Hiking a Volcano in Japanâs Northern Alps - UNREAL Day Hike in Kamikochi
Mount Yake (or Yakedake), an active volcano, looms over the Kamikochi valley, and if you hike to it's summit, you can get extraordinary views of the mountain range and valley below. We did our hike along the Shin-Nakanoyu trail, which can be accessed via car. Mt. Yake is especially great as it's one of the few mountains you can do as a day hike in the Northern Alps.

apparently in the poorer/lower ranked schools in occidental countries (largely non-secular), they still teach it was necessary for US to drop these bombs
Nice video! One quick correction though: in order to qualify for original castle status, the castle had to be built in or before the Edo period. Hirosaki Castle is one of the twelve and its keep was destroyed by fire but rebuilt in 1810. If it was rebuilt in 1869 (after the Edo period) then it would not have counted.
Hello, this is my first time watching a video. Thank you for choosing Japan out of many countries and for moving to Japan. I think there are many rules that I find it difficult to get used to the rules of this country, but I pray for the safety of my life in this country from now on.
Quick question: are they tattoo friendly? Couldn't find on their website and hoping to have the chance to enjoy an Onsen experience!
Hi there! Because the baths are private onsens that means the well known tattoo bans (usually) don't apply. This (usually) only applies to public onsens - also when we were there filming the staff running the Inn were absolutely delightful and very open minded people. I think you'd safely be able to book in and have a fantastic Onsen experience :)
Thank you for sharing your video
Thank you for your video
Thank you for sharing the information and I plan on visiting this year in September October not a real hiker as far as quick, nice and slow laugh out loud
You're welcome! Thank you so much for watching & commenting, hope you have a fantastic trip!
Wow! so beautiful.. which time of year did you visit?
Thank you so much for watching & commenting! This was filmed in the later half of October, which we might add is one of the best times to visit & see the beauty of Japan in our opinion.
I'm going to be visiting the Hokkaido to Tohoku regions on my trip in September, so I hope to get in at least one or two day hikes. Thanks for the video! I'll have to see if any of these hikes are within my route. For sure Asahidake is on my list of things to do in Hokkaido
That's awesome! We did a month-long trip in Hokkaido in September a few years back and it was one of the best trips we've done. Hope you also have a fantastic time! Unfortunately, we didn't cover Tohoku or Hokkaido much in this video. Some other places we really enjoyed in Hokkaido though for nature and hiking were Shiretoko National Park and Akan-Mashu National Park. In Tohoku, Oirase Gorge is lovely, as well as some of the mountains in Yamagata like Mt. Zao, Mt. Gassan and Yamadera Temple. But anywhere you travel, you'll definitely have a great time!
Looks amazing!
One of the prettier hikes we've done! Thank you for watching đ
Hi guys I trust you are both well? I can understand why the car park was full so early, what a beautiful area and trail to hike. I personally prefer less sunnier weather for hiking, but thatâs only because Iâm not brilliant in the sun lol đ having said that I was out yesterday (Wednesday) with my veterans group doing what has now become an annual day hike in the Peak District and Mam Tor (one of the more famous hill peaks in the area) looked rather majestic with the mist on top of her. The volcano looked really âmysteriousâ as you climbed and then seeing the scenery as the mist cleared was stunning, definitely agree with Roy, beyond words. Congratulations on bagging your 18th â100â, those sort of heights seem a world away for me being in England/UK and I hope to be able to do one of those hikes for myself one day in the future. This was a beautiful hike and having the backdrop of the volcanic landscape really added to it too. As always your camera and drone work was amazing đ Thank you for sharing this incredible experience with everyone guys. Best wishes to the two of you and have a great weekend. đŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó żđŠđșđŻđ”đ
Hello, hello! Roy's certainly with you on the less sunny weather (he turns as red as a lobster if in the sun for too long). Oh we just Googled Mam Tor and the photos of the stone path and the rolling grassy hills look absolutely gorgeous. As you mention the scenery is quite different to the volcanic (more resembling Mars) hike we just did. But more than anything glad to hear you had a nice time out with the group, sounds like a blast! đ Thank you so much for your high praise đ Best wishes to you and the family, and also sending wishes for a lovely weekend back your way!
