When Chicago and Detroit were invented, Cleveland was bound to fail. Canadian cities Toronto, etc. were coming on hot and a dowdy Ohio city fell by the wayside. Mobsters still sucked on the corpse but Cleveland became "the mistake on the lake".

Thank you for this well researched and documented video about the story of the Pere Marquette 18. The second mate, Walter Brown, was my great-grandfather. At the time the Pere Marquette sunk, and my great-grandfather died, his wife had a 4 year old son, also named Walter who was my grandfather and a 3 week old daughter. She waited for him on the Ludington pier that morning but of course he never returned. I have heard about this story from my mother since I was a child and did more research on it myself, reading several books and online articles, when I got into studying my familiy's ancestry. And, I've shared it with my own children. My son has especially taken and interest in his great-great grandfather Brown's story. Thank you again for telling this story. Linda Avery

Where was the Edward l.Reyerson getting unloaded when it was put into service around 2007 or around that time? It needs dockside gear. So does the Sherwin although I doubt it will ever see service again.

I guess it's just me, but it seems a little eerie to take a piece of equipment that was involved in so many people dying and not just destroy it and forget about it.

You should do a documentary on the flour mill in the flats. It closed in 2020. The way they explained it was a mix of covid and a small railcar bridge that brought the wheat in that would cost $750,000 to update. 1635 Merwin avenue. We made white flour for Orlando which has a bakery in Cleveland among many others nearby. As well as animal feed for farms. They used to deliver the wheat by large ship in the early 1900s. Last flour mill along the Cuyahoga river. I was glad to be a part of it. They still have rings on one of the buildings where you would tie up your horse.

They would have likely had a preservation order/grade listing in the UK 🇬🇧 (industrial heritage is often protected as "cultural heritage, so it's sad to see America's forgetfulness 😢)

Just discovered your channel, and it was interesting to find out that this crash happened in Steuben County, where I just moved. Looks like my regional history research has begun!

My dad, uncles and grandfather all worked for Sherwin Williams, just down the block from this "castle"... At least that's what I thought it was when I was a kid in the early 70s... I was in and out of that beautiful building countless times, whenever I "went to work" at the old Sherwin Williams Building just beyond the castle. Speaking of the old Sherwin Williams Building, wow, was that ever a beautiful structure! I remember well the front doors and their ornate grates... One giant door had a wrought iron monkey in a tree on it, the monkey was reaching for a cicada bug in another wrought iron tree on the other massive door. I've always wondered what ever happened to those magnificent pieces of artwork... If I didn't know any better, I'd bet they were just razed into the ground along with the rest of that majestic building. If I remember correctly, I think I was told that those particular doors and many other interior appointments in the old Sherwin Williams Building, were made by Louis Comfort Tiffany. And remembering the "castle" Train Station... Even as late as 1973-75, I remember all of the original woodwork in the building still being incredibly presentable. I wonder what it's like today?

There is so much history in Cleveland. I heard they had a rather busy interurban rail way in its day!

At least one could have been saved. They could have transported it to a park someplace as history. This is how we treat America!

It would be awesome to see one in person. Here in Central CA there are a few bucket links from the gold dredged that chewed up the rivers in search of gold. Not on the same scale though

There are late 30s and 40s movies that the Hulett were was in, the movie character operated it in the control room that was twenty feet above the bucket with the controls and the operator moved up and down with the bucket . You changed the workers when the retracted to dump bucket into rail cars . I forget the name of the movie lots of actual work shots actors had to learn to operate machine..

I'm in the UK and found out about Hulett unloaders a few years ago and was fascinated by them. Sad to hear they are to be scrapped. One should be saved for posterity, huge thing to move and reassemble though.
