Kenthla Well | 700 Year old Stepped Well | Sher Shah Suri
Kenthla Stepped Well or the Losar Stepwell is an Archaeological site located at Kenthla village on the top of the Margalla Hills, on the boundary of Islamabad and Khanpur, District Haripur. This Stepped Well belongs to the Sher Shah Suri Period and Can be dated back to 16th Century. Sher Shah Suri (who lived from 1486 to 1545) was the founder of the Sur Empire in North India. During his reign, he built many roads, wells and other historic buildings in the region. The Kenthla well is more than 700 years old, but it is in much better condition and its architectural features are well preserved.
Sher Shah Suri during his reign focused a lot on social development as he established a network of roads called Grand Trunk Road (GT Road) between Kabul and India to provide an easy access, not only for the officials and Military but for the general public as well.
In order to facilitate them further he established stepped wells (also called as Baolis) at regular intervals along the GT Road. This Baoli comprises of a circular well and an adjoining staircase going down within the structure to have access to the well water.
According to the Asian Civilization journal issued by the Taxila Institute of Asian Civilization in 2010, the Baoli has 11.3 metre length, 3.5 metre width and 04 metre height. It is rectangular in shape and has been constructed in dressed lime stone masonry laid in lime mortar. A stairway descends directly from the platform and ends up at a similar small landing built up at a short level above the water table.
