The "Last" Lecture 2022-05-04
This is the last lecture I ever gave as a professor at James Madison University. It's a summary of the lessons I've learned as a professor, specifically that grades suck, and that we'd all be much better off without them.

6.5mm by 4.4mm barrel plug , I want to replace it with a L or 90 degree plug head. As simple as cutting the old head off and soldering to the new head?
Very helpful

What thickness acrylic should you buy to make windows for an architectural model? Does any acrylic work?
Oh my god that is gorgeous. I’ve been wanting one. Where is yours from?
DIY. See the link in the description. Thanks!
Technically the male is female and the female is male with these, it's one of those situations where the plug has a hole and the socket has a pin. On the plug the positive conductor is a recessed hole to avoid casual short circuit. Edit: whoops someone already made this comment
Great video. I like your review of the process. The only thing I didn't like was the use of github issues with clickup tasks, that is just work duplication without value, I recommend use only clickup as the source of planning and work.
this video was appreciated

Hello Morgan, I am currently using GitLab. Are the process for GitHub and GitLab same or not?
Do you mind linking which part you used? these look lovely
I know this will sound counter-intuitive but I am trying to figure out how to wire a DC Jack with 3 pins providing 12V AC AC to a screw terminal with 3 terminals labeled AC/GND/AC. It’s not clear if I need 2 or 3 wires to provide a ground connection to the terminal and it’s also not clear if the barrel Jack even provides a ground terminal. The internet suggests one of the pins on the Jack is for an internal battery to switch power to the battery when you pull the male power Jack out. Any advice?
Caveat: I am NOT an electrician, just a hobbyist, so if there's a chance of starting a fire or damaging expensive equipment, I would seek more expert advice on this. That said, to complete an electrical circuit you need two wires (positive and neutral), and for the ground to do its thing you also need a wired connection to the earth, so I think you'd need three wires for this. This was not obvious to me when I started electrical projects, but a connection to ground literally creates a continuous path through your home's electrical system to the earth. It provides some safety that large electrical surges can be absorbed by the planet itself (although NOT necessarily before destroying the devices they're attached to). I don't know anything about battery backups, but wires are wires and can carry power or signal for most any purpose. I can imagine the terminals you're using would likely have multiple different usage scenarios. I would expect that for a battery backup to work there would need to be some logical circuitry in the loop connected to your power source to switch between the battery and the continuous DC source. That would be contained within the power brick itself and there should be documentation. Bottom line, for your purposes, I'm pretty sure you need 3 wires, and you need to make sure that the correct connections are made at each end. You can pick up a cheap multimeter (e.g. amzn.to/3nw8ikl) to verify this and give you more confidence that you're not going to start a fire. Hope this helps!
Hi, Can I ask what font do you use in VS Code?

Pretty sure the male/female is actually backwards on barrel connectors. Meaning, the one that you would think is male, is actually female. Because the "female" one has that pin inside, which is what makes it male, not female. Not really here nor there, just nomenclature.
Agreed. This is a very common error, but to avoid confusion just remember that the male ALWAYS has the pin, regardless of the outer housing, which can vary a great deal according to what type of connector you are using.
That's a right tash.
Great video
Hey I was wondering could I get you to do a little project for out of acrylic
What type of machine is this and where to buy
This video needs more views. It’s really good.
What is the name of the laser a d can we buy the laser module separately
Hello. Was there an assist gas being utilized? Or shop air?
No, but there is an exhaust fan that vents the fumes to the outside
Thanks Morgan!
Where can I buy a laser cutter? Does a small one exist? I am just wanting one to make small pieces of jewelry with acrylic and I don't know where to begin. Thanks

Not sure if I missed it in the video, but how thick is the material you're cutting?
It's been awhile but I think it's 1/8" in (3.175 mm)
@@MorganBenton thanks a lot! I’m surprised you answered so quickly
Haha, I get notified whenever anyone comments 😄
fantastic vid, thanks a lot!
Awesome. Thank you.
I absolutely loved your lecture, please do more. Many thanks for that.
What a fine mustache you got there
Note: if you have too long of a conductor, it may contact ground inside the barrel... or maybe I burnt the plastic with my soldering gun... neither of which is good. Also, the sauder may not bond with the steel... it could still mechanically hold itself there if you plan it like you did. I heatshrink the ground for extra protection and heat shrink over the screwtop strain reliever. I've been using a heat gun... but lighter might be more accurate, thanks!
Great tip with the dish soap.
Why there’s a macaroni and some melted cheese inside the machine? :D

is this co2 or fiber laser?
CO2
90W CO2 laser
@@patrickalvarado7687 Hello, dear friend, if you are interested in CO2 laser machine, please add my Whatsapp:+86-13156182531 I will give you the machine details and a quote
Little tips like that dish soap one are absolutely priceless
What wattage laser is this? And presuming CO2?
Good lecture. I'd like to see another based on irregular or inconsistant rewards after stimulus. Sometimes a reward; sometimes no reward. And how this applies to dopamine/serotonin firing.
you have food in the machine
french fries lol
3:08 there is a piece of peanut or something at the upper left corner, I'm wondering someone dropped it or a mouse brought it there.
lol, it's actually a lump of white grease.
The voice of the cameraman seems to be Mike Mackenzie of C.E.M. There were 2 useful takeaways for me in this video: 1) Use full power to cut fast enough to not heat the rest of the material (which causes deformation/ridging) and 2) applying dishwashing soap to both sides and letting it dry before lasering. I will try "clearcoat" sheeting (which isn't clear BTW) instead as this also provided a barrier and avoids the evenness and drying issues of soap.
didn't he use coreldraw?
Yes, that's the software on the computer attached to the laser cutter. However, I drew the designs on Illustrator at home before bringing them to the lab.
@@MorganBenton I see thank you so much for answering. :)
What are the specs for laser?
Tim is awesome
Great video, I was wondering if you could help me with a few questions. My intentions are to create what looks like a cut in Acrylic but is more closer to just an internal scar that is foggy and glows like a ribbon in the Acrylic when lit. Can this be accomplished with less power and faster speeds? If this is not possible how thin can the laser cut be so it is almost invisible when viewed from the cut direction yet will glow when light is shown in the Acrylic. Thanks
Great question! I have no idea what the answer is, but I'm super curious to find out.
@@MorganBenton Thanks for the reply, I've been looking into it for about a week still no answers. Do you have any ideas on who to ask?
There are 2 kinds of acrylic; cast and extruded. Cast acrylic engraves white while extruded engraves clear. You can raster the acrylic for the image, and use cast or extruded for the visual effect.
Hi, thanks for the video. Which kind of laser is ? Diode ? CO2 ? thanks a lot.
90W CO2
Morgan Benton thanks !
Thanks for the video, but what is the secret at the end, you speak to fast for me, I'm german.
waldner62 The "secret" mentioned is to cover the acrylic in dish soap before you cut it to prevent it from getting cloudy. You can then wash it after you're done.
Thank you very much for the fast information, I will try it.
Where did I get the frames for the glasses?
Jovita castelan a random costume shop in Tokyo. Don't even really remember where it was
