Welcome to Retromade, your pop culture rewind.
In this biweekly show, I'll be exploring the best of the 80s & 90s in a "VHS time capsule" of sorts. I'll be joined by totally awesome guests to cover iconic movies of the time grouped in thematic seasons (stay tuned for the Season 1 theme). As we break down the movie, we also explore the moments that shaped our childhoods - the TV shows, music, fashion, cartoons, toys, and other cultural trends that defined the year in which each movie was released.
Movie themes range from John Hughes to mob movies to ridiculous (but fun) action flicks, to cult-classics. The unforgettable TV shows include the likes of The Cosby Show, Cheers, The Golden Girls, Friends, and Seinfeld. We’ll discuss why these blasts from the past continue to resonate with us today.
And remember…be kind, rewind.

I still don't want the new Road House but I can still try to appreciate some of it. Like I said, they "tried" to do something interesting with the fight scene CGI. BTY, I've never heard of Winter People! I feel so enlightened! This is like Kurt Russell Nirvana! -Jamie
Yeah the Road House remake sounds like it might be a tad divisive. Yeah, no one's heard of Winter People, seemingly ;)
i was 12 when this movie came out, and I remember telling my dad i didnt wanna see it (for whatever reason) but after he talked me into it and i saw it, i was hooked and returned to see it 4 or 5 times in the theater! Captain Ron has been a very close and dear movie of mine all my life!!! around that time i was also recording movies like that and 3 amigos, back to the future, vacations, on Audio cassette tape to listen to on trips or if i was in bed.. it was very relaxing to have your eye closed and picture the scenes in your head! im always quoting this movie and adding their clips in my Vlogs. thanks for posting this!
It's a surprising lil gem. I love your love of movies! Glad you liked this episode; hope you'll check out some of the others - a whole season on Kurt & Patrick ;) Thanks for watching.
How have I never heard of this movie?? Seems like I wouldve seen this at some point. Google says it grossed 214 million so that's not unknown
It's not readily available to stream...I think I found it on CZcams. It's DEF worth a watch - wild, crazy, silly, but Patrick is phenomenal as always!
Jackson is such a goon. He was like, "yeah, I can totally get us back if we go through the Stargate". Then they go through and want to go back and he's like, "well I left out eh HUGE ASSUMPTION that there would be symbols and stuff on this side and it isn't here so we're screwed". If I were Colonel O'Neil, idda shot Daniel in the face right there. 🔫
🤣
I remember going to the cinema with some friends to watch Stargate. We were only lukewarm on the movie and I never really watched the series that came from it. But would be fun to rewatch this one after all this time. Congrats to the channel-anniversary!
Thanks so much!!!
FRIENDS! My favorite sitcom ever! Also, Will & Grace - loved it! The song, "Truly, Madly, Deeply" brings back some college memories for me, AND MEATLOAF! As usual, enjoyed listening to/watching your nostalgic rewind info on YOUR podcast! :) Will have to re-watch the movie (it's been a LONG time; probably since it first came out) as I don't expect to see a whole movie on a podcast and I appreciate the fun facts and backstories of the movies you cover, as well as the discussions between you and your guest hosts! :)
1998 definitely brought back memories!! It was my first viewing of this movie. Thanks for watching!
Jake was nice to look at, but it didn't seem like Road House to me.
100%
Oh yeah 😆 the official German title of "Escape from NY" was/is "Die Klapperschlange" i.e. "The Rattlesnake". Weird movie, supposedly dark but also fun in an 80s nostalgia way. I still like it.
Haha, "Rattlesnake" at least makes sense...the name "Snake Plissken" was changed to "Hyena" for the Italian release - what the heck?! ;) I like a weird Carpenter movie, and always love his team-ups with Kurt. Thanks for watching!
Someone needa call Animal Services about Conor McGregor's gerbil. That can't be legal! face-fuchsia-poop-shape
Thanks for hanging out with us Katie. Great times. We're still flabbergasted you watched this twice! RESPECT!
Haha, like you said - I suffer for the craft! ;)
THIS IS BULLSHIT! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SHOW US THE BLOODY MOVIE AND NOT YOUR CRAP TALKING. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
Good show you guys! "Smoke show" ??????? Funny!
Thanks for listening! I mean, he is a smoke show, right?!!! ;)
new product idea: Patrick Swayze's coursettes for men.
"You, too, can look like Johnny Castle...for just $79.99" 🤣
The memories you ladies have!!! Wow! Patty Smyth's song with Don Henley is SO good. Entertaining; thanks, Katie & Shannon!
Shannon had a great memory! Me...not so much ;) Thanks for your support!
