Westbury J class yachts and DF 65 races
United Kingdom
Registrace 16. 11. 2023
Clips of my 60" J class yacht and some df65 racing at Westbury lake in Wiltshire.
2 J's,a df95 and a 48" own design
Another light wind day on the lake for 4 of us. Rick's 60" Velsheda, Gerald's DF95, Alan's gorgeous little 48" own design and my 60" Topaz. Nothing spectacular as usual just 4 old boys negotiating the little puffs that came our way while enjoying the warmth and banter on the dockside.

Rick came out to play with Velsheda on yet another grey light wind day on the lake. Every now and then the occasional zephyr came along so we chased each other around some of the bouys until it all got too light to navigate
Topaz 60" J class model, sunshine and wind 13.08.24

Quite a strong gusty day on the lake. As usual the wind all over the place at times going from zero to /- 15mph making for a bit of spice. Mainsail sheeting needs adjustment as it's pulling in too far and choking the drive. I can see it in the video but didn't see it on the water, ho hum. Will be sorted for the next outing.

Yet again, nothing amazing, just another dull fickle wind day. Out with Rick and Velsheda plus Alan's very pretty 46" own design which besides looking pretty went like a rocket when she caught the wind. The lake was full of novice paddle boarders and canoes so we were a bit limited.

A baking hot high pressure humid day sitting under a tree sailing my 60" J class model of Topaz. A superb model to sail and in my eyes looks great on the water. Unfortunately Rick with Velsheda couldn't make it.

A hot day and these fish were all on the surface. They normally batter our DF 65's almost out of the water but body swerved the J : )

Ricks Velsheda and my Topaz J class yachts on the lake at Westbury on a virtually windless day. Alan Brown helming my boat while I chased them around in my slipper launch with a gopro hero9 which has incredible image stabilisation. These yachts are so flexible, light or strong, they are a delight to sail......they just keep moving along. I am still waiting for a lighter weight suit of sails as ...

Some short clips of this magnificent 80" J class yacht on the water with two 60" little sisters at Watermead lake Aylesebury. Alan Horne gave me a bit of history: "Charles's (80') boat is plank on frame built by him I think in the 1980s. He acquired a set of plans for a smaller model and scaled them up, it's a nice piece of work. A scale J doesn't work on the water so he's lowered the C of G by...

I made a H.A.Kits "Thames slipper launch" to keep me occupied while waiting on my J Class hull to be delivered. I thoroughly enjoyed the build but wasn't too sure what to do with a powerboat as sailing is my thing. I had a GoPro hero 9 which has amazing gimbal functions built into the camera and mounted it on a sail winch servo stuck to the deck with blue tack. This is the first outing.....real...

