homeowners can find better value in paying for good quality service than in looking for the next clever hack floating around on the internet.

  • @flowmasterrecords5691

    First off cut the disconnect then wash at not so high pressure and especially sideways always rinse up and down it will for sure bend the coil fins resulting in airflow restriction if theres alot of build up then use the viper solution and if you want to clean it professionally it is essential to remove the fan to rinse any wet thick dirt and vacuum any leaves with a wet vac i learned all that in trade school and working in the residential and commercial field here in South Texas were always doing coil cleansing especially on the rooftop units of inns/suites commercial businesses and of course your local residences so props for making this video but its slightly incorrect man but if you want a full condenser coil cleaning that's the way to do much love bud and yes my channel is flowmaster records i also own and run a record label on my spare time was signed to warner music group in my prime when i was around 19 im 31 now but HVAC-R is my preferred profession if you need tips on how to do it properly im sure there are youtube videos on it but as a universal certified technician that's the proper way to do it. It will take a little time to disassemble the fan all you have to do is just unscrew the fan panel and gently lift it to hang on the side to not mess up the fan motor wiring but other than that its easy as 123 hope this helps you in the future

    If you found this video and you want to avoid this, it's super easy. Oil cooler, 180 thermostat. Thats it. And if you have a pre-eagle 5.7, get eagle heads put on it. You will never have a premature lifter failure. It's a lot more rare than people like to think. Also they will sound similar to this on cold start due to header-head leaks. Very often, the header studs stretch or crack on these engine which will make this noise. Typically, once it warms up, it will go away if it is the exhaust making the noise

    A warning here from an actual incident. 2 or 3 months ago I pulled the disconnect and washed my ac unit out. Last week it stopped running and I pulled the top and investigated. (I have a degree in electronic engineering and 40 years experience troubleshooting electronic/mechanical equipment.) I found the source of the problem, the wiring to the compressor motor passed through a hole in the sheetmetal between the control circuitry and the compressor. This hole didn't have any bushing in it (like that from the factory), and the wire had been vibrating against the edge of the metal until it rubbed the insulation off. The wire was shorting to the metal frame of the unit and from the looks of the burnt out metal for quite some time. If I had not disconnected power when I washed it out earlier, at a minimum, I would've had fireworks or worse killed by electric shock. So please don't wash out your coils with power applied to unit, it might take your life!

  • @mikestockert8031
    @mikestockert8031 Před 8 dny

    This just came across my feed. DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE UNIT RUNNING. Not cause of any electrical hazard - you risk damaging your compressor. That unit is the heat rejector it’s supposed to be blowing warm air - and when you’re spraying COLD water on the coils it’s going to drop your head pressure significantly, lower your compression ratio and overheat the compressor.
