Busy afternoon on the Amtrak Springfield line
Since I have a ton of free time at the moment do to being unemployed, I decided to eat lunch trackside today 2/19/24 and it turned out to be an interesting few hours. 1st up is Amtrak 406, than Amtrak Vermonter 54 came by and of course an incoming phone call comes in while I was filming (very glad my phone doesn’t stop recording for incoming calls). After returning the call CT Rail 6454 snuck up on me thanks to the soundproofing in my car and didn’t have time to get out and film them pass by. Than Amtrak Vermonter 57 came by. Finally CT Southern’s CSO-4 came south with OHCR 8530 and 3901 running light. Now CSO-4 left Springfield with a decent sized load, but 8530 experienced engine troubles just outside Springfield returned to the yard to cut their load loose, than finally went south light with 8530 headed for the CSOR shop.
This was the most trains I’ve seen on the Springfield line in one day.

Last Monday (7/19/21) marked the return of Amtrak’s Vermonter to revenue service for the 1st time in 16 months. This was an unexpected treat for a Saturday. While driving to a siren test in the morning I heard the Springfield line dispatcher talking to CSO-4 who was working the Suffield Branch until 1pm. Well that new job at the time I ended up staying there much longer than I thought. On 1/20/24 I was let go after 6 years with the company. It goes to show that if a company wants you gone, they’ll find a way to get rid of you no matter how long you’ve been there, how loyal you were, and how spotless your work record is. Oh well, a new opportunity will come my way soon (I hope).

The lead loco is actually ex-CN 9457, it ran down a grade on the Nepisiguit Sub back in 1987.

I remember as a kid growing up in the north end the trai.I had to cross the tracks on main Street to get to the drug store.cumberland farms. Of coursecthe streets were different. There was a bar. I lived across fro. The gas station. An old Dr.s house converted to a little restaurant out front and our apt. Out back. I remember so well. I cant imagine kids today crossing tracks and a road as a very young kid to go get an ice cream. We didn't have much. But we were outside everyday playi ng till after dark. I would cross the street and get a soda from the coke machine at the ggas station. That building is still there. The bank in an old house was a funeral home. Sad to see the trains gone. Trains built America. If we were smart we'd improve them like Europe. Rockville and Manchester had loads of trains and trolley that could get you anywhere. What a shame. 😢

Awesome catch bro! I remember seeing this train parked on a siding in San Diego years ago when I was contracting aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Coast guard Station. They were unloading and switching. My boss kept yelling at me to get back to work because I couldn't stop watching it. Needless to say, my productivity for that day was completely shot! It was so awesome. Thanks for this video! It keeps the magic alive, just a little bit. Stay safe!

Oh me too Nancy, as it’s only a very short drive from work and I usually get out right as they head south. My only complaint is they replaced the very nice sounding mechanical bell with that e-bell at the crossing.

Nice catch! I caught CSO-4 In Windsor Locks with NECR 3855, 417 and 8530 last week. I figured 8530 was going to Palmer for NECR.

If you want to try for them again, they go on duty Mon-Fri in Willimantic at 5am for the northbound run, usually getting to Stafford between 6:30am-7am. It varies when they depart Palmer, but usually get to Stafford between 1:30pm-3pm. If you have a scanner 160.770 is their frequency, keep an ear open when they get a track warrant, it’ll be an hour after they get the warrant when they arrive in Stafford.

What time does it usually come through Stafford
Depends on their load that day. Usually comes on duty at 5am in Willimantic and gets to Stafford between 6:30-7am for northbound Than southbound it gets to Stafford usually between 1-3pm Monday-Friday.

Ant 1200 I now work right in front of the RT 32 grade crossing in Stafford. They changed their schedule since I shot this video. They now depart Willimantic around 6am getting to Stafford around 7am in route to Palmer, and head back south to Willimantic around 10 am getting to Stafford around 11am mon-fri. 2 weeks ago they were heading north at 5am but seemed to go back to their 7am schedule last week.