Great little sailboats! Do you have any plans or videos of making them or some technical close up? Would love to build one myself
Very nice and professional. I've got a J class rc yacht that's waiting for me to build I'm busy building the Queen Mary 2 RC ship at the moment. J class rocks
Thank you, it is a bit overcomplicated but it was my first attempt. It is such a lovely boat to sail so I have started another one using the lessons learned from Topaz. I have come up with another mad idea for the running rigging and if it all works out I will do an updated video of my new boat.
Absolutely the most beautiful boats - real and rc. I may have been immagining this but thought one had the genoa set closer to the hull. Given that these are 'wet' boats, does that have a material impact on the centre of effort of the sails, and does it matter to the balance anyway?
They really are the most beautiful boats aren't they. My boat "Topaz" with the translucent sails does have a slightly different sail plan to Rick's "Velsheda" and does suffer a little bit from a Lee helm, Rick's doesn't so you are probably spot on. I have overcome most of the lee helm by raking the mast back and can open/close the leech of the Genoa remotely to depower it enough to get everything fairly neutral. Unfortunately I need both hands on the transmitter to carry out all the available functions but only have one hand free as the other is holding the phone to take video. The biggest bonus is that the foot of my Genoa keeps the foredeck dry😁
Where is this Lake.
Right next to the railway station in Westbury, Wiltshire.
@@WestburyDF65races-fb1bf Thank you for the reply, from Auckland, New-Zealand here.
@@brendonnz1964 Blimey, probably a little bit too far away for you to come and share the water I think😁
Beautiful boats but there is a huge amount of twist in those genoas, hopefully can work out how to control the lech some more
Hello Simon, thank you. I am still learning, I think I made a bit of a mistake with the sail plan.😬 On Topaz I do have remote moveable cars for the Genoa but if I close the leech up I get quite a strong Lee helm (I think the mainsail is a bit too small) so I open the leech on the Genoa to get a better balance. I am experimenting with the foot depth and twist on the mainsail plus mast rake and hopefully will be able to find a better balance eventually or will have to get a new main. It is all a bit experimental as this is the first boat I have built. I have started another J and will take the lessons learned with Topaz for my new build, "Lionheart" and will hopefully do a better job. Funnily enough I have just tried her with a smaller jib and get a REALLY strong weather helm......it is all sending me a little bit mad but I will get there in the end.
Try more main sheet and less Genoa. Ie load back of boat and open slot That’s what we do on full size boats
Perfect dance. Which kind of material you have used for flag?
The flags (red duster) are made from cotton and they are 75mm long. I got them from "Alwayshobbies" an eBay shop.
@@WestburyDF65races-fb1bf Thank you a lot.
A Beauty.
Absolutely stunning. Please Could I ask one question, where did you get your mast and sails from? They definitely finish the model
Thank you. The mast is a lightweight but very stiff 14mm carbon tube up to the hounds and steps down to 12mm for the remaining piece at the top. I got the tubes and sails from PJ.Sails. The spreaders I cut from a 2mm sheet of carbon fibre......a filthy horrible job that took ages but the result is not too bad.
Very nicely done. I love this boat. I used the same hull to produce a boat with a Friendship rig (three overlapped headsails and a gaff rigged main with topsail) with the mast supported by functional running backstays. I used an ARS winch servo to control the main and jumbo jib, and a pair of them to control the port and starboard headsail sheets. There are also a pair of 25 kg servos serving to trim one of the foresail sheets on each side, another for the rudder, and a pair of 35 kg servos on the running backstays. My computer radio is very busy with lots of mixing, but it all sails like a dream. I can even give the local EC-12s a run for their money in light to moderate wind conditions.
Wunderschönes Modell. Majestätisches Gleiten.
Gliding along with virtually no wind!
Lovely boat, gorgeous lines!
Does not seem to need any wind to speed along.
Stunning! just dipping my toe into RC yachts (aero modeler sailplanes/gliders) this is a must-have when I am a bit more experienced with the sailing yacht builds and setup.
My background too : ) this is my first boat and she's very forgiving.
Got to see Velsheda in action in the Solent, with the massive sail in amongst the other yachts she was like a shark amongst the Sardines, so greatful to the man who resurrected her from her muddy decline on the banks of the River Itchen sometime back in the 1980's. These models all though much much smaller still carry the J class elegance
"Like sharks amongst the sardines" love it! Even at this diminutive size they are a pleasure to sail and so are good on the eyes.
Superb.
Thank you! Cheers!
How far can the boat go before she gets out of range of your radio control?
A whole lot further than I can see....I believe it is "line of sight" up to 2 km
So "J Class " is majestic, because of Genoa, does the job beauty.
I like the wake she creates as she moves through the water...
Stunning Yachts and the Velsheda GoPro was impressive
Happy you like these little J s, they are so nice to sail even when its this calm.
Wundervolle und wunderschöne Boote. Danke für`s Zeigen. Gruße aus Deutschland
Wonderful video. Really loved the Chase Boat video, too. Great addition. I'm just a little disappointed that you didn't splice in some drone video. That would have completed the coverage in professional sportscaster style!
