    I know this is an older video, but I love it! And so thankful for the resources. I started my daughter early with the idea of consent. I’m not a fan of family members expecting a hug/kiss from children. I don’t care who I offend, even family. I’ve had aunties, uncles, etc say “Hi! Give me a kiss!” and I immediately step in with “honey, would you like to give a hug or high five or blow a kiss?” Options for different levels of contact based on her comfortability.

    I am extremely open with my daughter and anything we come across in life. The problem we have is living in an extremely conservative area sometimes conversations happen between my daughter and her friends that her friends parents don’t want them to know about. Should I tell my daughter not to talk about certain topics with her friends that I know are super conservative or let her talk about them knowing that those parents might not allow their children around my daughter because of her knowledge? It’s so tough.

    • @MakingEverydayMagic
      @MakingEverydayMagic Před 12 hodinami

      We have been through this several times. I try to let her know that whatever topic is highly controversial. I also remind her that lots of her friends and even family do not share our stance on whatever topic. I encourage her when to be vocal, when to answer the questions, but also to remember that with some things (like SexEd, and certain holiday beliefs) that is a parent discussion. She's welcome to correct misinformation that could be harmful. The flip of this is that I know my girls and their voices can be the light! Once when we were playing at a park in our conservative area, a little boy told my daughter how great and beautiful her dress was, at 4 she was the voice that let him know that boys can wear dresses too. Maybe that little boy needed to hear that. I also try to model that just because someone doesn't believe like we do, that we can still love and respect them.

    We cover many of the social topics through books at bedtime. Our library is pretty good at getting new diverse books (or ordering books upon request). I also make remarks when we come to something mentioned in our curriculum, mainly history, about how that would have affected our life or is still affecting others in the world.

    We tried the blue one last year and we stopped after two weeks. It was too different and frustrating for my daughter. I ordered the Legacy Algebra and it was a lot better for her. I have not done a ton of research on the algebra one specifically but I switched this year and started Saxon math 8/7 prealgebra. I also have a Nicole The Math Lady subscription and it’s been a dream. My kid has been so uncomfortable with math ever since he was small and he’s finally feeling confidence. We watch her videos for one lesson on one day and do her practice problems. Then the next day he solos the “mixed problems” with my overview and I check his work. We do two lessons a week like this for a 4 day week.

    I can only speak for my child. He’s done Math U See from the beginning and is now in Algebra 2. We used the Algebra 1 Legacy because that was the format he was used to and didn’t want to do math without Mr. Demme. He did fine with no issues but my biggest suggestion is to compare both versions with your child to see which one will work best. Pick the option (whether that’s Math U See or another program) that works best for your child. There no right curriculum only the one the works best for your specific child.

    I love that you decided to take a turn to educate your children of the indigenous peoples before continuing on in your Texas history. Thank you for sharing that as more educators may follow suit. This is important to our family as we are from an indigenous nation to another part of the world, but almost all curriculums skip over our history to post-colonization times. It really leaves a hole and missing opportunities to really learn about the native cultures, languages, faiths, and traditions. Also, how they contributed to and impacted the modern culture.

If you are putting effort into your child's education and they are learning anything, it is unlikely you're failing.

      Agreed! My kiddo didn't hate math but didn't love it, but loves Denison because it gives them so much agency in their learning. I still watch everything, i still look at everything. But I'm very rarely needed and the explanations he gives imply that your kids already know the answer in a cheeky way and then goes back over it in such a simple, clean way.

  • @MakingEverydayMagic

    I feel like we are turning the corner! Someone told me that the MUS revision was to align with Common Core. I can't speak to that. How is your new year starting out? Have you identified your pain point yet?

    Happy First Day! We had an unexpected long break for late spring early summer, so we ended up starting in mid August. Of course it did not go exactly Going to plan, but that’s life. I enjoy watching your videos and this one was no exception. ❤❤❤

    My 6 year old loves history and we started Story of the World recently. We love it but it’s a lot! We definitely don’t do everything the book recommends. I love that it gives so many ideas though! I add in videos on the chapter topics because we love a video! 😅

    We quit all about reading after level 2 and switched to Ordinary Parents Guide to reading Reading. Our reasoning is AAR was just too slow and my son would prefer to get it done so we can dive deeper in other subjects. So far after 3 weeks I’m very happy with making that choice. I kept feeling the need to push through with all about reading but my son was over it. That’s just one example for us. I agree pivot or quit it.

      We are also just started out 5th year homeschooling. (7th, 4th, Kinder, a 2 yr old and 6 mo old 😅). I NEEDED this shake Shanna! 😆 I’m a huge big picture planner and my kids do NOT like to do family style learning. We are mostly utilizing Moving Beyond the Page this school year and we absolutely love it but they have sooo many projects/activities that I need to really dial it back and pick and choose. Second week in and I’m feeling the burn out start. Thank you as always for making these videos. 🩷🫶🏻🧡

    I like how simple you've made it, but I was wondering about composition. Are you incorporating any longer narrative writing? Too early for that?

    • @MakingEverydayMagic
      @MakingEverydayMagic Před 11 dny

      I did not. I think at this age, she did do a real world writing and first language lessons included with the kit. She enjoyed playing Night Zookeeper. I don't focus on formal writing until much later. We've changed things up since then and now use Michael Clay Thompson.

    I don’t understand how you have less than 10k followers. You’re an AMAZING resource. I found your channel less than a week ago and have been binging all your videos. I currently don’t have the means to homeschool (single working mom going back to college) but I’m supplementing my kindergartener’s learning afterschool. So thank, you thank you a million times for sharing your wealth of knowledge ♥️

      My daughter came home from with her first hw assignment and I was so displeased with the way they are teaching reading. We live in a great school district, one of the top public schools in our state. I went on a CZcams research deep dive so I could personal teach her how to read strictly phonics based. Schools are still teaching whole-word and guessing, with phonics sprinkled in. I was not a fan.