Ah, Saved By the Bell; so cheesy, yet one of my favorite after school shows to watch! Nickelodeon and the slime! Life Goes On, The Wonder Years, & Perfect Strangers - I forget about all of these shows until you rewind! :) MEATLOAF - I STILL love that song and many of his others! I learn so much from your podcasts! : ) Fun episode!
I loved all the afternoon shows after school! Aww, thanks - glad I'm "educational" ;) haha. Thanks for listening!
No Swayze skin, no bueno... but the stash is legit!
I'm sayin ;) I think I've determined he can do no wrong!
Oh, Mama's Family! Loved it! I didn't know Betty & Rue left to do Golden Girls (even better!)! Emory has my "Glynnis", my Cabbage Patch Kid! I think you're right about "Uptown Girl" with Billy Joel & Christy Brinkley. Pat Benatar's music is still phenomenal. "Islands In The Stream" - rarely hear it but freaking love that song! I have not seen this movie, but your beginning description of Silkwood, has some similarities to Erin Brockovich (or really, E.B. has similarities to Silkwood). **I wrote the Erin Brockovich part before the end where you bring it up! ;)
Fun memories, right?! Yep, it is E.B. - esque - you should get it from your library. Thanks for tuning in!
80’s and 90’s were the best time to watch tv!!! Loved who’s the boss, cheers and Golden Girls. So many good shows during this era. I miss it. I am even a fan of The Waltons, Dr Quinn Medicine woman and Little House on the prairie. Also, can’t forget I love Lucy…. ❤️🥰 I have a huge collection of shows/series and it’s all during this era lol. Loving this podcast. Brings back so many memories.
I miss it too...thus the reason I started the podcast - to trip down memory lane! Glad you're enjoying it - I have plenty more where that came from ;) Thanks for listening. I'm always open to feedback.
@@RetromadePodcast I loved it! 🥰 Still half way through it. I also watched coach & family matters. I was born in the 80’s and so I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s shows. 🤗😊
Same! Born in 80s and grew up in both. My show is ALL 80s & 90s. Curious to see how you like other episodes ;)
@@RetromadePodcastDefinitely will be checking them out. 🤗😊
They're, like, fab Aquanet mullets and they are glorious... on them.
Glorious - that's the perfect word for it, and yes - on them! ;)
FRIENDS! Still my favorite and named our boy kittens Joey & Chandler! Kiss From A Rose by Seal is THE WORST! I cannot change it fast enough when I hear it! I do, however, freaking LOVE Waterfalls Album, by TLC! Fun movie and entertaining rewind!
Entirely agree! Thanks for listening :)
Kris Kristofferson in Convoy was pretty hot. ♨
Good call...I actually haven't seen that - on the list now ;)
@@RetromadePodcast And then the C.W. McCall song will live forever in your head.
😳
Dennis Hopper in "Space Truckers". We'd marry him!
Oooh, I really like Dennis Hopper - I'll check that one out (my ever-growing list ;))
I too, am glad Cage was not in this movie. Your episode makes me want to watch this movie again; it's been A LONG TIME. What a fantastic cast! Loved your beginning discussion - Three's Company, Mama's Family, Webster, Inspector Gadget, and WWF/WWE! Some awesome 80s songs, too! The 80s were the best!
Yes, you're due for a rewatch. Thanks, I agree, all the shows and songs were just better in the 80s!
I was so obsessed with 3rd Bass just for that one song. But back then, as you know, you only heard a song whenever it was played on the radio or the music video was shown on TV, if you didn't buy the cassette tape or CD. I thought the guy in 3rd Bass with the cane was so cool, lol. We are about the same age. I was 9 in 1991.
We are about the same age - great sub-generation, if you ask me ;) Oh the days of watching MTV waiting for your favorites to come on or being ready to tape a song from the radio!
I think this movie was perfectly casted, but I think that Martin Short could have played Captain Ron. I thought he was handsome in this movie, and he looked pretty fit shirtless (the shower scene). All he needed was an accent, a different hairstyle, and a five o'clock shadow, and he could have pulled it off. Watch "Cross My Heart" if you want to see Martin Short in a more studly role. And Kurt Russell played the jealous husband in "Unlawful Entry," which came out the same year as "Captain Ron." I think the original casting would have worked well, too.
Actually, you have a good point. While I haven't seen "Cross My Heart," I have seen (and will cover this season) "Unlawful Entry." Martin short is a perfectly fine looking man, I've just never thought of him as "sexy" in any way...but you brought up some good points - thank you!
Оба великолепны! Просто у Патрика Суэйзи другое амплуа.в котором очень красиво проявляется его физическое совершенство.пластика. Очень был красив до болезни. Светлая память неповторимому Патрику!
I agree!
