Best day of the trip as far as weather went. Lower milage day kept spirits high as we made our way from Dwight, KS to Americus, KS. This leg included a trip down Little Egypt Road, for some of us it was our first experience on this storied section of Flint Hills gravel.

Wind was the word of the day for this one, sustained 25-35 mph with gusts exceeding 50 mph. It was not an easy day for anyone, everyone who finished should feel accomplished. Not a ton of video from this one as it was more about survival and keeping the tires from being blown out from under you.

Nestled in between neighborhoods, soccer fields and bustling city streets is a single tack oasis in Omaha, Nebraska. One of my favorite trials in the Big O, haven't been up there in a few years but a group of us made the trek this weekend. Well worth the trip.

Awesome! Great content as always. Beautiful area to ride in, and such great weather also. Must have been absolutely wonderful. I wish Sweden could look like that, and have gravel roads like you do! :)
Nice ride and awesome places, enjoy, greetings from Tuscany
Great video. Was there last year and watching as a brief refresh for this year. Agree that people are not the friendliest but I think there’s a good reason. It looks like you rode with a fairly paced strategy, I did the same last year. I found that most of the people I passed were bonked (probably from starting too hot) and in a pretty dark place, therefore not real chatty 😂. Hope to see you there this year!
Bonking could definitely be a possibility. Can't make it this year but there are plans to do the 200 in 2025! Thanks for watching.
Audibles indeed. 😁
MMR? Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?
or minimum maintenance road, interchangeable really depending on the situation.
Best intro yet
Awesome ride, cool video, awful music. The guitar playing doesn't line up in time with the drum beat on occasion and it's making me mute the video. Keep up the rides!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. To be honest the music is always a constant struggle, what goes with the mood of the ride, is it too loud, too fast, too weird... the music on this one was given to me by a good friend from a band local to our area that he is associated with.
It’s like I was there
No way, same here! :P
I know, weird...
@@justinhenrichs4013 you were there?!?!?!
Man… I need to do this one again. I went to high school in Bruning. (From Davenport) Nice droning!
You should it's a really fun event, Bruning FD really rolls out the red carpet. Drone was Justin's, I haven't upped my game quite that high, yet.
I dont recommend riding with one leg, but one is better than none! #bigGravelmiles
It was great chatting with you, way to get after it.
At least you had some shade. Now I’m all curious about single speeds haha
I'm a big fan of the simplicity of SS, was entirely SS only for about 5 years when I bought a 2010 Monocog. Got away from it until two years ago when I picked up a Stormchaser. Reacquainting myself with the love of SS.
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131 I ran across a single speed stormchaser in my size during my last stop thru Backroads Bicycle in Marysville. I should’ve test rode it.
@@TallGuyTrails Mark and Renee are wonderful and Backroads is a great shop.
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131 my brother-in-law lives there. I try to find an excuse to stop in every time I go.😆 I need to take my bike tho and ride the trails out there. Hasn’t happened yet.
@@TallGuyTrails Alcove Springs is a lot of fun with a splash of history. The falls along the trail were used by pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail to replenish their water supplies. There are still some visible names and dates carved into the soft limestone near the falls. Some sections of the trails out there kind of remind me of sections in Tranquility or Swanson.
Wow, you ARE famous! :) I am the guy you rode in from the campground with. Our event I was telling you about is the Touch Both Lines Gravel Grinder in Osceola MO August 10th. I know you said you might be in Idaho but if anything changes we'd love to have you all, even Dave.
If we can make it work we'd love to come down... if you have goats I think Dave would make the trip too. 🐐🤣
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131 lol, we have all the farm animals, some with questionable judgement...so I heard
Thank you guys so much for joining us last weekend! Great video! “I only know the horny ones”. 😂 I almost died! Hope to see you again next year.
We had a lot of fun, we will have to bring our A game next year. Yeah, sometimes we have to leave Dave in the car. 😂
what exactly is the "return on investment" of riding a single speed?
For me it's anything less than 4 mph. If you can walk as fast or faster than you can pedal up the hill you'll burn less matches walking. If want to experience it first hand you could shift into a gear that you can comfortably spin at 16 mph then find a good hill (10-15%) and ride it without shift. At some point the energy you expend exceeds the productivity or forward momentum gains and you're just burning out your legs. One or two hills probably wouldn't be that big of a deal but if it's in the course of a longer ride or race it could cause you to fatigue faster than if you would have walked those really steep hills.
Read the comment again... if you meant why ride single speed... simplicity mostly but honestly if you find the right gearing for you, it's easier than gears most of the time until you hit the monster hills.
I've been running so long that my feet don't work no more. Can you share the artist please?
The song is Devil on My Tail by Red Revision.
Thanks for taking me along for the ride. Recovery is progressing. Joining you soon.