@@RoyandAimee hiya guys thank you for the lovely reply. Thatâs also lovely to hear you checked out Mam Tor, itâs such an iconic part of the Peak District and also within a few miles of that area is so many options for walks, also wild swimming which is rather refreshing lol đ Thank you it was a great day with the group and fantastic to be out in the Peaks again, I managed another nice walk last week to White Edge which is just over from Curbar Edge which is a very well known climbing area and excellent for hiking too. Thank you as always for taking time out of your busy lives to âchatâ đ itâs always genuinely appreciated and its great to see the two of you are enjoying getting out and showing everyone some incredible places a little more off the beaten track. Have a great day and weekend guys đ
Whatâs an S?
In a previous video we did called "10 BEAUTIFUL Day Hikes in Japan" we did a tier list rating of day hikes. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what "S" means (a quick google says "Superior", but it's commonly known as a ranking/tier which is even BETTER than A tier đ€©
May we know the name of the parking where you parked your car?
Absolutely! If you pop "Mt. Yake Trail Head" into Google Maps, it should be first result. But just to be sure, the address is: Kamikochi Azumi, Matsumoto, Nagano 390-1520. If it's a weekend or a public holiday I would estimate the car parking spots will be full by 5 or 6am, so be careful there! If you're thinking of going, we're sending you the best of luck for a nice day hike!
@@RoyandAimee thank you for the details.Youâre so kind!
Oh, wow, that were beautiful views! What I nice hike. I also like to go hiking on my birthday - but in my area it's just a low mountain range. So no need for a tent - you always get back home. ;)
Hahah yes! Another birthday hike enthusiast! Although Roy would certainly agree the way you do it is the better way to go đ Thank you so much for watching & enjoying the views with us!
Hi Roy & Aimee, I just finished the nakasendo trail from Nagiso-Tsumago-Magome, Now I know what Roy feeling doing it not starting the hike in Magome but it also An S from me, I will try Mount Yake next time, thank you from creating wonderful videos, itâs very informative.
Oh my gosh! Congrats on ticking off such an amazing hike! So glad to hear that you think it's an S tier as well đ Wait, if you just finished it that means you would've done it pretty much in peak summer! I bet you were eyeing off that lovely coolriver for a quick swim! But also glad to hear that we weren't the only ones feeling like starting at Nagiso is a bit rough, but man, finishing in the beautiful Magome is pretty nice too, right? Woo! Good luck on Mount Yake, we hope you have a wonderful time & get that perfect weather for those Kamikochi views! Take care & be extra careful of heat stroke đŠ Also thank you so much for the lovely comment & watching, we'll keep pumping the videos out!
@@RoyandAimee actually I just finished it yesterday đ so many tourists and itâs a little crowded especially in Magome, Tsumitai Soba after the long hiking is very rewarding, I also had the chance to experience the tea house, I beat the heat 38âc though I had to change my shirt like 5 times. Thank you for making video itâs guided me so well, looking forward for yours next trail adventure. Take care always and Keep Safe.
Ooh that's interesting to hear so many people are doing it in summer! Hahah that must have been a record for changing shirts - 5 times in one day đ Glad to hear you were able to experience the teahouse though and get some yummy soba! Take care!
I just found your channel and love all the outdoor content! I'm going to Japan next year from February till the end of April - so not really hiking season, but I still hope to at least travel through the mountains and if the conditions are ok, maybe hike a smaller one. Thanks for your beautiful videos! :)
Yay! Thank you so much for watching & the lovely comment. Ooh, that's a nice chunk of time, I hope you get to see lots of wonderful nature & enjoy your time in the mountains! đ
Keep up the grind guys. Your content makes me wanna move to central japan, eventually. Much love from Iwate.
Thank you again for watching & commenting! Iwate surely has just as many treasures! Japan is stunning no matter where you are :D We'll keep pumping out the videos! đȘ
Amazing landscape. Thanks so much for taking us along.
Totally agree. Thank you so much for watching! đ
Hey guys, we really enjoyed this hike with you a lot. So glad the warning level was only at 1 and you managed to climb the incredible volcano. Loved it ! Keep up the good work đ
Us too! Unfortunately we have missed out on a few volcano hikes because of level 2 restrictions, but that's okay, this time was a victory! :D Thank you so much for watching & the lovely comment! đ€
Well, Roy survived Aimee's sulphurous attack (đ), but surely it was worth it in the end, right? Have you been to the well-reknowned Kamikochi before? If you were to go, would you take on this volcano?
