Exmark Pioneer s-series 60" review. UPDATED on 10/31/2018. Have used this since for 3 cutting seasons (April to October around here). I use it for residential use and cut about 4 acres per week. It takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how wet it is. You have to slow down a bit to avoid tearing up wet sod. Without going out and looking at the meter, I'd guess it has 150 ho...

I found many videos showing people with zero turns cutting grass. MANY live in FL or IN or other flat places. The ones that were on hills were shot at such an angle it was difficult to determine how steep it was. I hope this help you.

      From what I've read, a lot of issues with these speedometers. I've heard the newer ones are better (not sure if that's true though). I know that Ural of New England has them listed for $219 if I remember correctly. I had about 2 weeks of warranty left when mine was replaced. You can read my post down below for my experience with that.

    • @rfluharty
      @rfluharty Před rokem

      It was replaced under warranty. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the closest dealer. First, they had no idea the speedometer should be setup with proper odometer mileage to match the old. When I told them about it, they entered the miles in improperly, and said it was "locked in" wrong and wanted me to come back again when they got another one in stock. Luckily, I found a factory reset procedure on SovietSteeds and showed their mechanic. They were reluctant, but finally agreed to try. It worked and they finally got it fixed after I provided they procedure. They deal in like 5 other brands and I don't think they know much about Urals. They appeared to have no training. I was not very pleased with their service, but the new speedometer works properly.

    These are solid entry level mowers for a professional. I've still got two of thrm with over 1500hrs each and all I've replaced was the throttle and choke cable, one belt, and one spindle for the both of them over the last five years. They're tanks if you take care of them. They're no Lazer Z's of course, but they're still more than adequate.

      @rfluharty Před 3 lety

      Between 350-400 hours, which I'm sure is nothing for this machine. Probably good for 3,000 hours. Not a hiccup yet. Starts, runs, and cuts like the day I bought it. Althought I think maybe the tires have hardened a bit. Don't seem to have as much grip as when new. I'm assuming rubber is getting harder because the tread is still great (hard to wear out tires that never leave the turf). If you find one in good condition, I'm sure it would give you many good years of service. I figured this would be the last mower I'd ever have to buy, and I believe it will. Or I"ll be too old to mow my lawn by the time it's wore out.

    *Really impressive🌾🌾 **allabout.wiki/Z254** I also purchased the optional Dual-Bagger kit to collect the grass, but have yet to use it. Primarily because the mower does such a great job of mulching so as to leave little to no grass as you mow. I also purchased a small utility trailer to connect to the back of the mower. This has been a god-send as it has allowed me to do some serious pruning and clearing of large areas in the back yard. I've been able to load up the trailer full of tools, drive them to the work-site, and when I'm done, it's just one trip back to the garage to put everything away.*

    Bought my Pioneer-S in 2011 with the mulching kit with upgraded seat, and it's been a trooper ever since. Unlike many commercial idiots, I rarely ever need to run it at full throttle. The only thing I don't like is the side-loading gas tank. Whomever had that idea should have been fired.

      @asthecrowflies1201 Před 2 lety

      Just because you didn't have a problem doing light duty work with a semi commercial grade mower doesn't mean we are idiots for using the equipment properly or how it was designed to be operated. If you read your manual, it'll tell you that you're supposed to run the pto with the machine at full throttle. That's how it was designed. Try cutting more than a yard or two a week and see how those 3400s hold up...

      Not a bit of problems, although to be fair, I only have about 160 hours. That's the thing about having a mower that's probably overkill. I bought this at age 40 and at an average of 60 hours/year, I'll probably be dead before I wear this thing out. Although the logical reason for this is that it takes me under 2 hours/week to cut my grass, not 4 or 5. Another downside is that it's so much fun, by the time you get into it, you're done.

    When the ground is wet will it leave big ruts?

    • @rfluharty
      @rfluharty Před 7 lety

      I guess it depends what you consider "wet". If you can walk through it and not leave footprints (depressions), then you're probably ok. More than ruts, what you will get if the grass is super wet is that it will tear the sod up when you turn, even while using proper turning and both wheels in motion. This particular mower is around 900lbs. Mowers such as the Lazer and very heavy duty commerial mowers are very heavy machines. It's difficult to imagine that they won't all tear up grass under bad conditions. It's just physics, when you have a 1/2 ton machine moving, you have lots of momentum to stop/turn.