Thanks for watching, hope to share some gravel with you in the near future. Speedy recovery.
Looking forward to tomorrow’s ride.
New video should be out soon, thanks for watching.
Looks great!
:Tomorrow's even worse."
Foreshadowing... dum, dum, dummmmmm
Love this video! Beautiful area.
Thank you. The Flint Hills is really a hidden gem that is best viewed by bicycle.
Great Video! I am from Sioux City and was wondering where the Trail Starts? Do you Park off of Maple? Or Fort St Side? Thanks
The dirt parking lot off of Fort is pretty notorious for car break ins, if it were me I'd park in the lot near Monolithic Brewing and ride over to the trail.
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131 thank you!
My buddy who rode this said a wind gust knocked him on his ass. I had a conflict in the morning so I couldn’t make it, but uh, I’m not sad about that haha
The winds were no joke, saw or heard of several riders going down due to the gusts. Great event however and worth checking it out next year.
Love the footage etc. but that music grates on my nerves. Why not just let us hear what you heard on the ride?
Thanks for the feedback, the music can be a bit overpowering at times but for me watching video that is just someone's raw footage tends to put me to sleep. Might look at knocking the volume of the music down a bit though, again thanks for the comment and a different perspective.
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131 fair enough. I love the natural sounds but not everyone’s preference.
very cool, I'd like to try that
we highly recommend it and would suggest making a week long trip out of it. Lots to see and do in Michigan.
@@nocoastgravelsyndicate8131I agree, I live in SE Michigan, but have spent time in Ludington on vacation.
I love the rear-facing camera. You can see the jumps and banks by the angle of the wheel
It was the better angle by far, had a forward facing camera as well but hardly used any of the footage from that one. The sense of movement and speed was way better from the rearward camera.
Recognized you while passing on a hill, meant to say hi
No worries, there were a lot of people. It was crazy no matter how deep into the race you got there were always people around. I think I remember seeing a Greenstreet jersey out there.
And a Yeee Haaaa!!
Good job finishing. Considering riding it this year.
Highly recommend it, views were amazing and the route (other than the sand) was on point.
I can't believe Joe caught up with you guys in the final third after dealing with my fiasco. Great event. Thanks to all that put it on!!!!
Joe finished strong. He also did a trail repair for somebody who fell in the final 10 miles and couldn't fix her tire. Hero material.
we weren't exactly flying, over two hours of non moving time probably helped a lot but he was riding strong.
Snot rockets!
So good as always!!
Thanks, man!
Got 5" of snow, and had single digit temps for two weeks here north of KC. Best Fatbiking we've had in years. Got out on the singletrack five times. Finally got my wardrobe dialed in on the last ride. Busting trail is TONS of effort. After 2 laps my 4.8 tires started laying down a decent track. Thanks for sharing your ride, enjoyed watching it. Great fun for all !!
We were pretty shocked that we didn't see any other fat bike tires for most of the trail but were a pretty small population compared to KC. Frozen two weeks ago and it's all melting in the 50s this week. Thanks for watching.
Love the video! Keep it up! (Subscribed)
Thanks for watching.
What is that crazy fat bike/gravel bike contraption that guy is riding ?
Salsa Beargrease converted to drop bars. I've seen a few around here converted that way for gravel use.
As a SoCal guy, just no. I have family in that area, and have ridden some of the roads in the summer, and had great fun. That ride, no not happening,no way no how. But great fun to watch from here. Thanks.
Spent several years around the Lake Forest/El Toro area in the early 90s, you all have it beat for weather but the crowds were something else. If you're ever around here in August, Gravel Worlds is a must ride event.
How was my route?
fun
Roads were soft in some spots, snow covered in others... very windy and cold. Not very hospitable for person or beast but a lot of fun. ;)
I heard “single speed”. Sweet. Will you please share your gear selection?
For this race I was running 38X17, Jackie was running 38X18 but I am toying with the idea of changing up to 38X16 for 2024.
Thanks. I started riding single speed this fall on a salsa Stormchaser. It’s super fun. Manistee National Forest is my favorite place to ride. It’s beautiful! Nice video….
@@stevenvcook It was a beautiful place to ride, one of these years we plan to come back for the 200. Maybe 2025.

they are a lot of fun, would have been better if we would have gotten some snow.

It's rolling really good right now, if you get a chance check out the Lazy Horse Gravel Grind in May. They ride a lot of the same roads.
My dad used to watch movies, on the wall behind you in one of the shots, during the interview.
@@garyonnen7634 NIce! It's a great little town and a much appreciated restaurant for the community.
Great seeing you all out there, I had a fun time!
the bike in the tree is at the same height where it was originally placed. Trees don't grow up along the trunk. Only the top grows up, the ends of the branches grow out, and the trunk and all the branches thicken.
reminds me of Arcata, CA
I didn't realize until making the video just how many ferns we were riding through. Definitely not the midwest.
many riders off the road. Were they fixing flats?
Ran into a section of the infamous flint rock that the Flint Hills is famous for, several flats and at least one unrepairable slash that I was aware of.
