Exploring Two Old Gold Mines in the Desert
This is one from the archives. I took this footage over three years ago in April of 2020 and never ended up posting it. There were some issues with my camera's microphone, and I guess at the time I thought the footage was unusable. Well, I happened to take a look again and realized the issues weren’t that bad and that this footage is worth showing. I hope those watching can get something out of the video, although it may be lacking in many aspects compared to my newer ones.
The first mine we explored, The Emperor, was discovered in 1897. A decent amount of high grade gold ore, which averaged about 100 ounces per ton, was shipped off in the early days of the mine. Somewhere around 1902 to 1903 the mine’s production declined as the vein was apparently faulted off. In the preceding decades the mine was worked in a small way by various individuals, who leased out portions of the mine. Production from the start of operations to the 1940s totaled around $100,000. The second mine we explored, the Golden Crown, was a much smaller operation that was worked around the same time as the Emperor. Production figures are not available.

An Awesome 1940s Silver and Lead Mine
zhlédnutí 34KPřed rokem
The Pipeline Mine was a Silver and Lead mine that was worked from 1937 into the late 1940s. The outcrop of the deposit was known about much earlier, since around the turn of the 20th century, but no major development was done on the claims until the late 30s. The company that formed to work the mine apparently had high hopes as a camp was immediately built to house 45 miners with 16 small bunkh...
Titanium Mine in the San Gabriel Mountains
zhlédnutí 13KPřed rokem
The Iron Blossom Mine was a titanium producer in the western San Gabriel Mountains during the years 1927-1928. The ore, referred to as magnetite-ilmenite, titaniferous magnetite, or titanomagnetite contains interlocking grains of the iron ore magnetite and a titanium-iron oxide known as ilmenite. It occurs near the contacts of anorthosite and gabbro-diorite intrusions. The ore was in the form o...
A Tungsten Mine with Fluorescent Minerals
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 2 lety
Over a year ago Cash, Taylor, Xavier, and I explored a small tungsten mine in the Mojave Desert. The mine was likely discovered in the late 1800s when the area was prospected for lead and silver, but it wasn’t until the 1940s that the mine was worked for tungsten. From the early 1940s to the mid 1950s, a small ore body was mined which contained 2-10% Tungsten Trioxide concentrates. This was con...
Tour of a Privately Owned Gold Mine

Recently, Xavier and I were invited to see a privately owned gold mine in the Sierra Nevada region of Kern County. We were invited by Gavyn, who has been helping the owner evaluate the mine to see if it can be reopened. This mine is a historic property that dates back to 1855. From its discovery, mining occurred on and off until the 1940s producing over 3 million dollars worth of gold in period...
A Small Mine and Mill in the Desert Mountains
zhlédnutí 18KPřed 2 lety
This is a small mine and millsite that I happened to spot while driving to another location. It was surprising to me because I had studied this area before and had not found any mention of it. It is only marked as a prospect on topographic maps and it is not noticeable in satellite imagery unless you already know it's there. I still do not know anything about this mine's history. It probably da...
Panamint City Part 4 - The City!
zhlédnutí 17KPřed 2 lety
This is the long overdue fourth and final part to our Panamint City adventure! This video was filmed at the end of our second and the beginning of our third (last) day in Panamint City. It focuses on the town itself, which includes two mills, historic cabins, workshops, machinery, and pictographs. After exploring the town, we made the long hike down Surprise Canyon back to our cars. Panamint Ci...
Panamint City Part 3 - Mines of Marvel Canyon

After visiting the Wyoming Mine we hiked into Marvel Canyon to explore the numerous mines located there. The first mine we visited was the Hemlock Mine, which was the largest silver producer during Panamint City’s hayday. The Hemlock was discovered around the same time as the Wyoming and was worked by the same company. It was connected to the Wyoming Mine by a wagon road where ore was shipped t...
Panamint City Part 2 - Exploring Its Mining History
zhlédnutí 106KPřed 3 lety
The Wyoming Mine was discovered shortly after Panamint City’s big silver strike in 1873. It would soon become one of the principal mines in the district with its rich ore assaying up to $600 per ton. In the beginning, the Wyoming Mine went through the hands of several different operators including the Wyoming Consolidated and Panamint Mining Companies. It, along with most of the other claims in...

