Jennifer Berkshire and Jack Schneider - The Education Wars: A Citizen's Guide and Defense Manual
"The Education Wars: A Citizen's Guide and Defense Manual," authored by Jennifer Berkshire and Jack Schneider, delves into the contentious nature of public education debates in the United States. The book aims to explain why there has been prolonged conflict over schools, tracing the roots of these disputes back through American history. Public education, being democratically governed in a diverse society, has naturally become a battleground for various issues such as patriotism, religion, communism, race, and gender.
Currently, the intensity of these battles is amplified by political polarization and a decline in trust in public institutions. The authors argue that these conflicts are exacerbated by influential donors who have vested interests in privatizing education. These donors promote school voucher systems, aiming to shift students from public to private schools, a move historically opposed by the American public.
Despite the bleak outlook, the book also highlights successful community efforts to support and defend public schools. The authors emphasize that public education is vital not only for learning but also as a cornerstone of democracy. They advocate for a unified defense of public schools to ensure their survival and to maintain a crucial democratic institution.

Why isn't the "socialist" argument levelled against a taxpayer funded military industrial complex that sucks trillions away from useful public infrastructure and programs that help people? (Not that I think labelling something as Socialist is intrinsically a bad thing. It's about what Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill held up as the greatest good for the greatest number).

Jennifer Brown, and other grifters like herself write nothing but books that are self-serving. Of course, she believes all the rhetoric she writes- It directly serves her interests and her ability to call herself a CEO of her one woman show. She is able to quote herself and cherry picked statistics without the burden of proof just because she says “I am a lesbian, and I think I am important. Therefore, you should hire nothing but non-contributing nonperforming people in the periphery, because even though they do not add to the gross output of your organization.” They presuppose importance simply because of what makes them different. Such logic has been debunked time and time again, but as Jennifer loves to echo: diversity is strength even if it never makes a contribution to any companies bottom line. Snake oil in a pink bottle is just as useless as any other container, and Jennifer struggles to argue that there is something of value in it when there simply is not.

As a Canadian, I feel your book is very relevant in our country today. I only wish there were Canadian scholars (in addition to Jordan Petersen) discussing this openly, as I think Canada has fallen into the "identity trap". Identity and grievance politics go hand in hand. Indigenous "nations" plus other self-defined groups, with past grievances, pursue recourse through courts. The country has broken up into little enclaves, the "universal" vision is gone. Perhaps this is also a reflection of Trudeau's "post nationalistic state" vision?. Although acknowledging past grievances is part of the solution, cancelling out the (white) "colonisers" which include the first PM of Canada in 1867 and early immigrant settlors, whom most Canadians value, is going backwards. I hope other countries take note.

Ms. Hicks! Seven minutes and fifty-four seconds I will never get back. Your only body of work relates to dignity and conflict resolution. Do you really think you can resolve major conflicts with this pathetic attempt at stating something remotely interesting or profound? The entire history of humanity revolves around human interaction and conflict; the constant struggle to find mutual understanding, respect, and compromise for one another. Why on earth do you think you can change human nature at its core? It is ridiculous to think that you are contributing anything to society with these atrocious talks. Please stop. However, I do agree with one of your points. You stated that “people want an apology when someone does them wrong.” This is absolutely correct. I do. I do want an apology for you putting out this garbage content. I do want an apology for your insufferable voice forcing me to throw my $1,200 laptop out of the window. Sounds good. I'd be happy if higher education was mostly something like job training, but for the 'truly' part I wish I and my fellow students had been offered Thucidides History Of The Peloponnesian War and tasked to discuss it in relation to current human behavior. Probably other books, The Prince, for instance, would serve, but the idea is to truly educate us, not brainwash or leave us ignorant regarding power. Maybe also a psychology class in the makeup of people who seek power and people who support it.

In fact, the hostility and otherism begin with the first campaign of HW and his henchmen Lee Atwater, on his deathbed regretted what he had done to the country in that campaign. We had Willie Horton. We had the prissy New Englander HW pretending that the word liberal is obscene and could only be hinted at with the letter L out of his pure lips. Yes, he was not a populist in the sense that he had any connection with working class people, which he did not, but he percolated in a party that was already making home for the likes of Pat Buchanan. Not sure what made this pop up in my list, but figured it was worth a quick watch. I always want to listen to someone who can articulate a position that I disagree with. It's VERY hard to do these days, because no one wants to have actual discussions. Then, I started watching and realized I don't disagree with you at all, at least in a theoretical sense. 2 years of econ grad school decades ago still rattles around in my brain, and I believe that any artificial constructs, including movement among borders, leads to inefficiencies. So, the world, as a whole, is better off with complete freedom of movement. An equilibrium will eventually take place. I get that. But, I think people (and maybe you?) will conflate that argument with what is happening today at the border, saying the huge influx done outside of the normal process is acceptable or that it is the same as the open border solution you propose. It absolutely is not. The problem is that the current system has a self-selection mechanism that filters what type of people come in. And, I think any border proposal, in the way you refer to it, must still have some order. Countries need to have some idea who is in their country. So, I'm not sure what my point is other than curious whether you are using your argument for open borders to argue that the current situation is acceptable?