While Kiso-Komagatake is recommended here for a day hike, a 4-hour Shinkansen ride is awfully long by Shinkansen standards. Staying in Komagane City for a night would be a more preferable option if you're looking for a leisurely experience. And if I'm not mistaken, thereâs also a bus ride with long intervals (I got there by car, so my info might differ if youâre arriving by train) before you can ride the ropeway, so you might rush a bit if you embark from Tokyo.
Yes certainly wouldn't recommend doing Kiso-Komagatake in a day from Tokyo! The video shows hikes that can be done in a day but not necessarily hikes that can be done as day trips from Tokyo. Most of them in fact would be better if you stayed nearby the trailhead for at least one night đ Did you enjoy the Kiso-Komagatake hike?
@@RoyandAimee Yes! The beginning is quite rough but it was worth it!
Enjoyed your video, my wife and I have the same van here in Australia, no heater, we have camped in minus 3 here still ok inside the van, we are going to Japan in end of September, weâll rent a van and travel north of TokyoâŠ..cheers!
Oof, you would've needed a good layer of blankets that night! đź Wooooo! I hope you guys have the most awesome time here!
What does â3 hours return mean?â Does that mean round-trip? American asking.
Yes! It means round-trip đ

Man, Japan have amazing landscapes, God made Japan so beaitiful. So please read this, is an important message, the most important message for any person actually: We are actually fallen and corrupted creatures. We are full of injustices, wickedness, lies and evil. Every human being have the same problem, since the fall of Adam, our hearts are actually seek and go to do evil. We all say lies. We all steal something, even something small or without "importance". We all fall in sexual inmorality like having sex before marrige, or cheat your wife/husband, watch pornography, look other people with lust and corrupted desires, look them in the street, social media, internet, etc. We all hate someone in our hearts, that's actually consider to be a killer in the eyes of God. We all fail and we do horrible things in this earth. Those things I mention before are actually part of the Law of God, and WE BROKE the Law of God many many times. We are actually criminals, sinners, who made crimes against God and our neighbors. God is our Creator, He is Holy, Good and Just and He hates evil and He punish all the wicked actions of the humans beings. He establised a day when He is going to judge every human being in all the history of this Earth, the Final Day of Jugdment. We are all guilty and in that day we going to have all the consequences of our wickedness, We all deserve the eternal condenation, Hell, the Holy and Just Wrath of God, because we broke all the Law of God. We actually have a huge problem with the infinite Justice of God, and we can't escape from that destiny, we are guilty and we can't do anything to change that. We are actually lost for ever. But, God is very very Merciful and God knows we are actually lost for ever, so He did something. God the Father send His Son LORD Jesus Christ to save us. The God of Israel Himself becomes a human being, Jesus of Nazareth, and He die for us, He die for our sins. LORD Jesus in the cross take all the warth and punishment what we deserve for our sins and wickedness and He die for us He die for our sins. He paid the debt with the infinite Justice of God what we have. By His Grace we are save not by any human work of us because we only deserve hell only. That's why when you believe in LORD Jesus and His work of Salvation and Redemption you have salvation, redemption, forgiveness of sins, eternal life and reconciliation with God only by LORD Jesus. LORD Jesus was dead but He rose at the third day, and He is now sit at the right hand of God His Father but He is coming back soon to the Earth as the Supreme Judge, and He will put and end to all the wicked things and evil of the humans beings for ever, including yours if you don't repent, oh, japanese people. That's why we say to you in love and Truth, repent of your sins and wickedness and believe in LORD Jesus and His Gospel and follow Him. Without Christ you are actually lost for ever and ever. If you die, you are going to Judgement of God, and if you don't believe and follow LORD Jesus, after the Judgement you are going to the eternal condenation for ever. That's why with a great sense of urgency take this message with extreme seriously, your life and soul are in danger: you could die today at any moment, you never know. Come to Christ Jesus, without Him we are nothing and the eternal condenation is at the door. Come to Christ oh dear people. Blessings to you and your family, greetings from Chile đšđ±

Oooooooof 42 degrees isnât the summer weâre talking about out, thatâs just straight up Armageddon. Glad to hear you survived!
Great video. What month was this filmed?
Thank you for watching! This was filmed at the very end of October đ
@@RoyandAimee Thanks!! Annie and I are coming mid October to mid November so trying to judge what the weather will be like.
That's a great time to come to Japan! It'll start getting quite cool in November but if you head to lower elevations, you'll still be able to see great autumn colours and stay a bit warmer.
