WHO I AM:
Hi I’m Claire, aka Ms Britaly! In 2018, I decided I wanted to change my life and relocate to Italy. I didn't know anyone there, I didn't speak the language and I had only visited the country twice before. Just eight months after I had made this decision, I packed up my suitcases and moved solo from London to Italy, embarking on my very first Expat experience. On paper it sounds completely bonkers but in reality it was the making of me.
On this channel I share with you the beauty and reality of everyday life, here in South Italy. I also share insider tips for visiting South Italy, so that you can get the most out of your Italian experience!

    Hello. What you say is true. The country is divided , and never really been united. People are so selfish and and arrogant.In the very south things are even worse. People not open to the rest of the world but prisoners of their own fobias.

    Hello Claire, I've just come across your video. I can totally understand your account of your experiences here in Italy. I moved from Kent (UK) to the province of Salerno over 40 years ago. Everything you say here is true. It's still difficult to fit in sometimes, even after all these years. However, I wouldn't live anywhere else! Living in a small town, I actually love the less complicated way of life. England has changed too much over the years..... I don't want to say anything too negative about it. It's just not for me any more. So, dear MsBritaly (love the name btw!), persevere. You're here for a reason. You'll love Italy with all your heart one day ❀

      @MsBritaly Pƙed 15 hodinami

      Yes, it's a bit of a walk. The area around the port isn't the best, especially at night, so just be aware.

  • @rudolphvalentinoconnection8298

    Hi, thanks for this video! I'm booked for a month with a woman who works for MIUR and is a top Airhnb host, near the Port (via Porto) ....haggling out the travel insurance etc. but now figuring out all the other details of a Mid-Oct to Mid-November trip. I am dreading the travel but the reward of getting to Salerno and environs will be worth it!! I know what you mean about the tourist hordes! I'm so glad I spent 2 weeks in Italy 50 years ago! My other trips to Europse have never been with others...I prefer to try to blend in and not be a tourista! But, I"m afraid Salerno is on the verge of being ruined...I know some flights are now going into a section of the re-opened airport and the big plans for really expanding it will probably will be the last blow...Bad enough cruise ships are already docking there...I'm going to Salerno because my great grandfather was born near there and it's close to getting to Pompei/Naples on day trips, Paestum and I can get to Campobasso, across the boot, too. I will only have a few hours in Rome when I arrive before I sleep in a hotel and then off to Salerno....ALONE, age 73! EEK!

    In two days I will be back in Castellammare for another 3 month stay. This time I am really going to focus on improving my Italian language skills. I've asked my friends there to try to help me by offering more corrections and to help me say things properly. Hopefully this will help as I've kind of hit a wall in my learning. I have had so many firsts in Italy/Sicily. During my summer this time I think I am going to try SCUBA diving for the 1st time! Oh, and your puppy is super cute! Take care, Paul

    Taking care of a pet, especially dog, increases the production of oxytocin, the hormone of love. Probably in a couple of months you could start training your dog. Dog training places are practically everywhere today. There are some nice dog training videos but everyday practice with a real dog is just a different thing. 😅

    Hi Ms Britaly. Congrats on your first ever dog. In the whole of Italy people eat sushi, as raw first is quite normal to eat. Not every day but on special occasions definitely. It has to be fresh but that is easy to find here. I have never had sushi I in the Uk either. The fist time I had it was in the 90’s in Milan with my Japanese client. We were there for a fashion show. There ate a lot of firsts in Italy. I hardly ever ate fish in England but here pretty often. Ok fish and ships in England yes. We have an area near me in Tuscany that does a fish n chips ‘ Sagra ‘ every year and you can have it every day from many places as there is a Scottish community there. It seems like being in England or Scotland there.

    TEFL courses/qualifications are popular with those who want to travel, but I’ve always wondered how can someone teach English if they don’t speak much of the language of the land they’re in? I mean, what if a student has a question?

    • @MsBritaly
      @MsBritaly Pƙed 2 dny

      You manage. It depends on the age of the student, their level etc but essentially there are ways to describe things and it ends up becoming a beautiful learning experience for all. That said, if you don’t understand anything in the native language then you are less likely to want to work with students who have zero knowledge of English as a lot of explanations will need to be done in the student’s language. However, if you find yourself spending the majority of the lesson speaking in the student’s language, I would suggest that maybe it’s not an English lesson after all

    Dear MsBritaly, As a Brit-American married to an Italian gem (my wife's from Naples, and came over to America when she was 16, not knowing a word of English), and also as a professional TV/video writer/director, I want to thank you for your most beautully articulated (and accurate) observations here regarding what it's like for us to truly encounter and live in Italy. My wife and I typically spend most of our time in Rome but principally in Sardegna, which I absolutely love! I think the real key to living in Italy (coming from Manhattan, or San Diego, where we also live) is to simply let Italy wash over you, in a way to just let go of all expectations: to sit in your favorite cafe, and just observe--to hear the distant church bells, to watch the children at play, to eat slowly, because you're enjoying real food, not the sad processed slop they call food here in America, and yes, to indulge, and have that second cappuccino or second glass of fresh wine. And then to tilt your head up to the gentle sun, truly feeling (almost for the first time) the gentle soothing breeze cooling your brow. Time, what time...I'm just being and loving it! Yes, Italy may not be perfect but, for me, it is, because, as you wisely said, you can find perfection in imperfection...thank you for this gift...of taking me back to my favorite cafe there, replete with its ineffable charms and delights! Am grateful...

    I retired to Sicily in January 2018. Despite being fluent in Italian, I faced major challenges. How about, you cannot make a valid contract (to buy or rent property) without a codice fiscale (like a National Insurance Number). But to get a codice fiscale, you must demonstrate that you have a residential address. Catch 22 ahahaha 😂

    I'm finding it hard that often the landlords want someone with references or a permanent job contract and they don't want to rent to foreigners. I don't have a job contract, I am using my savings and in the future I want to be self-employed working online.

    I like German efficiency, but I would never live in Germany because I value the warmth and open-hearted nature of southern european cultures more. My country (Portugal) has a lot of the same problems as the South of Italy, but I would rather have these problems than the tradeoffs of nothern cultures. There are no perfect countries and no perfect cultures, I think the secret is finding somewhere that fits what we value in life and we can live with the drawbacks of that place too 😊