I would first like to say thank you for 10,000 subscribers! When I started my channel I never thought it would ever grow this big. I thought maybe I would get a couple thousand subscribers if I was lucky. My earlier videos were poorly filmed and my current videos, although much better, are not high quality productions by any means. However, there is something about my videos that have caused ov...
Returning to a Great Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine

Link to first video: czcams.com/video/6fwqDiVNsdY/video.html We recently returned to this mine to explore new areas and drop the two winzes on the 400 ft. level. The first area we explored was an open stope that dropped into a part of the 50 ft. level we could not access last time. This part of the mine turned out to be way more extensive than we thought it would, and there were winzes and stop...
An Incredible Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine - The Deeper We Go, The Better It Gets

The most enjoyable explorations I’ve done are of mines that keep getting better and better the farther you go into them. These are mines that just keep on giving and each level you explore is more exciting than the last. This is one of those mines. From the headframe, ore bin, and incredible dry-stacked walls outside, we had a feeling that this mine was going to be neat, and that assumption was...

Exploring the Scenic White Ridge Mine and Mill

I explore above and below ground at this incredible mine high in the California mountains. I also experience low oxygen levels for the first time inside a mine. The White Ridge Mine was an operation that lasted from the 1930s up into the late 1950s. The goal of the operation was to drive a crosscut tunnel and intersect a series of veins that outcrop about 1000 ft. above the canyon bottom. These...
Finding a Water Pump and Rescuing a Snake in an Abandoned Mine

In this video, we rappel 200 feet into an abandoned gold mine located in the Mojave Desert. The mine featured an awesome water pump and a number of other interesting relics. On the 200 ft. level, we found a live snake that we decided to rescue. The snake seemed very cold and there was no way it could get back up on its own. Hopefully he doesn’t make the same mistake twice, as there are many sha...