I absolutely love summer in Japan, coming for my fifth summer trip in two weeks for some hiking
Oh my gosh, 5th summer trip? I think weâve found someone who appreciates summer more than Roy! Hope you have a spectacular trip! âš(If you have time to share weâd love to know what youâve got planned!)
@RoyandAimee one reason is to fit around work, I'm a lecturer so can only have holidays off, but Japan is so beautiful in summer. We are doing a few hikes, Tanigawadake, Tsubakurodake, Nakasendo and Fuji for the second time
Ah that makes sense! Sounds like you've got a great trip planned out. This is our first time hearing of Tsubakurodake, we'll have to look it up. If the weather is on our side, I (Aimee) will be hiking Mt. Fuji this summer with my mum as well! Maybe we'll pass each other on the mountain đ
@RoyandAimee I chose Tsubakurodake on a friends recommendation, it looks amazing. Should be quite close to where you live now! What route is Amy taking? We did Subashiri last year and Fujinomiya this time
Yeah it looks like it's only an hour or two away from us, so it'd be a good one to do. Hope you have a great hike up it! We're also doing the Fujinomiya route đ We organised it a bit late though so we'll stay at the 7th station and then keep going up to the summit the next day, probably well after sunrise.
So scenic! Thank you.

Hi guys I trust youâre both well? He said it! Lol đ as rubbish as I am in the heat I do like sunny days, our summer this here in England/UK has been cooler than the last couple of years so we (wife and I) have enjoyed it much more. Gunma Prefecture looks to have so much variety, I think I remember you mentioning that it wasnât as popular as expected? That said it would leave more opportunities for finding less crowded places. That water looked beautiful đ that stream you were floating down was amazing too, it brought back some very happy memories from childhood. We used to go out for the day with a group of other family friends and picnic, explore the streams, etc⊠I forget the name of the area but I believe itâs not too far from where I grew up, will have to look that up. The onsen buildings and bridge look at their very best at night when lit up but thatâs my own personal preference, it does look very beautiful against the greens of trees. Very much looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos of more amazing areas that youâve discovered. Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone. Best wishes to the both of you. Hello again! Going well as always! Glad to hear itâs a much cooler year this year over there. There certainly a point where itâs just too hot to enjoy things, right? Yes Gunma is a wonderful place! Itâs got some of the nicest waterway systems and wonderful rolling hills. We really love driving through it! Ohhh, those certainly sound like happy memories floating down the river. Now that you bring it up It also reminds us of floating down the river on old tractor tubes on Royâs familyâs farm. âșïžGood memories! Totally agree with you on the onsen building looking best at night. One day we gotta stay there. But I think because of all the Spirited Away hype itâs pretty competitive to get a spot. đ Thank you again for watching! Hope you and your wife are having a wonderful weekend!
@@RoyandAimee Hi guys thank you for the lovely reply, glad to hear all is well. Yes itâs definitely much more pleasant here at the moment, temperatures have been averaging around 22 C which is much more comfortable for us lol đ Floating down a river on tubes sounds a great way to spend a few hours too, sounds very relaxing đ I can see how the onsen was said to have inspired Spirited Away, such a beautiful place. Having seen some of the onsen towns around Japan at different times of the year I definitely understand how difficult it can be to book sometimes. I imagine there are a few hidden gems that are worth exploring too. Always happy to watch and also share your brilliant videos with friends, your insights and experiences are very much appreciated and hopefully inspire others to visit some of the other areas Japan has to explore. Weâre having a nice relaxed weekend thank you, I hope your weekend has gone well too? Have a great week ahead guys. đ
22 degrees sounds beautiful haha! We'll have to wait until autumn to get those kinds of temps đ Japan has quite a few beautiful onsen towns, right? You can probably have a lot more luck if you're booking into one, even in a popular spot, on a weekday. Weekends are just always so busy with domestic tourism đ Thank you so much for such lovely words! It always inspires us to keep getting out there and filming more areas. Have a great week too!
Hi Roy and Aimee. I did this walk in April (same direction as you did). Absolutely loved it and would definitely go back.
Glad to hear that you loved it! Even going the same way as us haha đ Did you stay in one of the towns while there?
Summer in Japan - a time of year that elicits dread, instant sweating and a chorus of âatsui desu neâ (itâs hot, right?) đ Have you travelled to Japan in summer, and if so what did you do?
What day last year was this filmed?
