Great video but the music is too loud? Could you turn it off when you are speaking?
David (RE Falcate bracing and Gore's book) Assuming you have a library network available, borrow it from the library. Thats what I did and the full sized plans came along with the loan (you may need to do it as a inter library loan since not all libraries have it)
hello, I'm just a 16 year old boy trying to fix my uncle's old guitar, and I don't really have the tool to heat the fret wire. What would the consequences be and is it still okay to remove the fret wire without heating it?
Love Western Red cedar, wenge is beautiful too.
Great tips on the Mylar pickguards. Thanks!
It’s fairly easy to get all the parts including blankets from Amazon. Enough people have bought parts you can basically fill your cart with just their suggestions. Built my own for just $100.
Ziricote (Sir i ko tay) is awesome.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the gramil and Tomy Hovington's video. Now that LMI is no longer around to offer the gramil, I'd be curious to see other's solutions regarding how they would approach how to build one. If you build one I'll definitely watch the video and if you don't, I'll still keep watching. Thanks again!
thank you Eric . last time i looked at bending machines it was 750 ish eek now days . why audio your not that hard to look at .
I tested the Stewmac benders... Not terribly impressed. I don't want to spam your comments, but I am making/selling a version that is basically the next evolution of am LMI bender. I started working on it a couple years ago when I sorted out how to do cutaways on an LMI machine. I didn't move it forward out of respect for LMI, but when I found out they were closing shop, I decided to wrap up design and start production... It's under a grand... I'm also selling the components (temp controllers, blankets, slats, rollers, etc) at a reasonable price so if someone is going the DIY route they can get the bits and pieces they need. BTW... Your advice on the cutaway is spot on.
I was sent an email from Stewmac for $250 off of their kit price. If I could justify the cost, my price would be $1,750 instead of their regular price of $2,000. Maybe the value is there, but as a hobbyist who wants to build instruments smaller than what they are offering forms for, it would be a waste of money. I checked out your site and your pricing is much more reasonable. I plan on building ukuleles and parlor/tenor sized guitars to start, so these larger machines are not quite in my wheelhouse at this time. I'll definitely keep your offerings in mind when I decide to build larger instruments.
I sure miss LMI. Great people, excellent products, more reasonable prices.
The bending jig is very flexible and can be adapted to different shapes. Whether that is worth the money remains to be seen and is personal. Not for me it isn't ;-)
I purchased 6mm fiber glass arrows online in lots of 20, cut off the flights and arrowheads. Slipped on 6mm table ends and now I have excellent rods for a fraction of the price. 😊
6mm diameter that is. They come different lengths. I used a couple of large online sellers.
Thank you for this. THIS makes and has always made sense to me.
Picked up a few good pointers and some things I like to do differently. Like to cut a softer angle on top (5-6 degrees?) then roll off the back in the direction of the tuners. Slightly flatter slots is more material for the strings to cut through. Because slots do slowly get deeper over time. Have a 40 year old guitar with the original nut and frets and the slots look like the grand canyon. But amazingly they still function.
Thank you for this. I’m a new guitar player and I had no idea how the truss rod works. 👍
Why a maple cap for LP's then? Why did Les want an all Mahogany neck and body, no maple, saying it was a mellower sound? His words and that was the early 50's. Why not just make all electrics out of the lightest, cheapest wood?
Awesome video!
Thank you for the tip on Hovington and his video on making a gramil! If you do end up making your own (to improve on the LMI version that you have) please share!
So, how did it sound?
Good job Eric🤘 i live in France in" Normandy " but it's difficult to me to understand everthing ou say it's very technical ! In France it's metric in usa it's inches ( quarter , half, etc etc) Iam lost😂 too bad CZcams doesn't translate in french directly😢🤟🎸🎸🇨🇵🙏🇺🇸
My retiree “supply chain management” allows me to make the binding strips a few days before I use them. As I use a variety of local woods for necks fronts, backs and sides there are many aesthetic choices for binding. I consult with my wife as she has excellent artistic taste. I tend to use black walnut, white oak and burr oak. Burr oak sap wood has a lovely lacy appearance. It is great for fretboards also.
I addressed your comment in a new Q and A episode: czcams.com/video/tooziyCpQMY/video.html
I used Bubinga several times. I wouldn't use it for necks. It tends to warp a bit.