DICK & DOUG TEGTMEIERBy DENNE GOLDSTEINIf you’re in the lawn mower business, you’ve probably heard of Tegtmeier, one of the most respected names in the business, and rightly so. Both Dick and his son Doug Tegtmeier learned the lawn mower manufacturing business from the ground up.Dick Tegtmeier was born in Kansas and in 1956, at the age of 17, he left home. He couldn’t afford to go to college so he moved to Witchita, Kansas, and got a job working in construction. I guess you could say he wasn’t comfortable when he had to work outdoors in the wintertime. He had been working in Kansas and Nebraska when, four years later, he took a job with Dempster and moved to Beatrice, Nebraska. Tegtmeier had taken drafting in high school and while with the construction company had taken correspondence courses in drafting. Part of his job at Dempster involved drafting. In 1966, Dick Tegtmeier went to work for Keyes, a company that did contract manufacturing, and it was during this time that he learned the lawn mower manufacturing business. Keyes did not have a propriety product, and by 1972 ownership felt it needed its own product. In those days, cutting-edge mowers were walk-behinds. Dick worked at home developing a walk-behind lawn mower; by 1975, he was ready to introduce it to the market. Keyes had been in business for more than 100 years, but had never reached sales of one million dollars annually. With the introduction of their new propriety product, they hit the ground running and by 1981, just six years later, the company had reached the $5 million mark in sales. They brought in Bob Martin, who came from Bunton, to do the sales and marketing. Back then, Bunton was a top name in the market.Dick and a few others weren’t too happy with the company. He began working at home, nights and weekends, developing a new mower. With some investment partners, in May 1982, Dick Tegtmeier started a new company called Exmark. But starting a new company requires a whole new approach to marketing, a new plant facility and all the other little things that go into establishing a new business. Exmark started off good, but hit a slowdown in early 1987.Things weren’t going so well and some of the partners had a difference of opinion. By August 1987, sales began to pick up; however, the damage was done and in February of 1988, Dick Tegtmeier left Exmark and started Encore Manufacturing. On the personal side of his life, Dick was raising a family. He has two children, his son, Doug, and a daughter, Julie. Doug loved baseball and played in college while attending the University of Nebraska. He was a pitcher, and upon graduation he went on to play professionally. After kicking around the minor leagues for a number of years, Doug realized his limitations and felt it was time to move on. But what would he do? Ever since he was a kid, he’d heard about the lawn mower business. As a pre-teen, he worked in the factory after school, doing janitorial work. When he got a little older, he worked on the assembly line, and of course at the dinner table he would hear all about what went on in the business that day. Doug Tegtmeier knew this business from the inside out. At the age of 25, a sales position opened at Encore; Doug applied for it, and got the job. It was a good time to enter the business. “It was the best move I’ve made,” said Doug Tegtmeier. “The people involved in this industry are great.” After all these years, he could finally put together the names that he’d heard with the faces. Doug proved his ability. Both father and son set out on a path to grow the company. As Doug focused on domestic sales and working closely with their distributors, Dick put his energies on overseas markets, and private label products.Doug Tegtmeier had rounded out his experience. With his background of working in a factory and now his proven sales and marketing ability, Doug was named president of Encore about three years ago. Dick became chairman. About a year and a half later, the international business began to pay off. Encore started making mowers for Ferrari. The Ferrari mowers are now sold through the Ferrari Company in about 30 countries. While this was happening overseas, the domestic market seemed to be having its problems. More than 50 different companies were marketing lawn mowers. There didn’t seem to be enough sales to warrant so many companies. A shake-out was inevitable. Over the past few years, consolidations, roll-ups, and tuck-ins had taken place, with more to come. One of the reasons for the sluggishness of the sales of commercial lawn mowers is that contractors buy a piece of equipment and keep it until it falls apart.They generally don’t plan on a replacement until their old unit is worn out. Because the weather has not been very favorable both last year and this (it rained into early June) a number of contractors felt they could hold on and get another year out of their old equipment. Dick Tegtmeier predicts sales to increase substantially next year. From a guy who’s been around for all these years and has experienced these slowdowns at least three times in his career, I’ll bet on him. There are many father and son teams in our industry-this one is a winner.

      I looked at Dixie Chopper Magnum HP, Toro, Bobcat, Scag, Bad Boyz, Ferris, even Simplicity. All the similar machines were priced competitive. And yes, most do use the same parts for engines and hydrostats, clutches, etc. That's a good thing. Parts availability. The only ones I'd say that buck that trend are John Deere and Kubota; very proprietary.