A shipboard boozie brunch with Captain Ron and Patty Smyth?!... (as real as it may seem, it was only in my dreams 😥)
Haha, that would be a wild brunch! ;)
What a wicked movie!! 😂😂😂 I remember renting this back in the day, we watched it Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday morning!! Such a fun watch!!
Wow! But I recall maximizing my rental days with multiple viewings of a few movies as well - not Captain Ron, though ;)
Deanton! Could be about Deanton, a studly, blue collar philosopher who not only helps wealthy amnesiacs clean up their bars, but clean up their acts as well. I'd watch that!
Oooh, I like the celeb combo name, "Deanton" :) Yes, yes, yes - I'd watch that too!
"Is this the line for the food?" hehehe.😋
Great show, right?! ;)
I also turned 15 in September '95 :-) This movie is super funny, imo. Very good!
Oh really? Cool. It IS a funny movie, right?! Thanks for watching!
Kurt and Patrick should have done a brothers separated at birth action movie. I have the whole plot and all the action sequences in my head right now! -Jamie
Jamie! Yassssss!!!! I want that movie - write it anyway.
Such fond memories of roller-skating rinks, and Starship's "We Built This City" = hand in hand with Saturday skating at the roller rink in our small little town! I vaguely recall this from H.S., but that was just too long ago! Lol! Patrick shines, per his usual! Nice job, Katie!
Haha; I have odd specific memories from 30 years ago, but couldn't tell you what I did yesterday ;) Thanks for watching!
Nice combo of convo & perspective with Katie, Chad & Lizzie! Such an iconic, classic movie from my childhood. One of these days I'll show my daughter!
Thanks! Aww curious what she'll think of our Mr. Patrick Swayze ;)
This takes me back to watching TV with my granny in the early evening. 'North and South' was quite popular in Germany and it must have been the first time I ever saw Patrick Swayze.
I didn't realize how popular this was in Europe! Yay, I hope it made you a Swayze fan ;) Thanks for watching!
I though tI had seen this movie, but alas, I have not! Another to put on my watch list. Loved the Wrestling references, ANNIE!!!!, and Punky Brewster! Nice job; fun episide!
You should! OMG, Annie is soooo good! Thanks for watching!
Wait, Kirstie Alley is British?
Haha, no but there are quite a few Brits in this playing Southerners! I love that kinda stuff.
I just sent an email with thoughts but I'll add some comments here. 1. The friendship between Orry and George is indeed the most heartfelt one ever portrayed on film. 2. Another reason why this series is great is because it's a romance. The Romance as a genre has more or less disappeared nowadays. Not romance as in couples falling in love, but as in humans fighting for ideals, choosing between family and principles, sacrificing themselves for others or the greater good, overcoming terrible odds.... That's drama. And of course it's still done today but not with the same flair as these modern classic ones.
Love your email - I'll read it next episode - thanks! You always make extremely good points.
OMG! I can’t tell you how much I LOVE watching this again!!! PATRICK SWAYZE!!! 😍😍
He's just so wonderful - truly one of a kind! I've got a whole season of him ;)
Its often described as a supernatural romantic drama but I beg to differ. Its really a story of friendship. Its the bond that develops with Sam and Oda Mae. If I were the ghost, I would have let Oda Mae keep that money! 🤑💰💸
I love that take!

You totally know the song "Soldier of Love", Katie! I really love reminiscing about the tv shows, movies, songs........ Road House - I did not know it didn't have great reviews. Love this movie. Love that Dalton is a bad ass bouncer taking charge yet so small in stature! :) Patrick Swayze & Sam Elliott = Fantastic! Nice job; great episode!
Thanks for watching! You really cannot go wrong with Patrick Swayze & Sam Elliott. Go rewatch Road House ;)
@@RetromadePodcast I need to rewatch; it's been a minute!
Fun fact.... Goldie Hawn was/is amazingly popular in Sweden (my country) and her breakthrough here came with the movie Foul Play 1978. The Swedish title for this movie translates into "The girl who knew too much" (most likely because she had already starred in two movies with the word girl in the title, There's a girl in my soup, with Peter Sellers, and The girl from Petrovka) This sparked a tradition where all (or most) of Goldie Hawn's movies got a "The girl who..." title in Sweden. So Private Benjamin is called The girl who did military service. Best friends is called The girl who didn't wanna get married. Swing shift is called The girl who worked shifts. Wildcats is called The girl who brought the game. This movie, Overboard, is called The girl who went overboard. And Snatched, with Amy Schumer, is called Girl Trip. 🙂
Oh that IS fun! Thanks for sharing :)
Kidnapping amnesiacs... That's how we get our dates! ⁉
Haha, oh is that the trick? ;)
Congratulations, Doug!