Thinking of the movie "The Swarm" 😬🤣
For the guy with the curly maple board who wants to make his own bindings. The guys at Driftwood guitars did a binding making video a while ago. It will be one of their old ones.

thank you Eric
I bought fiberglass rods from Home Depot that provide a good amount of pressure, so much so that my first attempts with the go bar deck was problematic bc the top of the go bar deck would slide up from the pressure from the go bars. These were a great find at Home Depot bc they were about 20 dollars for 20 rods. Then you go to the closet section and buy white tips. I ended up getting 40 rods and am very happy with my setup now.

When I asked why, he said he preferred what was readily available - and affordable.” www.guitarworld.com/news/leo-fender-tonewood-thoughts
8:00 I would argue keeping the guitar in rest against the body will not at all dampen the vibrations of the guitar itself. It won't do that on a classical guitar either. And I play on an Ibanez QX52 headless guitar which I can literally feel vibrate throughout the whole guitar body when playing. No damping there. Not even if I would try to dampen it. Also, magnetic pickups can pickup secondary effects from vibrations into the strings. This is why good setup is important and also why people want to avoid 'microphonic pickups'. I would argue the debate should be way more about how much/little the tonewood matters. Because even though the physical property is important, I would say it doesn't matter 'much'.
No. The moment you removed the air chamber is NOT when the concept of tonewood died at all. A solid piece of wood _still_ resonates. And the density of the wood matters. In fact, not even a classical guitar gets its sound from just the chamber either. Strings matter, neckwood matters. Heck, whatever is able to dampen the resonation that is on the guitar, also matters. Not everything matters quite as much. But it all does work fundamentally the same. The physics involved in a solid body electric guitar is _not_ actually different. And yes, however small the pockets in electric guitars are, they do allow for resonation too. Will it have a bigger impact than say a fresh pair of strings or the amp or pick ups you use? Probably not. But pretending it doesn't matter is ignorant.
Doesn't matter if the wood resonates. The magnet won't pick it up. You literally wouldn't even be able to tell if someone swapped the body out for carbon fiber.
I just picked one up myself. Looking forward to creating some offsets.
I addressed your comment in a new Q and A episode: czcams.com/video/tooziyCpQMY/video.html
Great job!Precise, well thought. A very detailed and smart solution!
Eric, Thankyou for your video. My question, what is the term for scalloping the back of the soundboard ? I assume its to reduce mass and perhaps strenghening. Whatever its called, does it affect the bond of the braces, or an extra bace put in retrospectively where the bond area cant be sanded flat ?
This is my first time on your channel. You do very good work. Beautiful. The sound to me is just as, if not more important than the beauty. You seem to nail both!!
Even a piano is tuned to a tempered tuning - meaning that every note is slightly off from the perfect frequency - which assures that all chords sound OK. The guitar is even worse since each string plays many notes not just one like in the piano.
a reinforcement of any material that runs inline with the neck will not be able to stop it from twisting. the axis of the rod can become the center of a twist whether the reinforcement is in the center of the neck or to either side.
I’m about to build my own guitar next week, i was told that building cutaway will be difficult for a beginner so he recommended me not to do it.
I addressed your comment in a new Q and A episode: czcams.com/video/tooziyCpQMY/video.html
I think the focus should be on less shrinkage and wood stability (no warping) when it comes to solid body guitars Anyone that has owned a cheap electric guitar and left it in the basement a few years can tell you it's not about tone it's about the thing turning into a twisted mess with the finish flaking off because of the wood swelling and frets sprouting like a cheese grater. My brothers old Gretsch was stored identically for the same amount of time....guess what...only damage was to the electronics. I now own it, other guitar was absolutely useless trash
Hits it straight on the tuner button screw. One born every minute. If you dont know how to do it... Dont do it !
This is the best nut cutting video I have ever seen. Brilliant work from both the artist and the camera angles. Thank you.
I didn't notice until this video that you (at least on the guitar displayed at 2:22) that you use an X bracing on the back of the guitar, as opposed to traditional parallel bracing with a back strip as many guitars have. Is there a specific reason for this? If you have covered this previously then I am unaware.
This is awesome, thx for share guys....
