Sailing with the Historic Vessel Vega
As you know our prime objective at Vega 1892 is to deliver educational and medical supplies along with reading glasses for the elderly to remote, often isolated, island communities where they make a huge difference in peoples lives. Right now the supply side is flowing nicely and it looks like when the monsoon changes we will have roughly 17 tons to deliver. The problem is that after almost three years without any fundraising events we are seriously worried about the running cost to make those deliveries. I'm talking about fuel, food for the crew, and all those things that let us move. It doesn’t help anyone if we have a full load but can’t get there to deliver it. We could sure use some help right now. vega1892.com/

Deadeyes and lanyards are still entirely practical today. We use them on Historic Vessel Vega because they are resilient, easy on the spars and rigging, and their elasticity is quite noticeable. They give under sudden strains and bad weather, and in times of stress (God forbid !) are quickly cut away.

Splicing is a method for joining rope into a loop or joining two lengths of the line by weaving the strands together rather than tying a knot. It is a very useful thing to know how to do, and once you get the hang of it you can use it for all sorts of things at home and on the water. If you’re trying to splice something really heavy, you may need a fid for a little extra help. Masking tape will...

      Not too much though - very easy to overtighten in that situation leading to very unbalanced stresses. You probably know this but others may not.

    So I'm rigging dyneema, I'm also doing these traditional wooden deadeyes (purple heart wood), I'm having a problem where as I'm tensioning my deadeyes are rotating so the holes become vertical, or worse rotate all the way 180°. I've used beeswax, cooking oil to try and make it easier, but it rotates everytime...any suggestions?

    • @rmcnabb
      @rmcnabb Před 3 měsíci

      Your problem is a round deadeye. You're mixing technologies that don't actually work that well together. The seizing on the shroud holding the deadeye in place isn't tight enough. Often wire is used for this. Dyneema is insanely strong but it also has very low friction , and if you really clamp down on it to hold it in place around a deadeye, you're making a weak point in the yarns. Just because it's rope doesn't mean it's the right rope for all rope tasks. Look at Colligo Rigging for other ideas using deadeye technology but made with dyneema in mind.

    • @travisweaver1805
      @travisweaver1805 Před 3 měsíci

      @@rmcnabb hey thanks for the reply, actually I figured out that in order to create the friction you need to keep the deadeye blocks from turning, you need to parcel and serve the dyneema eye that the deadeye sits in with (if I recall correctly) #36 tarred seine twine. It costs 1/100th the pice of any colligo stuff, and it harkens back to the old tall ship days of parceling and serving. I got the purple heart blocks for about 300$ and I made about 30 or so deadeyes out of that, so vastly cheaper, DIY friendly, cost effective, and now my ketch is running full dyneema, parcelled and served, with beautiful purple heart deadeyes. And the parceling and serving not only helps with chafe resistance and UV damage, but the tension put on the dyneema from the serving mallet makes the dyneema stronger (in so far as it more closely meets the breaking loads even after splices) ...Old school methods meet new school line! It's awesome.