Hi there! This was filmed the first weekend of October.
Hi have you arrived here by Shinkanzen or by Van?
We arrived by public transport đ We took the train on the Chuo line to Okutama Station and then caught a 40-minute bus to Kamosawa.
Hello! What month did you hike the Nakasendo Trail?
Hi there! We hiked it in the middle of May.
I'm sorry, but this is stupid! Not the trail... the narration.
Very honest and helpful video, thank you! Question, I see that you have done most of your central Japan hikes (Mt. Tanigawa e.g. Mt. Kiso-Komagatake) in Autumn (let's say end of Aug to early Dec). Is this because you love the Autumn colours, or is it to avoid snow in Spring? We are plannign to visit Japan either May (after Golden Week), or Oct-Nov, and I'm now curious if those hikes are less likely in May. We don't like hiking in snow with Crampons!
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching! A good amount of the hikes were done July through October. Mt. Kiso-Komagatake was the start of July, Mt. Tanigawa - September, Happo-ike and Tsugaike - the start of October. But yes you guessed right! It's mainly to avoid the snow in spring. After Golden Week though, you should be okay to hike mountains up to 2,000m without crampons. Mt. Daisen was done during Golden Week and the hike in this video: czcams.com/video/7YpYJy63n2o/video.htmlsi=PLr7MhyYlwQDK30o was also at the start of May of a ~2,000m mountain. For a lot of the hikes featured in this video, November will be too late with the first snow starting. Hope that helps!
@@RoyandAimee Very helpful thank you!
I'm a trail runner but haven't ran many mountains, do you have clothing recommendations for a late November run?
In late November, quite a few of these mountains - Mt. Kiso-Komagatake, Tsugaike Nature Garden, Happo-ike, Mt. Asahidake, Mt. Tanigawa - will have snow on them already. Some of the lower ones like Mt. Oyama and Mt. Jinba won't have snow but will probably be getting down to 5 - 10 degrees celcius during the day. We really can't comment on trail running as we've never done that before đ But if hiking them at that time, we'd usually have layers - a t-shirt, fleece and then larger jacket for near the summit.
I enjoyed watching your hiking videos in Japan. But I realised that many CZcamsrs like yourself, never indicate the exact date of the video taken but rather just the date the video was uploaded on CZcams. Or did I miss out somewhere? I apologized if I did miss out. If not, appreciate very much that you can indicate your dates on your itinerary so that we know what is the appropriate hiking dates available in Japan, as I understand March to early April may not be opened for Japan Alps hike. Iâm heading there in early April next year. Thank you guys đ
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment! Really appreciate that dates on the video could be helpful, thanks for bringing it up. Weâll try and add those in on our hiking videos from now on đ This hike was on September 14/15. Yeah for March and early April, the alps are still completely covered in snow. For that time of year, mountains up to 2,000m (6,500ft) are your best bet. The taller of those will still have some snow on top so crampons would be good to have too.

I'm curious what visa you are on to be able to live in Japan for 4 years? I want to vanlife in Japan too, but I didn't think you could get a visa for that long.
Hi there! We were first on working holiday visas, which as Australians, allowed us to live in and travel around Japan for 1.5 years. After that, we switched to working visas. So now we have our own van but weâre not living and travelling in it full-time. Usually just on weekends and sometimes working out of it during the week when work is slower đ
@@RoyandAimee ah. Thanks for the response. I think I'm too old now for the working holiday visa and I'd prefer to not work if I can avoid it. đ€Ș
i am going to japan this coming november, are these hike suitable for november like is it too cold too windy thanks.
Hi there! The ones near Tokyo - Mt. Jinba and Mt. Oyama will be okay as well as the Nakasendo trail. For the rest, theyâll be seeing snow from around mid-October onwards so not really suitable for hiking anymore. If youâre coming in very early November, the gondolas for Happo-ike are usually still going until Nov 4th.
I'll be there in November too. Gotta stay at lower elevations or bring all my snow hiking crap which is heavy.
Wow Roy has accent just like local Japanese people amazing! then I realised that actually itâs the boatman speaking behind his mask in the clip I started watching. đ
Hahaha gotta keep practicing to get to that level of native-sounding đȘ

What month did you guys do this in? We are thinking of doing the pilgrimage near the end of Feb.
We did it mid-Feb đ This past winter season there was less snow around. If you get a better season, there should be a bit more snow there in Feb.