Thank you, loads of "boat" and camera problems robbed me of loads of good stuff : ( However this young lad below did take some drone footage and is going to edit more. Morning Martin Here is a short clip will send the longer version later when it’s finished Neil czcams.com/video/xW9N595xb3g/video.htmlsi=a4i7I5MvY87lbiDw
or how can i build that?
Gary on the channel "sail tails" shows how to build similar boats👍
where can i buy something like that?
Contact Alan Horne at www.jclasshulls.co.uk as it is one of his boats and he is very helpful.
Impressive!!🤗
wonderful!!
Lovely
Nice video
Thanks, definitely has some potential for something : )
The launch is beautiful, the yacht stunning! It's the first time I've seen a model "camera chase boat" used like this, and I'm impressed. Great videography and production. Note to anyone who hasn't watched it yet: There is no narrative, so you can mute the muzak if you too find it irritating.
Lovely Yacht. And a blue ensign as well :-)
Nicely done, great videoing! What a beautiful yacht!
Thank you, I agree, not too shabby for a first attempt. Looking forwards to playing some more at some stage
I doesn't get any better than that!
Martin, Truly graceful boats.
beautiful!
Sehr schön, endlich mal action auf dem Wasser 😊
Lucky you kept the mast high!🤭
So much going on - I'm about to build a 60" J and whilst keeping it simple, would like to add the backstay. How well does it work, especially the Actuonix servo and its ability to hold position? And given the J is a wet boat, is water ingress through the rear tube a problem?
Hello, great idea to keep it simple which is what I will do on my next one, lessons learned. In my opinion the movable backstay is a huge help when rigging and on the water as I can flatten the mainsail while tightening up the forestay and seems it to work well on a beat while slackening off seems to help when on a run. The Actuonix servo is more than powerful enough to fold the boat in half and locks in position with no electrical load.....once locked it will NOT move. I raised the lead out for the backstay about 25mm above the deck and could not say if water gets in there or not but the hatches lead to the biggest ingress of water as I don't think I did a particularly good job on the seals. The actuator I used is the "Actuonix L16 actuator 50mm 150:1 6V rc control linear actuator"
@@chinachile Thanks - very helpful. nb, on a 48" I built a couple of years ago I used silicone bath seal on the rear hatch - can access by cutting the sealant with a sharp nife, but rare that I need to. On the front hatch I placed a thin pieve of ply (1/64th) right over the hole, under the hatch. This is sealed again with silicone bath seal. Inset into this ply is a IOM type access lid (sailsetc2). I can access the battery through this, and leavce it open to air. But the whole thing is just about 100% watertight.
@@chinachile I actually love the systems you have built into the boat. But on th ebackstay in particular, I found an excellent review of the Actuonix L16 series on You tube called "Test of Actuonix L16 linear actuator". It did show one possible issue - which may have related to the individual unit having a fault. The test unit tended to oscillate around the 'set' position. This did settle down after a while in most instances. But on the plus side it had very good 'hold' once settled. I've asked for other experience with it (Facebook). Did you experiment with any alternative servos?
A footnote. Excellent service from Acturonix. Answered my question on this in 30 minutes. Put simply, the hold force (Backforce in their terminology) is about 50% of the power of the servo. So if the pull on the backstay exceeds the Backforce but is within the capability of the servo's power. Each time it reaches the set position power goes off and it moves. Power comes on to correct - and so on. Oscillation. Martin overcame this with a simple one pulley mechanism inside. I'm thinking of two pulleys outside, one fixed to the deck and another to the backstay. Should look good, reduce the strain on the servo to 25% and also fascillitate a through deck water resistant pulley because the force is minimised. Still Martins brainchild, just my variation on a theme.
Hi where can I buy the J class please
This is where I got my hull and basic kit from: www.jclasshulls.co.uk/model-range/nottingham-60 The hull moulding is a work of "lightweight art" and the results on the water speak for itself.
Looks gorgeous…….👌
I have to agree, she might be a bit heavy but goes really well with a bit of wind in her sails.......... eats up our little lake in no time.
Ciao Martin, eccellente navigazione. Bravissimo.
Just trying to get my head around this is causing a migraine, god knows what it did to you….. looks awesome though 👍👍👍
All joking aside, I was recovering from a pretty serious head injury when I strung the boat up but had enough nous to record my madness. It sort of makes sense to me but I will do it differently and a bit more orderly next time : )
@@WestburyDF65races-fb1bf funny you should say that…….. I’m recovering from a pretty serious head injury too !!! Just got my first two rc yachts as part of my therapy! I’m planning on building a J class once things are a bit more settled, head wise…. Hope your feeling better after the tbi……
The J class boats just look sublime….. and these two are no exception 👍👍👍
Looks gorgeous…… and sails beautifully. Hopefully build one myself in the not too distant future 👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Alan's Horne's hull kits are lovely and sail really nicely, I am a very happy customer.

This radio looks like an Airbus Dashboard! The way you trim the big Genoa, the timing, this is just so realistic! Wonderful. Now you only need a (very) big balloon jib🤩
Old school Graupner an old mate from about 15 years ago, love it👌
you need a longer lens, is that on your gopro, I wish my df 65 could reach those speeds you will have to give my some lessons
Sorry only GoPro footage...its too easy...just set and forget and get on with racing.
Wow. They're wizzing along. Great propellers!
The camera never lies😉