    • @rfluharty
      @rfluharty Před 7 lety

      Okay, did some Googling. Here's an example I found for the Worldlawn WYZ6027KW-H COBRA COMMERCIAL SERIES KAWASAKI 27HP 60" DECK ZTR $6199 Biggest difference I see is the they use the Parker pumps/motors vs. Hydrogear ZT3400. Not sure about the Parkers, but the ZT3400 can be bought for about $300 each, so future repairs won't be too expensive. I paid $6500 for Pioneer. So I don't see a $3000 difference, but about 1/10 of that.

    • @twosencefromcleveland6084
      @twosencefromcleveland6084 Před 7 lety

      The Parker hydraulics do not need a warranty. If you were a mechanic, you could take the parker stuff off your worn out mower and place them on a new one and still have superior hydraulics. Also, separating the pumps and motors makes the unlikely replacement easier and less expensive. Think how much even a lower tier hydrogear unit will be.

    • @rfluharty
      @rfluharty Před 7 lety

      What do you mean the would not "need a warranty"? I would not buy any new machine without a warranty. Just because something SHOULDN'T fail doesn't mean it WON'T. Manufacturers give warranties counting on not having to honor them. I a NOT a mechanic, but I can guarantee I can unbolt the hydrogear zt3400 units and replace them (last time I checked ~$300 online) should they fail. I'm not debating the quality of parker products, but your arguments about warranty and price don't hold water. I get that you like the independant pumps/motors, but what a poorly constructed argument. Okay I just re-read your post, are you implying anyone would take the old pumps and motors off an old machine and put them on a new machine? I'm pretty sure you're not going to buy a shiny new machine that doesn't already come with some type of drive system already. Quick update. IF you engage PTO at low idle (just above stall speed), the spring-loaded tensioner for the belt pulled gets pulled far enough to allow enough slack in the belt to slip off. I had this happen twice. A 2 minute job to slip the belt back on (no tools required). Learned not to do this again. I just don't like to engage PTO at very high speed. I feel this would be hard on equipment since electromagnetic clutches don't really have any "slip" when engaging.

    I have the exact same mower, with the upgraded seat, which is great. I got it for free, but would now gladly pay a few hundred dollars for it. The only thing I don't like about this machine, is the anti-scalp wheels really tear up the ground. I'm looking to buy a new mower to put a mulching kit on that's easier on uneven ground. The Hustler has scalping wheels inset, which might do the trick. But they are a bit more money then the Exmark. They have the Pioneer E, series #2 deck with 48 inch width for $5,000. Anyone try mulching with the E? Or have a mower that mulches really well with a kit? Will I hate a 48 inch after running the 60?

    • @rfluharty

      +Mark Mullen I don't know what deck yours has, but the 60 on mine doesn't seem to do that. Maybe your hard is much rougher? I get a bit of "stepping" on uneven (bumpy, not meaning sloped) ground, but that's the physics of such a wide (non-articulating) deck. Wish I had gotten free seat upgrade. Dealer wasn't much into "dealing". They were large dealer and I doubt my $7k made much difference to them.

      rfluharty I try to mow where I shouldn't with my 60 inch deck. If I was to buy a 48 inch with a mulching kit, I would alleviate doing that and not have grass clippings left on the lawn. It's just hard to pull the trigger to step down to a 48 inch. My Exmark dealer said I can trade in the standard seat towards the upgraded seat. The Kubota Kommander 48 comes standard with the upgraded seat. And has the 3100 hydro's. I'm just afraid I will regret not converting my 60 inch to a mulcher, and not getting a cheaper 54 inch for side discharging and as a backup. I wish money grew on tree's.

    is the fuel gauge not in the digital read out hour meter? i'm like you, i rather have a fuel gauge.

      @rfluharty Před 8 lety

      +Glyn Robinson Nope. No kind of fuel gauge. But after running this machine one season (40 hours) I can say that I don't really miss it. Maybe a commercial owner, cutting all day would need one, but I just know that I get 2.5 cuts (about 10 acres total) out of a tank. I fill up every other cut and have plenty of fuel. I have thought about getting a few connectors and some clear line to hook up to vent and thus make a sight glass. Not sure if this will work though.

