Far View Community Site | Mesa Verde National Park | June 11, 2023
The drive from Far View Lodge to the Far View Community Sites is less than 2 miles.
"The Far View area was once an extensive farming community and one of the most densely populated regions of the Mesa Verde. This mesa top community includes Far View House, Pipe Shrine House, Coyote Village, Far View Reservoir (currently dry), Megalithic House, and Far View Tower. In ancient times, it was a place of modest homes interspersed with small farm fields. It was a place filled with people, vibrant life, and constant change.
Beginning around 800 CE, Ancestral Pueblo people lived here for several centuries, farming the deep mesa-top soils, building their homes, and raising their families. This was not always a quiet woodland. On a summer day in 1050 this ancient community would have been filled with the smell of juniper smoke and the sounds of everyday life: conversations between people working together, barking dogs, laughing children, ravens calling overhead, and the wind rustling through the shiny corn leaves. In the mid-1100s, there may have been at least 35 occupied villages and surrounding farm and garden plots within a half-square-mile area, including those you can visit today.
The archeological evidence at Far View reveal the presence of thriving mesa top communities long before the existence of the more famous cliff dwellings. But they also help disclose another, little known fact. Not everyone ultimately moved into and lived in the cliff dwellings. Some families clearly chose to remain on the mesa top, like those at Far View, well after many of their neighbors moved into cliff alcoves.
As you follow the woodland trail among the six sites, read the trailside signs to learn about Ancestral Pueblo life in the surrounding landscape between 800 to 1300 CE. Take a step back in time and imagine corn (maize), beans, and squash plants sprinkled along the landscape.

      @OleensEmbroidery Yum! We don't add sugar to ours either, but i like my vanilla almond creamer, and it definitely has sugar. I wish they had a monk fruit sugar version. The syrup is a good idea! Sounds good! I've used nut milk bags as well, but these premeasured coffee filters are the easiest, and the clean-up is quick.

    • @kendraskreations
      @kendraskreations Před měsícem

      Thank you so much! Yes, the eggplant has seeds - I kept them in for this recipe. They're edible and generally safe, though they can sometimes be a bit bitter or have a slightly crunchy texture. In younger eggplants, the seeds are small and tender, so they’re less noticeable. As eggplants mature, the seeds can become larger and more prominent, which might affect texture and taste. Removing eggplant seeds is usually a simple process. Here’s a method to do it effectively: Slice the eggplant in half lengthwise or into rounds, depending on your recipe. Use a spoon or a melon baller to gently scoop out the seeds. If you're working with halved eggplants, you can also use a small spoon to scrape out the seeds and some of the flesh if needed. If there are still some seeds clinging to the flesh, you can rinse the cut pieces under water to remove them. Pat the eggplant dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. For some recipes, like eggplant Parmesan or baba ganoush, you might not need to remove all the seeds, especially if they're small and tender. If you're concerned about bitterness, salting the eggplant before cooking can help reduce it, but it's more about the whole texture and flavor balance than just the seeds.

      The times you mentioned are for pressure canning, and I am pickling them so they are waterbathed, so the time is shorter. Since I'm adding the vinegar to change the pH it is no longer a low acid food and can be waterbath canned.