I went out to Nehr and Limerock today. I kept my eye out for that second one ate Nehr, but didn't see it. I'll have to keep my eyes pealed next time I'm out there. It was a quick trip, but an interesting area.
Hey do you think it is still open in 2024?
that is a steam powered air compressor outside the mine you said the boiler looked exactly like the one below and it was probably exposed to freezing and busting the tank on top as the one below ground wasnt exposed to such extreme conditions..
What a great film of the Bonanza mine!.. I was a hard rock miner a year. Been looking dreaming of exploring this mine past 5 years.. Amazing film work..great lights. Thank you for sharing
Dredging by all the p*** and the needles you're not in California anymore you must be in Arizona😂
If you google the V.C. Kelley Cal Tech, there's interesting info about the guy.
One of the best mine explorers I’ve ever seen 👍😳😃
Great video! 50 years ago on the other side of the freeway where there are now houses used to be a spot that people went to shoot guns open field. It was fun. At that time, I heard there was a "Titanium" mine in this area, but never knew the actual FACT of it. AWESOME video!!! Thank you.
One of my favorite hiking areas
I would assume that the bear canyon placer mine evolved into a hard rock mine as the placer deposits became exhausted and the miners began searching for the source of the placer gold...
3:20 to 3:29 looks like someone with a miners helmet and lamp is looking at the camera from inside the addit!😮
Was that your mine buddy?!
Never ever handle old dynamite in an old mine. I worked in a hard rock lead silver mine in Idaho and I know a lot about using the stuff. People see you do this on your video and they think it is safe and it is not.
I grew up in Acton from 1955 until 1970. And we explored Minds all over that area growing up
i really wish you would have taken some of these artifacts and gave them to local museums because once it collapses who knows if they will ever see it again.
why are you guys not using 4k yet?
I went there back in the 70"s there once were cabins there and tracks all over
It would have been amazing to see that!
You certainly have done your homework, and really new what to look for to find all the outlets of this mine! About 43 years ago my friends and I loaded up our Boy Scout style packs, topo map, compass and equipmrnt and camped up near the mine, and enjoyed all that you showed in your video. I love that there is very little, if any, litter or graffiti. Thank you for the amazing walk down memory lane...uh, trail!
There are a couple more hidden adits I found after I posted this video. It's an amazing place for sure!
Oh yes the upper Manzanita North. There's like four more drifts above that and then on the opposite side of the mountain but as you know the main two are the ones the one that you went in and the one below it that's not dugout
Yep the lower adits look way different now
Dope nick
Thanks Tim!
I remember when I went in there it's full of water at the bottom and it actually keeps going down below the water and there's an old ladder that goes deep down in the water
hmm might be worth pumping out
The old house below it was the miners cabin house and they made the Adobe bricks from the area that's the house that I'm remodeling right now and fixing up all the nails are square nails it's right below this mine shaft that's on the property that's crazy man I am doing remodel on the house that they lived and worked in they had 5 fire places inside
That's awesome man!
What city is this mine near ?
Walt Dorn. They lived in Green Valley from 1916 to 1930 and again from 1943 until the 1980’s. He had pictures of the mines including ones with him in them. He also had his own claim for gold he mined in the Angeles Forest.
I find it very interesting how these mines were made by men probably not around anymore and how they get closed off inside to maybe never be seen again
Some of these mines can be like time capsules if you get lucky and dig one out with lots of equipment inside. I always wonder what it would be like to work at each of these specific mines back in the day.
Which Banaze mine, the one in the catchumack valley in Alaska or some other state?
Bonanza mine is a fake name for this site
Is this mine active again?
I don't think so.
something else in that tunnel at 5:18 you can see the refection from the torch in its eyes as it ducks away
That was my friend ahead of me!
Love the video! FYI, I just went there on Tuesday and the there's a lot more water now after all of the rain we had in the LA area.
I'm not surprised about that. I watched your video on it and the rubio canyon mine! Great job!
@@forgottenmininghistory Nice, I think I saw the video you made a few years ago on that one before going. I've passed by the adit multiple times, and finally decided to give it a look.
There are tunnels like this on Kauai. The tunnels go under mountains to divert water to the sugar cane fields. I heard the chinese workers dug them.
That sounds really cool. I'll have to look into those.
Lone ranger first was a radio show, so that pre-dated TV.
Stiiiiilll falling.
I have an ore car from the Bonanza mine in Colorado my Dad and uncle retrieved in the 1950s
The road used to be very passable. A friend of mine drove up in his VW with no problems in the late 60's .
I havent been up there in over 25 years. Loved it up there. I heard a fire swept through there a few years ago.
Yeah, there was a big fire around 2008. It's still beautiful up there.
I thought I was seeing things, so I watched it twice. You picked up a FULL 8" stick of 40% T'NT Dynamite that's been improperly stored for 104 years. Stop. What's wrong with doing that? Hint: 20th century Dynamite has a 12 month shelf life. The stick You picked up if dropped at any point from the second it was an inch off the floor to Your face would have turned You two knuckleheads to red wind. You're stupid lucky, & it's exactly that type of thing that gets people killed. Absolutely the stupidest jackass moment I've seen in 20 years of CZcams. What did You do with it???
they gave it to your mom as a present.
Nice! This reminds me of a spot near Monte Cristo Campground that I stumbled upon a few years ago.
It does kind of look like one of the mines up there haha
Hello there, about 3 years ago you did a two part video on the Bonanza Mine. I am particularly interested in the Kennecott Alaska Bonanza mine. I understand there a many "Bonanza" mines, can you confirm that this not the Alaska one?
It is not the alaska one. Bonanza was just a fake name I gave to the mine
Nice work, show more of the rock inside the mine, it would be great to see good pics of ore.
To bad n wish the rails n car was for sale that would make a good backyard railroad
❤ thank you
Thanks for watching!
Stope is dope
great video im inspired to check it out
It's a great hike. Thanks for watching!
That is the Long Dave cabin. The story goes he went to the doctor and got a terrible diagnosis. Hey bought a bottle of booze a cigar and preceded to get tanked. At the end of the cigar he lit a keg of dynamite and blew himself up along with the cabin. Great place to visit!!!
Woah, never heard that story before. Thanks for sharing that!
The Circle with a dot in the center is a universally known symbol for Gold.
Interesting, thanks for the insight!
Bear Canyon Mine. Copper then gold until the 1950s. Sadly it's guarded now but you can probably find a way around.
This one's further North near Acton. But I did see the guard shack you're talking about when driving by a while ago. Any idea what's going on there?
I've always wondered what medieval armaments would look like if they were made of heat resistant metals such as titanium and tungsten. Whenever old books talk about a sword being better than other swords I can't help but wonder if it's made out of an element other than iron.
You got to wonder. Could've been impurities and other metals in the iron that accidentally made them stronger.
That ore moving demo was incredible 🤯 Insane find, gentlemen 👏
This might be our greatest find yet. Thanks for checking this video out! I really appreciate it.
I used to go to those mines out there .there is lots of vertical mine shafts .
There are hundreds of shafts over there
Awesome video
Didnt realize there those types of mines near us