    final update. My neighbor directly across the street is moving to Florida soon. We got to talking about zero turn mowers. He mows his 1/4 acre yard (the rest of his property is wooded) with a Hustler Raptor SD equipped with a 25 (?) hp Kawasaki engine and a 54 inch mower deck. He said he was thinking of selling it. It has 25 or 26 hours on it, in perfect condition. He got it late last season and I test drove it around the yard for a few minutes when brand new. Anyway he said if I was interested in it he will sell to me for $3,000. Last week I got a price on a new Raptor SD and it was $4,500 plus tax. He let me use it for over a week and I went over it with a fine tooth comb and it is in great shape. He said he will have it serviced, oil and filter change, blades touched up if I was interested, blades look new. So bottom line is I couldn't resist the price. I need it mostly to cut around all the trees, shrubs, etc. while the big Kubota will cut the large areas. Certainly not as strong as an Exmark or other larger zero turns but couldn't beat the price. Take care, Stanley

    Yeah I got my work cut out for me. I did get a price on a Hustler the FASTRAK model with 60" deck, 24 hp kawasaki engine, zt3100 gears, 4yr warranty. price quoted was $6400 + taxes, and I can get 0%/48 months financing. Price appears to be list as I called another dealer and they quoted the same price. Not much wiggle room on these. If the fastrak dealer would throw in the flex forks (to improve the ride) I might go for this one. This was a nice mower, rode very nice, and had a lot of thick steel in it. Neighbor across the street has the hustler raptor sd, smaller more residential zero turn and he really likes it. We'll see, again I thank you. Stanley

    Update. I test drove the Pioneer S, 60" on thursday. It was a 2014 model. Final out the door price with suspension seat including taxes was $8K, ouch!. Went and test drove the hustler at another dealer. Gonna keep looking, maybe Kubota, who knows.

      I think 8k is too much for that machine. That's really why I never looked hard at the exmark before I found mine. I was going to look at a used SnapperPro250. I had also looked at a Simplicity Citation (and more expensive twin Ferris IC700) because they were in my budget. Might want to look at those, plus maybe a Bobcat Fastcat. Those also looked like good machines. Also looked at Dixie Chopper MagnumHP. I could have gotten any of those for under 7k. I was surprised on the deal on the Exmark, because I knew they were pricey. When I found out I could have same deck as a Lazer on a machine in my budget, I was sold. Oh, check out the Gravely Turnpro 60 (or 160) if you can get a deal on those. They look nice also.

    rfluharty, just want to let you know you did a great job on the review of your mower. I really appreciate the quality of the filming, no shaking, etc. Also you were very well spoken. Thank you, Stanley

      Stanley Siedlecki Thanks. One of the first videos I've done. I use youtube videos for so many things. Howtos, reviews, etc. It CAN be a great resource. I just wanted to give back some. Wish Ihad some some good quality cutting video. I have two posted, but quality isn't nearly as good. My son tried, but he shakes like crazy. My wife shot a small clip, but from far away with very old crappy video camera. If I had tons of time to do these, Iguess Icould have kept using the old tractor and taking 6 hours to cut grass. Thanks again for the compliment, it is encouraging.

      Going to demo a pioneer S series thursday, 60" deck, Kohler engine, zt3400 axles. My first zero turn, (currently using a cabbed Kubota B3030 tractor with loader) to cut grass. I'll keep the Kubota, wife likes to cut the open field with the belly mower. Will probably buy it Friday--$7500 + tax. (0% for 48 months). Hope this is a decent price, includes the optional full suspension seat. Thanks for the video, really helped me. Any other suggestions before signing would be appreciated if applicable. Stanley

      Stanley Siedlecki I gave $6600 plus tax for mine, but nosuspension seat. That probably adds $400. Mine was on some kind of a sale. When I bought mine about 8 weeks ago, the Exmark site was advertising a "free upgraded suspension seat". I called dealer about it. Turns out, I wouldn't receive the upgrade, because my model was under a different deal. Buying the SS model would have indeed added a few hundred more. Dealers don't seem to budge beyond whatever factory does. Probably to prevent dealers from undercutting other dealers. There was like $150 in "fees" for financing. You MIGHT be able to try bargaining on that? Some pricing may depend where you buy. Mine was bought in Columbus, OH.

      rfluharty thank you again. Wow, $6600 is a big difference. I'm in Jarrettsville, Maryland and the local dealer does not budge much at all. And the fee for financing is BS if you ask me. My wife and I have bought numerous appliances over the years and never paid a fee for financing, we'll definitely fight over this. I'll keep ya posted how it goes. Stanley

      Stanley Siedlecki The last thing I can think of is that mine is a 2014 bought in early 2015 and may have been an unsold leftover.
