    Is there a reason you chose Hardie vs Durock? Did the additional support with plywood help or no? Would you make those same choices again?

    • @matt_n_kat_things
      @matt_n_kat_things Před 7 dny

      I believe Hardi was the brand available at the time. No preference for me. The extra plywood was more about overall thickness than strength if I remember correctly. The things i would do differently- a slightly wider back form to allow moving the screed back and forth over top of cement. Next - I would have dropped some small metal rebar in the skinny section in front of sink. I have a small crack that has developed. Hard to see but there. Overall still happy. Just installed butcher block in another kitchen - a whole new experience. Hope that helps. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

      Yes. The small strip of concrete in front of the sink. I had used the fiberglass mesh all over the project. I would imbed some steel rebar/wire instead to add strength to this skinny section. I did have a small crack develop in that area. Hardly visible but there. Truthfully I can’t say it was the mesh’s fault. I'll agree, the sketches are very useful. I'm just finishing an IKEA build myself. I got lucky though: I didn't need to do any big closeouts. Where my primary runs come together, there's a sink near the corner on one leg, and the stove (lined up with the vent duct) on the other leg, so I couldn't use an IKEA corner cabinet. Instead I made one by using a 36" wide cabinet, having one door obstructed by the cabinet going in the other direction, and adding a post in the middle so the door that does open hinges at the corner, not at the stove (which would make access to the cabinet tougher). The way things ended up, I had a 1/2" extra on either side of that corner.... very tight but it worked.

    • @matt_n_kat_things
      @matt_n_kat_things Před rokem

      Wow. Sounds like a very creative solution. I am not in love with my IKEA corner cabinet. I love the lazy Susan and the space - but the hinging doors seem a bit heavy for the provided hinges and they have had to adjust them once. Overall still very happy. I am getting to the other kitchen in this duplex project and am considering building my own cabinets this time 😳. We will see. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

    I hate Ikea kitchen cabinets. Couldn't wait to get them out of my life. Way too many reasons for my hate. First, their particle board is incredibly cheap. God forbid you get any of that board wet, water will destroy it, turning it to dust. Second, the melamine coating is very difficult to cut without chipping. Better have super-fine, high quality tools, and tape those cuts. Third, their white melamine discolors so quickly, especially if you cook. It yellows badly. They change their styles too often. If you need to do simple replacement, you have to buy a whole new kitchen to get things to match. Have I mentioned how much I hate Ikea kitchens?

    • @matt_n_kat_things

      I see you definitely do not like them :-) They have worked very well for me. The thing that convinced me was looking at Ikea kitchens in Europe that have 10+ years on them. All that I have seen have stood up very well. Nearly all consumer - non custom- cabinets are made from the same chip board - but are not 3/4” thick like Ikea. Water is something that has to be considered even with solid wood cabinets. In the end I get it - they ain’t for everyone. Thanx for the comments. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

    On the cabinet to the wall trim/filler, what if you were to bring the side panel out further and put the trim between the panel and the wall so you could hide you pin nails in the same manner that was done for the filler between the cabinets. seems like it would be a more consistent look? also, do the same for the upper cabinet to the wall. Do you see any pitfalls to that idea? i'm about to start installing this system and thanks for the usefull info.

    • @matt_n_kat_things
      @matt_n_kat_things Před rokem

      Richard - thank you for the comment. I certainly understand what you are saying - there was an opportunity for me to make the two trim pieces more uniform as you described. Honestly it just didn’t occur to me at the time. Good news is that with the micro sized pin nails - the nails are nearly invisible just a few feet back. As far as trimming the uppers - I did consciously decide not to do that. I held a mock-up of a trim profile in place and IMO it made the cabinet look off balance and non-symmetrical since only the wall side would have the trim. The resulting gap and floating look appealed to me in the end. All the best on your project. Matt & Kat (Things).

    How are the cabinets handling the weight now that it's been a year or so?

    • @matt_n_kat_things
      @matt_n_kat_things Před rokem

      No issue with the cabinets and the weight. I don’t think the weight on my pour is much different than a granite installation (?). I do have a small hairline crack in the thin section of countertop between the front of sink and front edge of countertop. No compromise in structural integrity- hardly noticeable. If I were doing it again I think I would reinforce that area with metal rebar vs the fiberglass mesh.

      I did want to follow up with one new point. After your question I did investigate a bit further and I noticed that countertop end all the way to the right closest to entry door was a bit out of level - slightly sloping down toward front of cabinets. I took the snap on kick molding off and realized one of the plastic legs that supports the front of the cabinets was a bit loose. They screw out longer to adjust the height. I think what might have happened is the weight of the counter made that plastic screw adjustment “jump a thread” - basically making it a fraction of an inch shorter. Could possibly have been normal expansion/contraction from temp - but I think it jumped. I cut a 4x4 1/16 longer than the height under the cabinet - set it behind the plastic leg (after I retightened the leg) - jacked up the front edge of the cabinet - slid the 4x4 in - and let the weight off the leg. Ain’t moving now. Bottom line is that it might be worth it to add some additional blocking under the cabinets in a few places as a back up to the plastic legs. Kody Harvey (CZcams) goes as far as bypassing the legs all together and builds a wooden base to set the cabinets on. Hope this makes sense. All the best. Matt & Kat (Things)
